To wear my hair long at 40

I'm sick of hearing what society deems as unacceptable after turning 40. I will cut my hair when I damn well please. Why do they get to decide? Does society tell men what they shouldn't do?

Recommendations for natural shampoos that reduce hair loss, aid hair growth, and aren't too expensive would be appreciated! I'm noticing my usual shampoos like L'Oréal Elvive etc are making my hair look flat, and not as much volume.

I’m 43 and have always had long hair. It does take a bit more effort to keep it looking good than it once did. I take collagen which really helps with condition and stopped some of the shedding.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 13/07/2025 14:11

I never hear that said. I have long hair at 58 and my younger colleagues can't understand why people get their hair cut as they get older.

BreatheitAllIn · 13/07/2025 14:14

Anybody used Faith in Nature shampoo? I need a natural none chemical shampoo that lifts roots, and stops my scalp feeling hot, itchy and greasy, while volumising the length without overly drying. Does such a concoction exist? 😂

Pretty much every woman of every age has long hair these days

WestwardHo1 · 13/07/2025 14:15

Make the most of it. It will dry out and get frizzy before long (unless you're Kate M obviously)

I have been sucked into buying a highly expensive seaweed shampoo that promises to defrizz and stop shedding. It's still a frizzy mess. For a brief shining moment (2 years or so) up until last November I had the best hair I'd had since I was a teen - shiny, well condition ringlets and LONG. Now it has gone to total shit.

Yes that's the conditioner I'm using. Still feels like straw.

Pianoaholic · 13/07/2025 14:17

I am 52, with long hair. It's below my shoulders, mainly grey now but used to be blonde. It's quite thick so dyeing it would be a pain.
I once had it short in junior school but never liked it.
My mum did used to make the odd comment about my age/appropriateness of long hair but I ignored her!
Once you get to perimenopause etc I promise you won't give a toss what anyone else thinks!

RaininSummer · 13/07/2025 14:18

60s with long hair here.

SmegFridge · 13/07/2025 14:19

My great grandmother had looooong hair way past her bum. She was very old school and always covered it all under a scarf. I remember when I was little I saw her getting ready so before the scarf went on, and I was amazed by this glorious sea of white hair. She was in her 90s I think.

I'm in my 40s and my hair goes down to my lower back. I don't do anything with it really and it looks great. I only use cheap shampoo etc from Aldi but use a little hair oil in the summer if it starts looking really dry. I might reconsider if/when it starts thinning but it's OK for now. I've heard this thing about women and long hair in their 40s but I'm not cutting mine any time soon.

SaintGermain · 13/07/2025 14:19

I will never have short hair and neither will my sisters or my sister in law.

We are all of a certain age and love our long hair.

netflixfan · 13/07/2025 13:15

As long as it’s not long grey hair. You’ve got to be a model to get away with that.

No no no this is just as misogynistic and ridiculous as "women over 40 can't have long hair".

Women of any age can wear their hair however they bloody well want FFS.

I'm in my 50s, long hair past my bra strap, I wear it a variety of ways and always get compliments, especially from younger women which always makes me so happy!

Allseeingallknowing · 13/07/2025 14:21

What’s wrong with short hair?

TorroFerney · 13/07/2025 14:25

BreatheitAllIn · 13/07/2025 13:24

Seen articles about trendy "short" hairstyles for women 40+, and comments about middle aged women in their 40s, and 50s. I wonder if I'm just honing in on it, with being 40 now. I don't feel middle aged!
Then the latter coupled with my hair not responding well to my usual shampoos, itchy scalp hasnt helped matters, I think.

Is this online? Read one and the algorithm will present you another one , it thinks it’s giving you what you want to read!

I have long hair varying between mid back and waist that I put in different braids, I like to switch it up and feature my Mallen streak. Today I'm going with Heidi braids wrapped around my head. The old skool thinking that women should cut their hair after 40 has mostly disappeared, I get quite a few compliments on my hair.

Volumizing product. I'm in the US so I don't know if these are available there. OGX volumizing shampoo with biotin, Mane and Tail herbal volumizing shampoo, Cocomagic Detangling Mist is the best detangler ever, and L'Oreal 8 Second Wonder Water Lamellar shine rinse. Conditioner is Marc Anthony Grow Long Hair conditioner. I do scalp massage when I shampoo.

Thanks, I'll check Amazon!

I'm 48 and have long hair. I think its fine. My hair is still thick, healthy and dark. I've had friends cut their hair much shorter in the past several years because their hair had thinned, changed texture or they feel the condition has been badly effected by repeated colouring. Others just wanted a change. I don't think anyone specifically went short because they felt they were too old for long hair.

I use Shea Moisture shampoo and conditioner and argan oil. They're less than a tenner for a big bottle on offer and seem to work well.

BreatheitAllIn · 13/07/2025 13:10

Yes, I have just turned 40, and I'm seeing it online, "Women over 40..." Apparently your hair loses quality/vitality as your age, and I'm trying to prevent this. I want to keep my long hair!

Seeing it or searching for it?

As far as I’ve seen and heard in real life no-one is saying people over 40 should cut their hair unless they specifically ask for personal hair advice.

Stressmode · 13/07/2025 14:27

Rice water shampoo and conditioner, solid bars from Kitsch alternated with Cornish Seaweed Bath Company shampoo and conditioner. (Get the 3 for 2 offer)

you need to give it a month to strip away the old chemicals from
your hair and the. It will start to lather up
well.

satin or silk pillow cases… or satin bonnet .

After a year of this the transition is massive. I dread to think how it would be now if I had done nothing.

3KidsPlusDdog · 13/07/2025 14:27

This sort of applies to me. I’m in my 40s and have a long bob. Mine was below my shoulders until my late 30s. I saw a photo lately and don’t think it suited me at all, I feel the haircut I have now is far more stylish.
I’m also far more likely to actually bother blow drying or styling it, because it only takes a couple of minutes.

I saw photos of Kate Middleton yesterday and just don’t get the love for her hair at all. I think it looks so old fashioned on her. It just weighs her down. I think it would look much better with a few inches chopped off.

That said, I have no intention of cutting my hair up short. I think a lot of my mother’s generation did that after marriage.

FlatErica · 13/07/2025 14:27

I have never heard that, and I have no idea what you’re talking about.

MostArdently · 13/07/2025 14:31

I turned 40 earlier this year and my hair is the longest it’s ever been. I think as long as you keep it in good condition and have regular trims it looks great!

ruethewhirl · 13/07/2025 14:31

57 and no intention whatsoever of cutting my long hair short. Or removing my nose piercing, come to that.

ruethewhirl · 13/07/2025 14:33

Allseeingallknowing · 13/07/2025 14:21

What’s wrong with short hair?

Nothing whatsoever, if you’re lucky enough to suit it, but not all women do. I certainly don’t.

Is this suitable for greasy itchy roots? My hair need volumised as it tends to get flat, it is straight.
