But he always could tell a good story. He’d told stories in builders’ snap cabins, in queues for the bus, to children on his garden tours, to the visitors in our barn, to anyone who sat still for too long. Captivating people with his tales of everything from history to botany. [...] He’s always had such a loud voice, never one to whisper.
I know someone who says similar about their dh. "He'll talk to anyone. People love talking to him; he's just so sociable, people stay for hours listening to him," said in an admiring tone.
When you first meet them, you take it on face value, and, yes, he is always striking up long conversations with randomers.
But then as you get to know them, you realise that he's not striking up conversation, he's monologing at them about one of his pet topics. People stay because they're polite, not because they're interested and can't find a way to break in and move on.
It's actually really sad watching because both of them think that people adore him, but it isn't the reality.
