Did you have a plan already as to what you were going to do with the old one? Eg, put it in the kitchen or the bedroom or something?

If your plan was to try and sell it then I think YANBU to ask your cousin something for it. Probably no more than £100 or something.

Just out of interest, why is your new TV so much better? I only ask because we have had our current TV for ages and it still seems fine so just wondering if we are missing out.

What will you do with it if your cousin doesn’t take it? If it’s going to the tip or is going to sit in a shed for a decade, I’d probably give it to the cousin for free.

If you’re going to sell it, I’d explain that and say you’ll let them have it for a bit less than you would ask if you sold it.

This all assumes your cousin is a deserving type. If not, then it’d be sell at full re-sale value.

Nothing wrong with selling the old one to offset the cost of the new one. It's very financially savvy.

Gowlett · 20/07/2025 23:28

No, I would just give it away.

Branleuse · 20/07/2025 23:36

tell her you were planning on keeping it for a different room, but if she wants to make you an offer on it, sure.

stayathomer · 20/07/2025 23:39

How well off she is shouldn’t mean anything, I’d think it’s unfair that you’d sell because someone can pay if you’d have given it to a well off family member for free. Personally I’d give it away but I have family members who’d take money for it

KrisAkabusi · 20/07/2025 23:45

Take whatever they offer, but you're not going to get much for a four year old telly.

Peacepleaselouise · 20/07/2025 23:47

Be upfront. Ah actually [cousin] I am going to sell it. You’re welcome to buy it if you like. The price is £xxx

healthybychristmas · 21/07/2025 00:03

I agree, tell her that you are going to sell it and if she wants to buy it she's welcome to.

No - they’re family.
