To not get it done?

Tooth fairly near the front so visible when I smile. Went bad and had to have root canal. The back of the tooth came away so I'm left with the front of it and a filling at the back so cosmetically it looks fine. It's been like this a couple of years now. I avoid chewing hard foods on that side and have no pain or problems with it. I'm now booked in for a crown but the dentist has warned the crown prep could cause the tooth to break off as it's brittle but then it could break off eventually if I don't get it done. If successful the crown should keep it going for many years. I desperately don't want to lose the tooth so am terrified it will break off during the prep. Would you leave it alone and hope it lasts or go for the crown and keep your fingers crossed?

Id leave it, but I have an irrational fear of the dentist from childhood. If its stable now id leave it til its not.

That's how I'm thinking at the moment (the appointment is today!) but then I'm scared it will break and the option for a crown will be gone
