I have a job , a career , that has progression. Absolutely love my job but I have a lot of debt. I only work term time so would love to find something, not too time consuming , that I could do on the side during holidays . But not an actual job.

I’ve done a few “ side hustles “ in the past , made a bit extra around Christmas making Christmas gifts. I’m quite handy with design, so I did used to have a small business making stationary but this was during uni when I had more time. I don’t have the space for that now either.

Every time I look online I see surveys or digital marketing and I’m not interested in that. Surveys I’ve made maybe £30 - that’s not enough.

Im not looking for MLM or any get rich quick scheme - does anyone have any advice ?

I've tried :

  • Amazon Flex - I’m on the waiting list
  • Pay per text message - it was just sex talk and it was misleading people so I’m not into it
  • Tutoring - too much time , most people want you in the evening and I can’t commit

Not willing -

  • actual jobs - bar work, care etc - I don’t have the time to commit to set shifts , I have children and I also want to enjoy my time off
  • Mystery shopping / market research - it’s not reliable and I am signed up to loads already anyway and get nothing
  • Cashback - I don’t need to spend anymore
  • switching banks - I have a massive overdraft that I live in
  • Dog walking - too many in my area
  • Ironing - not a thing where I live and also I’m awful at it
  • Matched betting
I’m looking for something I could do with my children around- a hobby I could turn into a venture , I would deliver leaflets etc but I can’t find anything like that .

Talk about patronising.

She's an adult woman, I'm sure quite able to risk assess for herself. She's not vulnerable simply because she's a single mum.

So you think essentially suggesting gambling is a good responsible idea? Because that’s what this is.

Home dog boarding.

I do this full time. I make about £160 a day / £3-4k a month. I always have 4 sleeping over and a couple of day care dogs. It's so easy. I only take small dogs that are house trained. I am sitting here now with 6 at my feet. They have all been fed and walked, and I don't have to do anything else with them now until they want their dinner at around 4pm, and another walk.

My daughter is a teacher, and she does it in the summer holidays to make extra cash.

I see you couldn't commit to dog walking, because people will want someone who can do that all year round. But with boarding, people just want somewhere to put their dog for a short time, when they go on holiday.

You most likely will need a licence from your council at approx £140 for the year, and insurance with Cliverton, at about £140 for the whole year. You would make that £280 back in just 2 days of boarding.

I don't advertise or take on any new dos any more because I am fully booked all the time, but for starting out I placed an Ad on gumtree and FB, and I posted some flyers. I was fully booked within weeks.

You’ve worked 35 extra hours and netted £300? That doesn’t sound very lucrative to me.

It's nice work. Its minimum wage. Its not lucrative. I got paid to see Oasis twice, Taylor Swift last year, its 300 on top of my day job, bear in mind I'm also a higher rate tax payer. I've 300 per month extra that I use for holidays and treats, stuff I couldn't buy normally due to the cost of living.
Far better than doing monotonous surveys. OF definitely more lucrative for some but that doesn't tend to be lucrative for old gimmers like me. Also, as public sector workers it would cost me and OP our day jobs.

Move your overdraft to a 0% credit card. Overdrafts are one of most expensive ways to borrow.

Move remaining debts to 0% credit card.
Look at a website like entitled to to see if you are getting all your benefit entitlements.
Overhaul your outgoings (also set a diary reminder for the month any deals you are tied into expire so you can review again).
Look at renting out a room or driveway.
Sell stuff yhe family no longer use.

It doesn't matter what I (or you) think about it. It's up to the poster who suggested it & the OP to risk assess, it's not up to you to
Police or patronise. She's an adult woman, who teaches, so is not likely to need to be protected from suggestions.

Take from someone who works in the craft industry full time - Side hustles in crafts are just hobbies - it's very very difficult to make a decent amount of money, but you'll cover your costs. The craft world is very seasonal with frantic periods and long spans of nothing much happening.

If you have sufficient skill and the space you can teach workshops which can be a bit more lucrative but it takes a lot of planning, setting up etc.

If you're looking for a reliable source of income you will need to review all those things you have dismissed.

ThreenagerCentral · 17/07/2025 12:50

Have you uploaded your teaching resources to TES? There’s some rules around copyright you need to be careful of, but I earn a passive income of about £500 a year from this. Not mega money but once it’s done, it’s done.

What do you… actually do, if you don’t mind me asking.

I do lingerie type teasing pics and vids. I don’t do fully nude or sex acts. The fact is being naked is pretty boring and there’s plenty of women doing that. The trick is to tease but never quite reveal the goods ( which would probably be quite disappointing!) and keep em coming back for more so to speak. I don’t interact with the fans (other than saying hello and thanking them for joining) - don’t have time or energy for that. Note also I’m mid forties, rather short and have wonky teeth.

Not sure if anyone else has suggested this but could you mark exam papers? Look at exam boards websites for examiner vacancies and if you have any professional qualifications you could mark those? Some training providers run exams every month that are marked online eg NEBOSH. And exam invigilator work too, for in person exams, but may not be many in school hols.

Dweetfidilove · 17/07/2025 13:15

I don't know what your experience is exactly, @SparklyOpalEagle , but have you considered joining a board?

Maybe have a look at Public Appointments or other board recruiters for something in Education.
