To think the BMA have misjudged with another doctor's strike? Thread 2

Rolling this over as people still seem to have something to say but no new poll.

Original post

AIBU to think the BMA have misjudged with another doctor's strike?

Last year they got more than anyone else in the NHS along with an improved deal. Nurses and other AHPs received lower rises.

BMA have just announced another 'resident' doctor strike continuing to chase pay restoration to 2008 levels.

Having just had the major win with changes to IMG prioritisation and the clamp-down on PAs it feels a bit tone-deaf and I can't see Streeting going for it.

I don't really care what you believe 😂. Pop over to any Medicine thread on here and ask around. Or take me up on my offer to see the WP work going on. Your beloved Oxford don't think it's about all about money. Poverty is one aspect that's all.

@PurpleFairyLights again, no evidence produced, just a sound box of 'seconded'. The only way they can argue is to be rude and call others liars. Apparently I am not who many people know me to be.

I prefer the style of those who can argue without denigrating others like stuffing. Why do the others they feel the need to put people down so much ?

Decent SPaG help communication. Not difficult.

PurpleFairyLights · 16/08/2025 17:09

Discribe was another autocorrect fail. I have dyslexia so a bit of a low hanging fruit target but crack on.

Sevillian · 16/08/2025 17:11

Forgive me, but I don't think producing a very basic spreadsheet of medical school entrance requirements counts as being at the helm of widening participation, especially when distributed through the medium of MN higher Ed threads.

Poverty is at the core of the movement to widen participation, of course it is. It's puerile to quibble about that.

I don't think dyslexia is producing the errors I'm referring to PurpleFairyLights. It's much broader than that.

I have dyslexia which makes it difficult.but I have got 3 degrees from top institutions in robust subjects so not done too bad.

Talking of the man on the Clapham Omnibus I think you need to study a bit more law.

Sevillian · 16/08/2025 17:30

Um I'm ok on law I think. I used the term the man on the Clapham omnibus quite correctly.

It is a term used in law lectures but you come across as needing further study.

mumsneedwine · 16/08/2025 18:24

Oh dear Seville. Again you fail to understand. Yes, I have a spreadsheet summarising every Uni which I share with anyone who wants it (you always seem to dislike me doing this which is weird - why wouldn't you offer help if you can ?).

I also hold a post in WP that means I do a lot more - come visit and I'll show you some of our projects. It's a genuine offer as lots of people involved and it's helping loads of kids (not just future medics). Why wouldn't you be interested if so involved in WP ? Everyone else I've ever said it to has visited, and I've gone to see what they are doing. It's how you learn.
And I say again for the hard of understanding, yes poverty plays a part, but there are many other factors involved. I've had several students from v nice private schools get WP places.

Holy cow purple- it was a single example of a limitation. The effect of going pink to a department is immense, going red causes a great deal of work and when it is one comment by one trainee - it is frustrating.

Last year we went pink for induction - comments, staff left the induction meeting - yes they did there was a continuous fire alarm and the fire brigade asked us to evacuate!! We changed nothing and this year are green - just did not plan a firebell in the middle of the session!

The stats I was quoting previously was the BMA own survey of residents where 50% ahd not bothered to apply - those in my own department did not apply because they had other plans. Those looking for standalone was because they do not know what they wanted to specialise in so went to try it for 6 months - think that demonstrates maturity and insight rather than an inability to get a job.

a) how do you know its basic if never seen it (it's not and also incudes dentists and vets)

b) when I have said I'm at 'the helm' of WP, please provide this evidence

Otherwise you again are spouting untruths, and we don't like those.

mumsneedwine · 16/08/2025 18:33

@stuffedpeppers but your figures showed that 11 out of 18 got into training (think that's right ?). So more than 50% got in so more than 50% must have applied this year ? I think 2025 is a v different experience than ever before for F2s.

mumsneedwine · 16/08/2025 18:34

@stuffedpeppers and you'll like the story about the dept that got reported for having uncomfortable chairs at induction. They should have just given them the sharps bin !

You seem to concentrate on the work a negative GMC survey can cause.

What about the good it does? You must be aware that the need is there. I think there should be a GMC survey several times a year to capture more data.

At the helm is my phrase but you certainly wish people to believe that you’re a big player in widening participation. I just don’t think there’s a shred of evidence that you understand it at any level beyond the most shallow.

I find the spreadsheet faintly ridiculous. It’s a purely mechanical exercise and students should be researching these things themselves. It runs the risk of not being updated as universities change their criteria and it doesn’t scratch the surface of individual university policy. I’ve glanced at your spreadsheet, which is why I can see what it contains (and doesn’t contain).

mumsneedwine · 16/08/2025 18:59

@Sevillian how have you 'glanced' at it ? I've never sent it to you (unless you have asked).

mumsneedwine · 16/08/2025 19:01

@Sevillian and I've offered you the chance to come see the evidence but you don't seem to want to. I even do some of it in Oxford so I'm sure you'd enjoy the day out. They provide a v nice lunch for us all.

The only way they can argue is to be rude and call others liars. Apparently I am not who many people know me to be.

Coming from mums and purple who have called people liars more times than I can count, that is funny.

I actually think the GMC survey is too crude and more detail would help a lot of departments but that was not what I was trying to illustrate. When you are just white -you get no idea what is good, bad or indifferent.
And yes the work involved when one bad comment turns you pink is often disproportionate to the perceived offence still required a meeting of many people, an action plan, a further meeting and then a final meeting. Lot of Tax payer time wasted pandering to one disgruntled resident who got refused their annual leave when it was booked outside the parameters and colleagues had got in first and then called in sick anyway!

I don't think anyone has been rude. Who called you a "liar" time and date of post please.

mumsneedwine · 16/08/2025 19:39

I did say I thought the fact that they knew the destination on every F2 was a bit ballsy, but they seem an anomaly and actually follow up with every F2 who comes through their depts. Held my hands up to that one. Have never met a consultant who does this, even ES.
Not sure who else I have ever called a liar ? Would love this evidence.

mumsneedwine · 16/08/2025 19:44

I often don't agree with some posters. That's not calling anyone a liar, it's debate. I always try and provide facts to back up my viewpoint, often these are just ignored. And abuse then follows. Especially from one poster who can't seem to post without denigrating someone.

Because I was shown it mumsneedwine. And I'm not alone in thinking it a really bad idea.

I really am not in need of an invitation to Oxford! Nor in need of a free lunch. I like coffee from Brew and lunch from North Parade or the deli counter at Branca and I try to have the coffee and lunch in the Parks, whenever possible.

Hahaha it's actually an old term which used to be used in the courts. It's only used in law lectures on account of its use a century or so ago in the courts. It's a very useful term, but on the quaint side now. Jeez. Please don't tell me that you're a lawyer!
