To wear my hair long at 40

I'm sick of hearing what society deems as unacceptable after turning 40. I will cut my hair when I damn well please. Why do they get to decide? Does society tell men what they shouldn't do?

Recommendations for natural shampoos that reduce hair loss, aid hair growth, and aren't too expensive would be appreciated! I'm noticing my usual shampoos like L'Oréal Elvive etc are making my hair look flat, and not as much volume.

I cut my hair in my early 40s but only because I always wanted to try short hair and my time for getting that skinny body I always wanted was running out so I did it anyway. I liked it but I’m now back to long hair and I’m 49. I find it easier to manage and have no intention of cutting it again, I’m loving it atm.

i use L’Oréal Professional. It’s more expensive but you can get it on sale regularly. I also occasionally use Avon detoxing shampoo and conditioner, I bought it for my teens greasy hair and will occasionally give mine a wash with it, or use it on holidays so I’m not carrying too many different shampoos ( 5 people with different hair).

I never liked the elvive shampoos, found they always made my hair feel greesy and heavy regardless of type I used.

Ive never been one to splash money on toiletries but I now fully appreciate spending the extra on a decent shampoo. I feel I use less because my hair is in better condition and it’s fully worth it.

Maybe look at things like Olaplex for mature hair, OGX do a mature hair shampoo, I’ve used the greasy hair one, again bought for teen dd and used, it was her go to shampoo till I got her the Avon one to try. Kerastase and Christophe Robin is also a good shampoo brand. But I’m sure there are others out there.

My friend has sworn by collagen supplements for her hair and nails, I’ve just started Elevate but it’s too soon to say. Same friend uses Philip Kingsley, I tried his swim cap recently which I loved but not anything else.

Mature hair, 😂I'm definately feeling old now!
Thanks for the recommendations, will check these out.

Go for it! The quality of mine isn't as good now but I had it long until I was 44.

I know that, logically. Nevertheless, even with shampoos I really like, my hair starts to get a bit duller and sadder looking if I use one for a long time and perks up when I switch to another. I have no idea why.

I agree with this!

If I use a new one then it does feel better! I think it is probably psychological and you just think it has worked differently because it is different

Gettingbysomehow · 13/07/2025 16:21

Mine is waist length in my 60s and still looks good.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 13/07/2025 16:22

I might regret this... but here goes... Freshly washed, but uncombed. I'm 61 and well past caring what anyone thinks.

I’m 42 and have waist length hair. Wash it about once a week. Swapped from elvive to Pantene. But know hair dressers hate both of those 😂

I often put a hair mask and hair oil in and leave for a couple of hours before washing. I take collagen and a regular multi vitamin

I’m 41 and growing mine! I lost about 1/3 of it to food poisoning so I’ve been trying to grow/thicken it before my next cut
the only thing that’s really changed is my colour, I’m much less orange now

That may be the prettiest hair I’ve seen in my life.

I am about to hit 60 and the only reason I have short hair is because I look like Crystal Tipps when it's long. If it wasn't so wild and thick then my hair would most definitely be longer.

Crystal Tipps has got lovely hair😌💜

ErrolTheDragon · 13/07/2025 16:28

64, I’ve never had short hair and no plans to do so any time soon. My hair is straight, fine but plenty of it, fair with just a few whites which don’t really show up. I use the tresemme clarifying shampoo first and then usually a ‘volume’ shampoo and conditioner - Aussie, John Freida, Elseve recently

salsamad · 13/07/2025 16:29

I’m almost 60 with long hair and I love it. I’m lucky because it’s thick and there’s minimal grey but i do take care of it.
I have it trimmed every 6/7 weeks at hairdressers & 1/4 foil highlights 4 times throughout the year - though it lightens naturally in the summer.
I wash it 3 times a week, one wash with Aussie Mega shampoo followed by brisk towel dry then a good conditioning balm left in for 3 minutes then rinsed out.
I love my hair and won’t be cutting it anytime soon.

Thank you! It doesn’t look like that daily, and takes a lot of gel Grin

I’m 32 but short hair looks awful on me. I’ll be wearing it at least to my shoulders until I die or it all falls out, whichever comes first. I do think my days of waist-length hair are probably over though, as I’m currently 7 months pregnant.

FWIW, at 55 my mother has always had her hair at least to the shoulder (except one time as a child where my grandmother tried to cut it herself).

CoubousAndTourmalet · 13/07/2025 16:42

Wow! @salsamad Your hair is very beautiful 😍

TroysMammy · 13/07/2025 16:48

I'm 57 and up until 2 months ago my straight hair was long, past my bra strap. I only cut it to a bob because 1) I was fed up with it 2) I'm going grey and my hair is fine 3) I wanted my monies worth of the £38 wash, cut and blow dry. Previously I paid that for for a 1 - 2 inch trim.

Lilith666 · 13/07/2025 17:04

I hope not! I am 55 and still have long hair. I wear it up mostly unless I am going out and it is easy to take care of. I like Olaplex and Liz Earle haircare.

I know, it's extortionate isn't it, esp since covid. I pay similar just for a trim, and that's cheapest around as well!

I’m 68, my long blonde tresses look good on me, I won’t be going short anytime.

Allseeingallknowing · 13/07/2025 17:10

I’m jealous of all this lovely hair!

Katkins17 · 13/07/2025 17:13

56 yr old here….long hair with a fringe with highlights…. I ain’t cutting it !!!

notacooldad · 13/07/2025 17:15

Why do they get to decide? Does society tell men what they shouldn't do?

Who is this society and when dud they tell you this. I didn't get the memo!!
Neither did my friends. Most are in their 50s and 60s. Some have shoulder blade length hair but it looks thick and glossy.
One of them did have longer hair that was looking witchy and straggly. She had it cut to just below the shoulders and what we call a wolfcut, kind if a modern shaggy mullett, and it has been a massive transformation that is worthy of an episode of 10 years younger!

Apparently your hair loses quality/vitality as your age, and I'm trying to prevent this.
Well yes a lot of women expierence thinning due the menopause and often get it cut to make it look thicker or less straggly. However there is no law to cut your hair.

You do you.

I am late 40s and I have waist length hair. I coconut oil my hair 2 evenings a week and it is shiny and healthy

How do you coconut oil your hair please? Is this part of washing? I try to only wash my thick hair once a week but would like more shine

whatisforteamum · 13/07/2025 17:15

I'm 58 with past shoulder length hair.
Tbh I heard the thing about cutting it off at 40 from my parents.
I don't suit short hair and now have blue tips.Only today a young person said it suits my clothing.
I do what I want tbh.

fussychica · 13/07/2025 17:16

Late 60s and thick hair just below shoulders. I won't be cutting it anytime soon, I look awful with short hair.
