Bad experience in M&S fitting rooms

TwinTantrums · 12/07/2025 14:00

I’ve recently lost a lot of weight and so need a lot of new summer and holiday clothes.

I came over to M&S this morning and had a trolley full of clothes and other such items, walking up to the fitting rooms and the woman looks me up and down and then asks how much I have, as “8 items is the maximum, to stop some types” from stealing. I offer to split it up and she rolls her eyes and says “I suppose you can”

I go in, try on my eight items, split them into what I do and don’t want and come back out, she then huffs and asks if I really need to go again? I said yes, as I’ve lost a lot of weight and don’t know what size I am. She looked me up and down and then asked how big I had been before if this is the after!! I just took the number from her and went back in.

AIBU or was she totally out of line?

OP, I can’t believe the number of people saying you should know what size you are, it was silly taking that number of items to try on, etc etc. I’ve NOT recently lost lots of weight (sadly!) and am not 100% sure of my size as it varies not only from shop to shop but from style to style within a single shop too. And of course you want to try things on to see how you look and feel in them. There’s absolutely nothing wrong or unusual about that.
As for her second comment, she was incredibly rude but please don’t let that dishearten you or detract from your achievement.

On a separate note, M&S have an online personal shopping service that’s free to sparks card holders. Might be worth considering? Other department stores also offer in person personal shopper services.

Congratulations on your weight loss.

She was a bit rude but it’s a pretty thankless job, and must be utterly miserable in this heat - and with all the recent issues M&S have had.

You were a bit silly taking so many items in with you. In what world did you think you were living that any changing room would let you in with so much stuff? Apart from the waiting time for any poor person coming after you who also wants to use the changing rooms. You were a bit silly / thoughtless, she was a bit rude. I think it probably evens out. Congratulations on your weight loss and enjoy your new wardrobe.

She's not silly! She is a paying customer and the are several changing rooms not just one! Besides those clothes are what keep that woman in a job.

Are you for real? 😂😂😂 You are the silly one!! Very silly indeed

101Nutella · 12/07/2025 15:01

This is awful - sorry you went through this @TwinTantrums . If she puts all customers off, she’ll have no job so should remember that.

i often do loads and I just take one batch and swap it. Saves me duplicating my efforts later. You were totally reasonable and she shouldn’t be rude to you at all whilst working. Please make a complaint- comments on your weight are unacceptable.

Megifer · 12/07/2025 15:02

How do people know she was at breaking point?? She's probably is just a dickhead who probably should lose her job so someone actually decent can have it 🙄

nice shop assistants at "breaking point" dont suddenly forget customers can try on as many clothes as they like as long as they dont take the max in and slag off the customer to their actual face.

Breaking point.....my fat arse.....

Tealpins · 12/07/2025 15:02

anyzee · 12/07/2025 14:16

The assistant will be sanctioned and may lose her job. Is that what you really want?

Just don't shop there anymore. There are plenty of other places, hit them in their pocket.

This is an absolutely bonkers take. Make M&S suffer and presumably lose many members of good staff by undertaking a silent boycott aimed at one bloody rude and hurtful person who works there. Yeah, sure.

wordler · 12/07/2025 15:02

I’m still not getting the issue with trying stuff on - even if you know your size and are confident the store is sizing correctly, you still don’t know if you’ll really like the item when it’s on you - apart from basic t-shirts etc.

I can imagine there are some people - particularly teens etc who might bring a handful of clothes with no intent to buy any which must be frustrating, but customers like the OP should be encouraged to try as much as they want to.

Because if she was like this all the time she would of lost her job a long time ago

She was exceptionally rude. But it’s very hot and it’s a thankless job in retail. Cut her some slack. Congratulations on your weight loss success.

It might be a thankless job but it is a paid one

Think about all the people who went for this job and this is the best they could come up with. Honestly I would have handed her the lot back and gone to get a manager or just left and gone home and then complained

Incredibly rude to the extent that she should lose her job if she cares about it that little she thinks insulting a customer is acceptable

BlueyNeedsToFuckOff · 12/07/2025 15:03

alexalisten · 12/07/2025 14:57

Absolutely not an excuse to be rude but I also wouldn't want someone to get fired for getting to their breaking point. Would you feel the same if an overworked dr or nurse was stressed out and rude would you want them to lose their job. Like I said previously I would of said something to her their and then

If someone working in a customer or patient facing role was that rude, then I would want them to be taken off that role until they learned how to talk to people politely.

This isn’t being a bit grumpy, or someone snapping at the end of their tether. Both of those, although wrong, would be excusable. This is someone being extremely rude for no reason.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 12/07/2025 15:03

Evenstar · 12/07/2025 14:02

I think you should make a complaint to the store manager, that was extremely rude and such an unhelpful attitude when you were about to spend a great deal of money.

I would. I'd do it by email. Say nothing if you can't be polite.

You've not had much dealings with the nhs have you 🤣🤣

She was rude. The weather doesn't justify her attitude. She knows what she was getting into when she took on the job. OP did nothing to deserve that. She doesn't deserve any slack.

A doctor and a retail worker are hardly comparable - but no NHS staff should obviously not be rude to their patients either. They however are in a much more pressured role - someone could die. There is no suggestion that the M&S worker was the end of their tether -“ FFS more stuff “ if impatient I could understand the comment about the OP weight is intentionally offensive.

Yes. And nobody has ever been gratuitously rude to me or the people I’ve been accompanying.

Beepopu · 12/07/2025 15:05

@TwinTantrums she was incredibly rude and there are no excuses for her poor behaviour. People saying give her some slack because of the heat etc, that's bullocks. It's not because it's hot right now that I'm going to start insulting around me. She was completely unprofessional and I would definitely report her. She needs to receive customer service skills training asap

Jacobs4 · 12/07/2025 15:06

TwinTantrums · 12/07/2025 14:03

I’m just as moody - it’s 30 degrees, none of my clothes fit and I came on my period last night! I apologised to her for having so much stuff but I don’t think being warm justified it

Nothing could justify such rudeness. Please please please complain. If we stop complaining about rudeness, we are complicit with it.

Lookuptotheskies · 12/07/2025 15:06

There's no defending her comment about your weight loss. What a nasty thing to say. 😡

So what your saying is its ok for some and not for others. Working with the general public absolutely is comparable. Drs already think their God the more people who think like you really dont help matters

Maybe shes on a warning?

Maybe other customers haven't bothered complaining?

Maybe shes new?

Who knows. But assuming shes at "breaking point" is bizarre.

Otoh if she is at breaking point, this getting flagged up to her employer might trigger her getting some help with her issues.

Either way, not op's issue if she gets sacked. She shouldn't be a prick 🤷‍♀️

Where is your hospital trust? Im under 4 and have spent nearly 40 years in and out of hospital and iv met a lot of horrible nhs staff who say the absolutely most vile things you could think of when your at your most vulnerable

Anywherebuthere · 12/07/2025 15:09

alexalisten · 12/07/2025 14:15

The last comment was not ok but surely you can grasp what size you are from trying a few things on. I can understand her being internally annoyed as taking a significant amount of clothes and then leaving half of them is just creating more work unnecessarily but she should of smiled and kept her gob shut

Not really. Especially after weight loss. Body shape changes. It really isn't easy to tell.
The fit of clothes in the same size can be different too.

Bobandbear25 · 12/07/2025 15:10

Thats horribly rude and unnecessary. Huge congratulations on your incredible weight loss, you must feel amazing, don’t let her put a dampener on it.
