to think that just because you say something about Israel and Gaza does not mean that you should be threatened with arrest under the terrorism act?

She had a sign saying "Free Gaza" and "Israel is committing genocide"

She was threatened with arrest under the terrorism act because a certain group that has been deemed to be a terrorist group also share those same views - and therefore the lady was supporting a terrorist group.

In the encounter, which she filmed, one officer told her: “Mentioning freedom of Gaza, Israel, genocide, all of that all come under proscribed groups, which are terror groups that have been dictated by the government.”

He went on to say that the phrase “Free Gaza” was “supportive of Palestine Action”, adding it was an offence “to express an opinion or belief that is supportive of a proscribed organisation, namely Palestine Action is an offence under section 12(1A) of the Terrorism Act”. The officer told her she had committed that offence.

I can think of many groups who share those same beliefs. Having that belief does not mean you support that group.

A Kent police spokesperson said: “Under the Terrorism Act it is a criminal offence to carry or display items that may arouse reasonable suspicion that an individual is a member or supporter of a proscribed organisation such as Palestine Action.”

Armed police threatened to arrest Kent protester for holding Palestinian flag

Officers accused Laura Murton who also had a sign saying ‘Free Gaza’ of supporting a proscribed organisation

If she had been arrested and this had been referred to the CPS, your point, about activism, would have been valid. She wasn't arrested for holding a sign; that's just sensationalist click bait reporting.

She was clearly threatened with arrest. I see that you have now changed your tune and agree that this would have been wrong!

I haven't changed my tune about free Palestine signs, at all. Anybody holding one, I stick to my original opinion, early on in the thread.

That they are committing an act of terrorism and should be arrested?

How about “Free Melania” T-shirts?

I don't think that anyone on here supports Hamas. People are shocked and disgusted that Palestinian women and children are being killed and maimed while queueing for aid. Being appalled by the actions of the Israeli Government and the IDF doesn't make people anti-semitic.

You don't appear to understand what anti semitic means.

So anyone holding a Free Palestine sign should be threatened with arrest under Section 12 of the Terrorism Act because they are expressing support for a proscribed organisation?

If that's your opinion, then why do you think the police would have been bollocked for doing just that?

Because that's what this entire thread is about

Yes, actually I do. Fuck around and find out; that person found out. Ignorance is no excuse and there is plenty of ignorance in this conflict.

Wow!
Nothing totalitarian about that.

What slogans might validly be used to indicate to the government, that a citizen would like them to alter course somewhat, in relation to Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.

YourOnMute · 20/07/2025 11:03

Dangermoo · 20/07/2025 08:46

That doesn't evidence you previous claim. What do you want me to evidence, in particular?

It does in fact. It shows a global south led response to the atrocities in Gaza. It demonstrates that contrary to your statements that opposition is not solely the preserve of white middle class women.
A simple Google will provide you with evidence of protests in countries all over the world, and actions by ordinary citizens all over the world. In countries that are developing and have been subject to colonisation themselves. They don't agree with the killing of children.
That's more than enough evidence. But when you're in the wrong, bleat for your empirical evidence.
It may also surprise you that people on this thread are not the middle class women you like to typecast. Not that's there's anything wrong with middleclass women, or white women, or women in fact. They too are allowed to campaign or be involved in issues.

No, those threads are shut down because "certain posters" resort to personal attacks and hyperbolic language.

You yourself said in an another thread that you agreed with children being killed.
Children being killed.
When questioned, after your post was deleted, you said you stood by it.
Children being killed.

Says it all then. Why am I not surprised one bit? Some posters don't deserve the attention they are getting here.

I think this is an important point. Most of us on here can distinguish between Hamas and Palestinian people. We understand that collective punishment is illegal under international law. We can make the separation and protest Israel’s atrocities on innocent children in Gaza.

Except it would seem for the Israel lobby in here. Who don’t seem to be able to make that distinction at all. But maybe that’s how the genocide is happening- because people have dehumanised the Palestinians so much.

So many echoes of history.

ArtfulGoldWriter · 20/07/2025 13:48

Yes more people killed by the IDF today

I think what is happening in Syria is a lot more complex than what is happening in Gaza, and going “IDF” unfortunately shows up as ignorance.

This is a joke right? Have you actually read the article I link to?

Actual report about the IDF shooting civilians in Gaza -but yet people are still coming in here and trying to deny its happening.

Genuinely never seen such obfuscation

It isn’t a joke at all. I mean the ‘politics’ of why the IDF are in Gaza, is completely different to what is happening in Syria.

I don’t think they are comparable. They are both horrific, but they aren’t the same.

Its insidious. But you can see it on this board as well. The attempts to rile posters enough that their posts are deleted and possibly banned are so obvious. The insults towards anyone disagreeing with Israel...useful idiots, fuckwits, lots more we've all seen it. Desperately trying to rubbish and dismiss anyone with a shred of compassion as to what the Palestinians are enduring. It's non stop.

I don’t know Mumsnet that well but is it possible for one person to be behind more than one username ?

ssd · 20/07/2025 17:35

I'm not sure really. I've had the same username for 20 odd years 😀

I think MN are quite hot on sniffing those out. It's called 'sockpuppeting' and it's not allowed on the site, rightly.

It really does. I'm amazed that poster wasn't banned for such abhorrent views, on a parenting website. It defies everything mn stands for. Utterly horrific. But it does explain a lot of their posts on this board, utter contempt for Palestinians and anyone who dares to support them. I always give people the benefit of the doubt and think "you can't be all bad". I can see I was being niave.

I’ve also reported that poster several times for it - it’s literally amazing that on a parenting site someone can actively support the starvation of women and children! and shut down anyone else that is horrified by it.
