AIBU- guest bed

willthiscoldeverbuggeroff · 20/07/2025 08:13

AIBU to want to provide a comfortable bed for guests?

So, sofa bed v futon- Which should I go for?
What have you slept in and would recommend?

I’ve slept in some really uncomfortable guest beds, so I’m super mindful that I want to provide a sleeping solution for visitors that allows a restful sleep and ultimately they’ll want to return.

And of course, I’d like to avoid spending a huge amount if I can.

TIA x

I have a great ancient one from Futon, at the time it was their most expensive mattress. The only problem is that it's incredibly thick and heavy. We left that sofabed on the ground floor even when it would have been useful upstairs because it's just too heavy. So I suggest you strike a balance; get one that's pretty good but don't get carried away like I did, make sure the overall sofa itself meets your needs.

Definitely sofa bed over futon.

Squirrelblanket · 20/07/2025 08:27

We bought a deluxe airbed for guests. It's one of those which is the height of a real bed and it's really comfortable. (We tried it ourselves over Christmas and my mum stayed in our bed.) Inflates in minutes as it has an in built pump and stores away when not in use.

Definitely sofa bed.
We had a futon for a while and our —ill-mannered— guests complained about it. As one was a 30 year old of normal weight with no back issues, I figured it must genuinely be uncomfortable.

Another option is pump up mattress, they are apparently very good these days.

whynotmereally · 20/07/2025 08:36

We got a futon it folds away easily and is very comfy

ButtSurgery · 20/07/2025 08:38

We have an IKEA futon and even my elderly dad with bad hips finds it comfy. I do put a memory foam topper on it though.

More info please Squirrel - this sounds like exactly what I’m looking for, and I didn’t even know the airbed market had a quality end!

Not a futon.

Are your guests single or come as a couple? My mum has a sofa bed and paid for a better, spring type mattress on it, but it rolls in the centre. Fine for for 1 person but so uncomfortable for 2. Another bug bear is a mattress being thin and feeling the metalwork through it.

Are you thinking of a futon on the ground or raised up? We have this sofa https://www.futoncompany.co.uk/shop-by-product/sofa-beds/size/three-seater/vienna-3-seater-birch-sofa-bed.html from the futon company. Its used as a sofa 99% of the time, but was reasonably comfortable to sleep on and very easy to lift the back and flatten into a bed.

Another idea is a bed that comes down from the wall, but I think they are pricy.

Vienna 3 Seater Sofa Bed Birch wood | Futon Company

A true 3 seater futon with an easy open action for instant conversion into a comfortable bed ready for a good night's sleep on a traditional filled mattress.

I have a sofa bed and put a topper on top. Very comfy. I've used it in this hot weather because its in the coolest room.

TimeForABreak4 · 20/07/2025 08:44

If you get a sofa bed can you put a comfy mattress topper down when making it up for guests. My son slept on a sofa bed in a hotel we were at on Friday and the mattress was solid and so uncomfy.

We have a good quality single bed with another one that lives underneath it, slides out and the legs pop up so they have a 6ft bed but separate duvets. We only have guests a couple of times a year now so this works well for us. When GC were younger they would sleep on the under-bed without putting the legs up so they were near the floor.

JMSA · 20/07/2025 16:39

@CastleofMey

We had one a few years back. It was called an Aerobed and it was bloody brilliant! Full king size, both in terms of its proportions and height. Plus, it had a flocked surface so was never slippy or cold. It came with an electric pump too.
We had to give it away when we moved and I was gutted!
Hope this helps.

Yes, this. Unless of course you need it to double up as an actual sofa.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/07/2025 17:06

I’ve got a brilliant sofa bed from Made.com

It’s box spring, I think that’s the key thing. Says it’s designed to sleep on every night (which isn’t what we use it for but it could be!)

Wowzel · 20/07/2025 17:07

We have the ikea hemnes day bed and all our guests say how comfy it is

82Songs · 20/07/2025 17:24

Sofa bed with a good topper.

Futons are so fiddly to set up.

TimeForTeaAndToast · 20/07/2025 17:27

Futons are uncomfortable.

Ooh I slept on one of these recently and it was supremely comfortable.

IhadaStripeyDeckchair · 20/07/2025 20:14

Futon are the most uncomfortable way in existence of keeping someone awake all night.

Do your visitors a favour & buy a decent sofa bed.
