Raynor Winn/Sally Walker's statement Raynor Winn

New posters welcome. It would be helpful to read at least the four Observer items above before posting.

To all - Please be careful when it comes to naming or implicating people and addresses not in the public eye or with no connection to the story, and around the understandable health speculations, especially where details are unclear or still emerging. Have you got any further details about A Time of Gifts?

I can't find anything in an (albeit cursory) look on the internet that references anything at all about it.

No, me neither- I'd expect his Wikipedia entry to have a "Controversies" section, but it doesn't.

I thought it was "Songlines" by Bruce Chatwin that was partially fabricated, but maybe it was "In Patagonia" too?

I still love "Songlines" though. And I still like TSP, to be honest.

I’m not sure the charity did and cider guy definitely didn’t

(I meant when reading the book - cider guy was clearly taken in)

What did they tell the Cider guy when they did the filming? He says he was gaslit but presumably knew what would happen (?) Was it ‘Rick Stein is coming & we’ll just walk him around’? Moth was very gentleman farmer here. Wasn’t it supposed to be a ruin too (?) It looked great & old school equipment in great condition.

SALaw · 14/07/2025 19:49

What on earth is there still to say on this that has justified 7 threads?!?

I think it was In Patagonia too, as soon as I googled that it came up with info about locals saying what he wrote didn't match reality.

I've done a more indepth look at A Time for Gifts, but there's nothing at all, so maybe it was another book the poster was meaning.

Quite a few people involved in the publishing, printing, advance review process must already know what was intended be in On Winter Hill. I wonder if any of that will leak, especially those parts which might now seem likely to be problematic i.e. untrue?

AldoGordo · 14/07/2025 19:51

Hang on. Now, I know Tim's health diagnosis has been under fire, and understandably so. It seems there's consensus he does have an illness which is only fair to conclude with the available evidence. Nevertheless, the earlier posts about his degree just got me thinking.

Here we have a man, claimed to be diagnosed with a terminal neurological condition with debilitating symptoms in 2013. Yet in that time he's managed to have:

  • Been made homeless with no state support
  • Surfed (albeit once we know of)
  • Walked the SWCP
  • Completed an undergraduate degree
  • Showcased his project at Hampton Court flower show
  • Provided, at the very least, moral support for his wife to write a bestselling book and 3 others (but more likely he took a more active role) all the while she cares for him.
  • Walked across Iceland
  • Brought a cider orchard back into use.
  • Appeared on TV
  • Moved house at least 4 times
  • Walked and cycled from Cape Wrath to Plymouth
  • Gone on a lot of errands and shopping trips to avoid media interviews
  • Intensively liaised with Jason Isaacs for the latter's Hollywood role.

He must be exhausted.

From memory he completed the walk from the Hook of Holland to Istanbul in the mid 1930s but the first book in the trilogy wan't published until 1977. There was a certain amount of artistic licence in the lyrical narrative. Having said that I enjoyed it immensely. Comparison with TSP? Hmm. The less said the better.

Also, if it was coming out in October, won't there be proof copies floating around? They usually send those out to various people for last minute checks, and also to other authors to get reviews to put on the cover.

Another thing that interests me is Moths degree. It seems like he did it for vanity reasons as he doesn’t seem to have done anything with it after he finished (in 2018). If anything he just got sucked into doing more walks for Sally.

Or did he even graduate?!

This whole story is so bat crazy..

www.falmouthpacket.co.uk/news/14607378.eden-students-take-award-winning-garden-to-hampton-court-flower-show/

I would love to know if he graduated. Is there anyway of checking if someone has a degree other than their cert. I know the uni has a database but they are not going to let some random me into it, are they.

Aspanielstolemysanity · 14/07/2025 19:55

Is it terrible to admit that I still quite fancy seeing the Salt Path film?

I have a total girl crush on GA anyway, plus I absolutely love the south west, and am definitely not well enough to walk the Coast Path never mind camp on it (neurological condition, and sadly no miracle cure available).

Has anyone seen it? Will I feel like yelling at fake RayMoth or is it possible to sort of just treat at as a work of fiction and soak up the scenery (natural and human)?

I think it's fair to say wide ranging digressions have been made. I never saw myself learning so much about the drawbacks of Agas, puzzling egg theft patterns from Super U, or sparking so much interest in ant art.

Yet Ray was having to do his boots up? Until they walked…Maybe walking & lots of physical movement really is transformative for the condition he has.

I certainly loved it for the scenery, and so did my 15 year old.

Maybe that's why the books have proved so popular! He defies science and almost seems to 'walk on water'. I'm not particularly religious, but in a post modern world, I can see why TSP sold so well.....

FurryHappyKittens · 14/07/2025 19:57

I've seen the film, before all this came out, and found it very boring.

There's just no substance to it. Which, in hindsight, makes a lot of sense.

I kept looking at my watch throughout, and would have left had it not disturbed other people.

@Bruisername I don't think the cider guy smelt a rat initially but at some point after the two months were up, and when he got to know how lazy they were, he must have thought something fishy was going on. Plus it sounded like his wife had their number. And I would have thought someone at the health charity, who know about the condition must have suspected something

Sorry I did mean when reading the book specifically in the vein of it not being believable yet the publisher wa quite happy to take it at face value

cider guy was exceedingly patient with them!!!

bit agree at the charity there will be some saying ‘see? Told you so!’

Isn’t all of this going to generate (tens of?) millions for Raymoth. If Netflix too. They’re laughing all the way to the bank. Increasingly, I think they had an ‘anti trip up’ plan. You quote the book a lot & I’ll avoid media where I can so not put on the spot - maybe?

sualipa · 14/07/2025 20:02

Not the most finely crafted opinion piece , a bit amateurish, perhaps but driven by raw passion. But it landed at least with me with some weight.
There’s an existential unease thick in the air, a quiet dread that’s lingered for some time. The skies, both literal and emotional, are darkening. So when a bombshell detonates in our emotional backyard, it strikes with piercing intimacy.
It’s no longer just some distant scandal or the expected lies of a well-rehearsed politician. It feels personal like it belongs to us and the Walkers/Winns lies literally lie at the heart of that storm , this is the way that the world ends, not with a bang but a Win-per !

They are hollow (wo)men indeed.

The Crumbling Of The Salt Path, A Metaphor For Modern Life
Why the cracks in the story remind us all we live on shaky ground
Julie Dee

But falling for lies and exaggeration can happen to the best of us.
When narratives regularly crumble like chalk, it’s a reminder to back away from the distracting scenery.
To forget the roads to nowhere, roads to hell and roads to ruin.
To stay focused on one path only.
Our own.
