To think that there is a large number of Mners that want this place to be dull and without discussion?

I love Mn....we all do, thats why we are here. so don't jump on me and tell me off for slagging it off, because im not.

but i do wonder if some people just dont really know what they want.

If the word netmums, ((((hugs)))) or Hun is mentioned we all shudder and run for the nearest hiding spot. and yet recently i have noticed with increased regularity the slightest hint at a debate or a subject likely to cause debate and we get lots of "hard hats" and "im off to get popcorn" and even worse people actually advising that the subject matter be dropped.

the intellectual aspect of MN is what i love most. the fact that there are people with such varied views and such great ability to voice them articulately.

why is it that we now wish to stop people from posting anything that is even slightly controversial?

i agree-i like it best because i can come on and get lots of different opinions and views and can say my bit without getting shouted at.

that'll teach you to do rl. you missed a lovely thread where you could have had a lovely debate.

edam · 26/05/2008 22:49

Popcorn, anyone? I'm all in favour of vigorous debate. Without it, your beliefs and opinions would just calcify.

YANBU.

Anything from 'tell me what I want to hear' is now 'unsupportive' 'mean', etc.

Stay outta the kitchen if you can't take the heat.

Or go to netmums with your tail between your legs and they'll give you a cuddle.

Mamazon · 26/05/2008 22:53

Lapin i am so sorry

I was reading a post by Lulumama just before yours and i must have typed on auto pilot.

2shoes - i know. i was always firstto tut when peole said they had been "off in the real world" sure serves me right doesn't it

IMO, it has become much more fast-paced here, and generally people speak/write in 'sound bites' instead of thoughtful posts. Threads have often moved on in the time it takes to write an articulate post, so valid/interesting points are often missed completely. And finally - often it is the people who 'shout loudest' and most frequently who are heard here.

There are exceptions, of course....

I hate the "popcorn" posts.

I also hate the "oh my view is SOOO controversial that I must now run away very fast from the really scary other people on the thread" posts - when actually it's the same old ill-thought-out shit that's been hauled out on every other thread of that subject since time began (usually begins with "We are all mummies trying to do the best for our babies" and ends with "don't let anyone make you feel guilty, OK, hun?")

lol, i loathe that too, hunker, the milquetoast controversialists. fine, post something interesting but don't kid on it's Important.

S1ur · 26/05/2008 22:59

Hmmm. But I think there have been debates over the last few weeks. And controversial OPs. And there's always been the popcorn vendors.

If you want analysis though......

A while ago people started putting it out there that mn was going through a bitchfest phase. A culling/cleansing if you will.

Then more recently there have been many cliquey/anit-clique threads

Now you think that posters are reining in their views.

Sooooooo.

People felt insecure by volitile atmosphere, they snuggled up to their friends for reassurance/felt all isolated, and now are recovering and feel unsure.

or.

You are talking bollocks and everyone here is as much of a loud mouthted opinionated wanker as ever.
