DH ate all the school snacks and I am ranting *&!@!

Not really an AIBU but I just needed to vent.

Went to make the school lunch and discovered (yet again) that DH has eaten all the snacks that I use for DS’s lunch. These were purchased on Thursday and have all gone by Sunday (not sure when but probably by Saturday lunchtime). He has form for this, usually every few months but it seriously annoys me when I don’t find out about it until Sunday evening after the shops have closed. Occasionally DH will admit he’s done it but I have enough time to replace the eaten items…. But not tonight.

It’ll be things like my son’s favourite biscuits, or those small snack size packets of crisps (like a box of 25) etc.

For reference my snack items I have to hide but my son’s things are usually safe. Feeling annoyed and want to buy a padlock and a f off sign.

She said it was Sunday evening, MN time stamped it as mid morning, that wasn't enough of a clue for you?

Clue or no clue as you put it, it's the silly fuss that's laughable.

OP posts on a UK website, doesn't mention she isn't in the UK and when some people assumed she was, apparently that's their fault for not noticing the time stamp 🤣

SaintGermain · 20/07/2025 13:35

He’s an adult. If he has an eating disorder that overrides his responsibility towards his child and respect for his wife, then he should seek help to address the problem.

Personally, I think he’s just a greedy, thoughtless git.

It’s mumsnet.com not .uk some of us pointed out the post references it being Sunday night packing a kids school lunch and too late to shop. It’s the same as ppl pointing out to me that I’d said schools are over for hols (here in Scotland) they’re not everywhere else in Uk, ppl were right to correct me. I’m not offended they did

OMG I just splurged tea out my nose 😂

I would stop having things like this in the house. Let's be honest, children shouldn't be taking biscuits and crisps to school. They are far better having healthier options. If DH wants to stuff his face with crap, let him buy the crap.

Thank God someone said it. I can’t understand the panic - the child will not be deprived. Crisps and biscuits are entirely unnecessary. Stick an apple and some cheese in instead.

whynotwhatknot · 20/07/2025 14:16

you have to hide your food-get him to start replacing it until he learns

I thought schools were closed for the holidays?

We're in the Midlands and still have another week to go!

My DC are still at school until mid next week.... they are different all over the country let alone another. Why is some people presuming everyone is finished at the same time???? Odd

Hardly the crime of the century though is it?

Trust mumsnet to make a big thing out of something so inconsequential.

It's amusing though, watching it build up 🤣

Sidebeforeself · 20/07/2025 17:58

It’s very dispiriting when the OP has explained her partner has an eating disorder to see posters calling him greedy pig etc. Whilst this doesn’t excuse him not replacing the items , trading to ensure his son isn’t impacted etc. it’s obviously more than greed.

Sidebeforeself · 20/07/2025 17:59

I mean no wonder men struggle to get help with eating disorders

Morningsleepin · 20/07/2025 18:01

In my country we're not allowed to send our children to school with junk food. And the children are noticeably healthier and slimmer since that rule came in

Because she says it is Sunday evening and the shops are shut. She lives in Brisbane.

In which case she can give her kids money for tuck shop to buy snacks from there at school 🤷‍♀️ which is what they do in schools all over Queensland

There are IGA’s open late at night and 24 hour supermarkets. Alternatively, a petrol station would still be open somewhere.

PeapodMcgee · 20/07/2025 18:43

The question I was asked was why presume OP is not in the UK, not

"where can someone down under get snacks 24/7"

Shetlands · 20/07/2025 18:49

I'm the type of person who would put on a sad face and tell the child that I bought all the things for next week's lunches but his lunch box would be missing his favourite things because Daddy has eaten them all. It definitely wouldn't be my problem on a Sunday night.

Ihopeyouhavent · 20/07/2025 18:52

Hide them. Job done. No need for the drama and food/greed shaming.

I'm sure the kid can go a day with snackies for fucks sake.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 20/07/2025 13:01

God, the moaning on here because people assumed someone using a UK chat forum was actually in the UK 🤣

Mountain/Molehill.

Much easier for an OP to pop that tiny bit of info into an opening post.

And if they choose not to, that's not the big deal some people are making it into here either 🤷‍♂️

But she DID put it in the OP. She said the supermarket was closed.

It takes a special level of idiocy obliviousness to go straight to assuming that the OP was lying rather than the far more obvious interpretation that she didn't make up a completely random detail to for absolutely no reason but just happens to live elsewhere - and didn't bother specifying that because it's completely irrelevant to the actual question she's asking.

StrawberrySundaes · 20/07/2025 21:44

They’re just snacks. I was just having a vent as I don’t like finding out late on Sunday when I don’t have the opportunity to replace them.

My son will still get lunch, minus the snacks.

Snacks aren’t evil by the way. I don’t see him having a mini pack of grain waves in his lunch as a crime. Or a couple of biscuits with morning tea. He still gets a portion of fruit and veg in both. He’s is only 10 but he has a very healthy relationship with food and is very mindful of healthy eating, exercise and looking after yourself, drinking plenty of water etc (even the school takes an active role in this).

It was reassuring seeing that I’m not the only one who has to hide food. To me I don’t think this is normal though. I think DH is in denial about the impact of his eating habits.

Nice way to help the dad with his eating disorder.

Has he been medically diagnosed and having treatment? OP only said he was a binge eater going through a bad patch, not that he's been diagnosed as bulimic.

I honestly couldn't live with someone whose self control was so bad they scoffed all the children's snacks, meaning I'd have to hide food!

Not diagnosed with any eating disorder but he would never admit it either.

He is very overweight. At his last health checkup the doctor wanted to put him on weight loss injections but he insisted he wanted to lose the weight “naturally”. In the past his weight has yoyo’d - he would go cold turkey, calorie count and lose weight very quickly, then months later revert back to his old eating habits and gain all the weight back (and more). He is at his heaviest now.

Part of his denial is he is a very active person. He works out every day and trains for kickboxing several times a week too. He has a lot of muscle on him.

After his latest “bad weekend of eating” he has decided he’s going on yet another diet (we are going on holiday in September). Not looking forward to the restrictive eating and subsequent comments about my eating habits /exercise etc I just wish it wasn’t so extreme. Like you can reduce your portions and snacks and lose weight slower. Still enjoy a treat once a week.
