AIBU to feel annoyed when I see people say Slither instead of sliver? It was even in a book I read recently. A slither of cake. No! That makes no sense, unless the cake’s been trodden into the carpet!

Also see: step foot in instead of set foot in

There’s plenty of others but those will do for now.

Rogue apostrophes. They leap out at me.

Offcom · 19/07/2025 14:36

Don’t think it’s a mistake like slither/sliver but feel strongly it should be blood spatter, not blood splatter

LordGribeau · 19/07/2025 14:36

There, their, they're OP. Don't get too worked up 🤣

BreadandButterscotch · 19/07/2025 14:37

On route rather than en route. Unless you’re on, for example, Route 66, in which case, the former would be acceptable!

saveforthat · 19/07/2025 14:38

There is a pedants corner thread you may enjoy.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 19/07/2025 14:38

People who leave out the apostrophe s altogether when referring to something belonging to someone, for example, “Can’t believe it’s John last day of year 4.” I think it comes from tagging people on social media, but it doesn’t even sound right when you read it back so surely they know it’s not right?

PhelanSegur · 19/07/2025 14:39

There’s an entire board devoted to this, OP.

saveforthat · 19/07/2025 14:39

I hate anyways instead of anyway.

Biomic · 19/07/2025 14:40

In regards to, when it is in regard to.

I was going to post the same although you might find it rather repetitive as every thread seems to have to include the same old errors that I'm sure will be posted here

Although I can't remember ever hearing anyone say slither instead of sliver, I can't imagine it ever coming up in conversation, it is really something you come across on multiple occasions?

firef1y · 19/07/2025 14:41

I hate when people try to quantify the word unique.
Something is either unique (as in one of a kind) or not. It can't be quite unique or very unique, it can only be unique or not, there is no spectrum ti the word.
And it's something I hear quite often, including in news reports.

SerendipityJane · 19/07/2025 14:41

I can get mildly irritated when people chose to ignore autocorrect and badly configured software that enforces US English and try and make themselves appear somehow superior pointing it out. Showing zero self awareness and knowledge of Muphrys law

But not enough to post about it😀

Would of instead of would have.
Lickle instead of little.
Why instead of while ie can you wait why I lace my shoes.
i could go on…….

People who correct other's grammar whilst using incorrect grammar themselves.

PoliteBee · 19/07/2025 14:43

People not using past tense to describe things from the past.

Apostrophe should be to the right of the letter s to make it plural!

I'm not correcting anyone's grammar though 😉

Unless it's "grammar belonging to others" ?

Londonmummy66 · 19/07/2025 14:47

Americanisms - cookie instead of biscuit, closet instead of wardrobe etc and don't get me going on "fanny pack" or pants instead of trousers......

DownsideUpside · 19/07/2025 14:48

They didn’t batter an eyelid

good! It sounds painful!

Swiftie1878 · 19/07/2025 14:48

There can’t be any REAL grammar pedants on here, because they would be driven mad by MN! 😂

SisterMargaretta · 19/07/2025 14:48

Phase and faze. I am irrationally irritated when people are "not phased" by something.

SilverHammer · 19/07/2025 14:48

His instead of he is.
‘Bored of’ instead of ‘bored with’.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/07/2025 14:48

The common apparent inability to make plurals out of words ending in Y. Baby’s, family’s, party’s, etc., not to mention university’s recently on MN!

And then making a possessive from what should be a plural - ‘My babies first birthday,’ etc. (not meaning twins)

SerendipityJane · 19/07/2025 14:49

But cookies aren't biscuits anyway.

A biscuit is baked twice, a cookie isn't.
