Can someone help me make sense of this policy? New job

Face/body piercings, visible tattoos, hair colour and styles, make-up and jewellery, should all be in keeping with a professional image.

so visible tattoos are allowed, as long as they’re not anything that would offend? Or am I reading that wrong? I have a small one.

Good luck with the new job OP!

I’d expect in 99.9% of cases this simply means they’re permitted but shouldn’t detract from an overall professional look. Presumably they saw you at interview?

That said there’s a very small chance that the employer can use ‘loss of professional image’ as a justification for dismissal (no matter how unfair that may be).

I think it’s a catch all- they’re going to allow for personal styles and unique looks as much as possible but gives them a back up to not hire someone with “Fuck You” tattooed across their forehead. Or maybe extreme hair and piercings that look scary as a combination would be a no but if someone has a visible tatts up their neck/wrists, it would be fine if the image was tame and the person otherwise dressed professionally, not if the image was provoking and the person combined it with a pink mohawk and facial piercings. Essentially I think it’s deliberately vague to allow for manager/company judgement or interpretation.

That's our policy too.

Generally it means things like a small tattoo on your wrist is fine. Tattoos to the face or any offensive words are not. Our HR doesn't allow those hollowed out earlobes, or blue/green hair, extreme styles like mohican etc.

Nothing aggressive or religious in terms of jewellery, which can be worn on a long chain tucked under clothing. We're customer facing so keeping it fairly neutral is a good idea.

No visible tattoos or piercings other than ears I’d imagine.
