To think that if the UK had a day

Celebrating the subjugation of a previous colony like India, for example, with bonfires burning Indian flags and effigies of Indian leaders, it would rightly be condemned and consigned to the history books? So why is the 12th of July tolerated, when Irish flags are burned on bonfires? Why is that OK?

Just curious. Or is it hatred masquerading as culture?

It is not ok. A very small group of selfish, brainless bigots think it is but no one else does.

LlynTegid · 12/07/2025 12:53

I think it is hatred and bigotry. Gatherings yes, not marches to celebrate a Dutchman defeating the rightful King.

Hatred masquerading as their idea of "culture"

zzplec · 12/07/2025 12:59

It's not happening in "the UK", just parts of NI. (Or do they have bonfires in Glasgow too?)

5dollah · 12/07/2025 13:05

I'm just wondering what to tell my kids when they see their flag being burned by our next door neighbours. It's genuinely very sad.

It certainly is helpful to discuss this. There is a world of dissent out there, violence and murder. We are very distracted by policing “micro aggressions” from seeing the bigger picture, which is that people don’t always play nicely together, and never have.
This is why we celebrate peace.

NI is in the UK! You don’t get to disown them when they’re being terrible!

The UK is shorthand for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
HTH.

What if they had a night where they burned an effigy of a Catholic or an effigy of the pope?
Remind me what the royal family represent and how they got that position? What if the very same battle they are celebrating resulted in laws that discriminated against Catholics and prevented them being Head of State in a modern democracy like the UK?

Very true. It's like it's an 'acceptable' form of discrimination.

Most people are unaware of it.

That poster is referencing the annual bonfire night celebration in Lewes, where they absolutely burn an effigy of the pope. The anti-Catholicism of bonfire night writ large.

Effigies of the pope are burned on Northern Ireland bonfires too, the current pope, as opposed to one particular historic pope in Lewes.

Oh! I didn’t know that. Well, that’s just lovely, isn’t it? 🙄
