To wear my hair long at 40

I'm sick of hearing what society deems as unacceptable after turning 40. I will cut my hair when I damn well please. Why do they get to decide? Does society tell men what they shouldn't do?

Recommendations for natural shampoos that reduce hair loss, aid hair growth, and aren't too expensive would be appreciated! I'm noticing my usual shampoos like L'Oréal Elvive etc are making my hair look flat, and not as much volume.

Never heard this about not having long hair over 40. I'm heading for 60 and have long hair. It looks good.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 13/07/2025 15:22

I remember an article years ago entitled what women should wear over 40, and it was just a series of photos of famous women over 40 wearing all sorts of different thing and the caption for each photo was “whatever the fuck they want”. I can’t find it again, but it was beautiful. Do whatever the fuck you want with your hair.

Dontcallmescarface · 13/07/2025 15:24

I am about to hit 60 and the only reason I have short hair is because I look like Crystal Tipps when it's long. If it wasn't so wild and thick then my hair would most definitely be longer.

As long as it’s not long grey hair. You’ve got to be a model to get away with that.

Why?
61 with greying hair long enough to sit on.
And I only ever get positive comments about it.

Things change during & after menopause

Wear your hair exactly as you choose !

LovingLimePeer · 13/07/2025 15:38

I had a 'helpful' hairdresser tell me that as we age, we should cut a lot of the weight out of our hair and consider shorter styles. I'm 38.

I was obviously polite at the time but decided to be contrary and am now trying to maximise the amount of length/ waviness in my hair. Bollocks to her, I'll do what I like.

Allseeingallknowing · 13/07/2025 15:39

Perhaps the question is, how do you have long, thick hair when you’re past menopause? I don’t think the answer is HRT, I as I know people not on it who have good, thick hair.
I’d love to know so I can join the crowd! Does anyone have thin, long, fine hair and think it looks good?

CoubousAndTourmalet · 13/07/2025 15:43

I use Faith in Nature shampoos, alternating between Seaweed Citrus, Rosemary and the fragrance free one. I don't condition because my hair is poker straight and conditioning makes it form dreadlocks. I never use heat, just wash in the shower and allow to dry naturally which can take 5 or 6 hours in winter.

It's a bit thinner post menopause, I suppose, but not too bad. I used to colour it but stopped about 20 years ago because of worsening migraines. It's grey streaked at front and top, still reddish brown underneath.

DuskyPink1984 · 13/07/2025 15:44

I still have long hair at 53, no-one has ever questioned me on it, I only ever receive compliments on.

TweedleDumbAndTweedleDeeeeeeeee · 13/07/2025 15:45

Early 50s here with long hair. If anyone inferred or told me that I should cut my hair, I would tell them to fuck off!

Post menopause, never had HRT. My hair is fine, straight and silky but there's a lot of it, if that makes sense... It's too slippery to hold a style. It still grows very quickly.

To say I think it looks good sounds like vanity, but it gets a lot of compliments...

Never once have I heard everyone after 40 should cut their hair short. I have noticed that a lot of woman over 60 decide to go short for whatever reason they have.

Often because post menopause hair can become thin and dry and frizzy and sparse Other than this there is no reason to cut it short

Nannyfannybanny · 13/07/2025 15:52

How can shoulder length hair be short.. hair a few inches long is short, chin length is medium, shoulder length and beyond is long.. I've had just about every colour and style and length. I had it a couple of inches below my ear,a few years ago,it wasn't choice. I showed the hair dresser a picture, said don't take too much off the back, she showed me the back with a mirror asking if I wanted more taken off.the back was half an inch long. Friends said "what on earth have you done to your hair". My 2 DDS hated it!

OohhhhhBigStretch · 13/07/2025 15:56

I’m 50 and my hair is longer than it’s ever been, past my bra strap now. Fuck what anyone says, if you like it, have it long

yakkity · 13/07/2025 15:56

Silvertulips · 13/07/2025 14:48

you need to change your shampoo regularly as hair gets used to it, or they change the formula.

You need silicone free shampoo as the plastic is weighing your hair down. It may take a few months to wash out - so don’t give up.

53 - waist length curly hair.

How exactly does hair get used to shampoo? By what mechanism?

hair is constantly growing and getting cut. It doesn’t have a brain or a memory. Shampoo and conditioner are very basic products that cleanse the debris and grease and then Smoothen the cuticles. There is no getting used to going on

My great grandmother had looooong hair way past her bum. She was very old school and always covered it all under a scarf. I remember when I was little I saw her getting ready so before the scarf went on, and I was amazed by this glorious sea of white hair. She was in her 90s I think.

I'm in my 40s and my hair goes down to my lower back. I don't do anything with it really and it looks great. I only use cheap shampoo etc from Aldi but use a little hair oil in the summer if it starts looking really dry. I might reconsider if/when it starts thinning but it's OK for now. I've heard this thing about women and long hair in their 40s but I'm not cutting mine any time soon.

I never understood old women having long hair that was always tucked away in a bun and scarf. Wfat was the point?

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 13/07/2025 15:59

Surely ‘society’ has not deemed 40 to be too old for long hair since about the 1960s? Odd statement.

Fedupandstressed · 13/07/2025 15:59

I’m 60 with curly hair just past my shoulders. I had an undercut but am growing it back out. I go to Spring in Birmingham, which is a bit of a trek, but the only curly hairdresser near. My hair is very dark brown with ever increasing streaks of white.
I just grab whatever’s in the shower to wash it, then use either Davines or Charlotte Monday oil on it. It usually just gets popped up in a messy bun unless I’m going out out.

my mum used to have lovely long blonde hair but now has it short and just looks like a generic old lady (81). I’m never cutting mine apart from frizzy ends again.

I know that, logically. Nevertheless, even with shampoos I really like, my hair starts to get a bit duller and sadder looking if I use one for a long time and perks up when I switch to another. I have no idea why.

Mine put layers in, looked terrible so I grew them out!

I’m 41 and growing mine! I lost about 1/3 of it to food poisoning so I’ve been trying to grow/thicken it before my next cut
the only thing that’s really changed is my colour, I’m much less orange now

HungreeHipp0 · 13/07/2025 16:06

My mum once told me that when you become a mum you should have short hair 😂

Itiswhysofew · 13/07/2025 16:08

I've heard it said and it's something i would've once agreed with, but not anymore.

I do think, however, that some people suit short/er hair better than long, me being one of them. I've never suited long hair, so I definitely wouldn't have it that way at my age of 58.

Purpledaisybug · 13/07/2025 16:12

I’m 51 and my hair has never been longer than it is now. I’m lucky enough to be a natural blonde and it’s still very light.
I use the Pantene menopause shampoo, we live in a soft water area and my hair is in pretty decent condition at the moment.

Livpool · 13/07/2025 16:17

I am 45 and didn’t realise I was supposed to cut my hair?! I thought this was only a thing with my Nan’s generation
