Friend should have told me her toilet seat was broken?

A bit of an unusual one - I visited my friends house yesterday for a coffee and a catch up which we arranged a week or so ago. After an half an hour or so I said I would pop to use the loo and she casually told me ‘oh - the toilet seat broke the other day so there isn’t one on there’.

As a slightly larger lady, ‘hovering’ as she suggested isn’t exactly straight forward.

Do you think she should have told me about this ahead of time?

I’m clearly in the minority but I wouldn’t expect a friend to sit on the ‘bowl’ of my broken toilet and if I only had one bathroom then I’d absolutely mention it if they had planned to come round.

I'm ashamed to admit that I had no idea this area of etiquette even existed. I will be updating my Facebook status to 'Lucy's lavatory seat is currently a bit wonky' and changing my username to Lucythelooseslooisloose.

Cattery · 19/07/2025 11:18

Ffs. It’s not like the loo was blocked or there was no loo. Ridiculous. Wouldn’t bother me

Biscoffscoffer · 19/07/2025 11:18

Well, I would have mentioned the toilet seat issue beforehand if i was inviting a friend over. I think it's the polite thing to do, and I wouldn't want my friend to be caught off guard if she needed the loo. I wouldn't sit on the toilet bowl myself unless I really really had to and I wouldn't expect someone else to tbh. That said, most starbucks and costa toilets are awful so I hover anyway if i have to use their toilets. I'm sure there'll be times you've had to hover when using public toilets OP, so I wouldn't be so offended about having to hover that I'd start a thread about it on mnet.

What in the Mumsnet Saturday Morning Purgatory is going on here? You've got a three card trick of age, obesity and toilets already,

🤣 gets MN bingo card out! Reckon we can get a full house by noon?

Wow

Do you have disabilities? I was a size 30 (23 stone) at one point and was still fully capable of hovering if necessary - sometimes the state of public toilets make it so that there is little choice. Tbh unless a friend struggled to walk or had similar obvious disabilities I’m afraid it just wouldn’t occur to me that they couldn’t do the same if they had to.

No I’m not disabled. I’ve got down from size 20 to 16 so am making progress but know I need to do more.

Yeah sitting on the bowl that men have probably dripped in. No, I could never.

HoneyHoneyHowYouThrillMe · 19/07/2025 11:23

I don't judge others by my own standards @Isittimeformynapyet so there wasn't any such implication intended! I consider lots of things from others' perspectives even when they don't matter to me because I'd rather not offend or put people in uncomfortable situations if I can possibly help it. I probably overthink too much tbh but what can I say, that's my lot in life. When it comes to others and how they do things I am very relaxed so it's a strange dichotomy that's for sure.

It is a little difficult to relate to, I must say. Seems the very definition of not being resilient. But I suppose some people have never seen anything else and also don't understand things such as how bacteria works and that the seat is not automatically cleaner/safer than the rim. And of course there are other things to consider such as disability.

Although it's just as likely this is a (very tedious) troll post. Never knew there could be so many issues with toilets/bodily functions.

Sizes mean nothing you could be tall and a size 16 wouldn't look that big on you or you could be short and big in size 16. I weigh 14 stone 10 lbs and I am 5ft4in. How much do you weigh?

I think you are being disingenuous here. Pretty sure the poster meant that she , like myself, would mention this to someone who she is inviting over to her home. Not that she would announce it to everyone on SM , but I'm sure you knew this already.

Because there’s no way men have ever dripped on a toilet seat, after all…

I don’t understand why people are so squeamish. If it bothers you, grab a handful of toilet roll, give it a quick spray with some bathroom cleaner and wipe it.

Yerroblemom1923 · 19/07/2025 11:28

I'm speechless. Why the need to hover? It wasn't a public toilet! Yes, the porcelain is cold, that's about the only issue, but if I needed the loo I feel I could cope. I'm a size 14, if that helps.

LBFseBrom · 19/07/2025 11:28

No. My toilet seat has broken too, I've bought a new one but it is yet to be fixed. I still manage to go to the loo, so does anyone who visits.

Yes I am making efforts thank you, no need to body shame me.

You literally were not body shamed in any way. You sound very precious.

SnowyPetals · 19/07/2025 11:31

This is the most batshit post of the day, and there's some pretty stiff competition. I honestly don't know how some people function in life.

Get a room you two!

This thread is about the hitherto non-existent expectation of toilet seat condition warnings.

You are making this someone else's problem, so refuting that is not body shaming. At the size you are, you should be able to hover, and if you can't, you are in for a hard time as you age. Size is very hard to control - muscle strength is much easier.

BettyCrockerClinic · 19/07/2025 11:34

AnimalLover24 · 19/07/2025 10:07

Gone at home clearly!

Wouldn’t you just do that anyway?

Wishimaywishimight · 19/07/2025 11:34

I'm going to visit a friend tomorrow. If she rang me today to tell me her toilet seat was broken I would; a) be waiting on the punchline (obv a joke) or b) wonder if she had gone mad to think it worth mentioning.

This is such a ridiculous situation that I find it hard to believe OP is not taking the piss (sorry 😆).

Spaghettihair · 19/07/2025 11:37

Non event just use the bath like any normal person would

Richiewoo · 19/07/2025 11:37

You're absolutely ridiculous. It wouldn't cross my mind. Is your arse that precious you can only sit on a throne!

GentleSheep · 19/07/2025 11:39

I would let my friend know, yes. I'd have trouble with it myself, can't hover and if I sat I doubt I could get up again easily unless there was a nearby thing I could pull myself up with. If you're young and fit it wouldn't be an issue but not all of us are.
