What the hell happened to McDonald’s ?

Last night on the way home we popped into a Maccies drive thru . I haven’t been for months due to the Monday app deals being rubbish anyway the food was disgusting . The worst I’ve ever had from a McDonald’s , The filet o fish had blatantly been recooked as the fish had fries attached to the chewy as a boot batter and the cheese burger was from dinner time I think judging by how stale it was . My mate said hers the night before from her local one had been warmed up aswell …

But seriously the prices ?!! How can they justify it ! £2.19 for a mayo chicken or a cheese burger now (used to be 99p!) and the arch meal starts from £10.99 !!!
even the slush I had from a different maccies earlier in the day was just liquid and £3.19 !

McDonalds used to be a cheap and quick treat . How have the prices gone up so much and so quickly !!!

Do you still go to McDonald’s ? Has the standards dropped or something because I’ve never experienced such awful food .

The decor is very cold and minimalist too, I remember a train with Ronald McDonald and the Hamburgler in my local in the 1980’s. A new opened up near me, all concrete, no colour, looks like something from behind the iron curtain.

In the 80's they targeted mainly at children, now they don't.

And as so much is home delivery, the decor is considered less important.

Grendel7 · 12/07/2025 10:50

Had one that was raw in the middle years ago. Never been back. Am told the people serving are still monosyllabic zombies tho...

sandwichlover93 · 12/07/2025 10:56

i really don’t know how anyone thinks McDonald’s is a “treat”. It’s garbage.

If the food had been recooked it would be cremated. Also the filet of fish and fries are cooked in different fryers at other ends of the kitchen. Food can only be kept for 20 mins before it is discarded.

Source - Have worked at McDonald's.

You paid for cheap fast food and got exactly that.

If you want a Michelin star quality meal stop being such a skin flint and pay more...

Also regarding prices, this glorious government decided that 18 year olds are now entitled to the same NMW as someone who is 24+. The majority of McDonald's employees are those in the 18-24 brackets, the cost of paying their wages has increased significantly so prices have to increase or the business is not viable. If you want to blame anyone for increasing prices, it needs to be the labour party.

It's intentional, McDonalds profit margins are razor thin and it's all down to volume, if the restaurants isn't comfortable and a nice place to be you move on quickly. It's actually really clever but most consumers are too stupid to see it.

£2.79 for a happy meal?! Where do you live? It’s £4.39 for one where I am and don’t get me started on Chippy prices -£5 for chips here!

Edited

Ok that shows how often I go it’s now gone up to £3.89. I’m in the south east, don’t think it’s worth nearly £4!!! Where are you that it costs even more? I didn’t even know they changed prices regionally?!?

It’s about the same price as a supermarket meal deal or a coffee shop coffee. It’s not that bad really. Everything has gone up

I live in Oxford (unfortunately!). It’s surprising how much the price varies though as 10 miles away in Bicester they are £4.19 !

I love a good takeaway but I’ve never been that fussed about McDonalds. Wouldn’t bother me if I never had another one ever again but DP and the DC love it.

We moved a couple of years ago and thankfully we don’t have one in the local town - nearest one is about 10 miles away so that’s saved me from constant requests to get one 😂

I don’t think they’re much different than they always were though. Crappy, processed food without much flavour 🤷‍♀️ I’d be surprised if the food was reheated from a previous day though as every McDs I’ve ever been to has always been busy!

There are other much nicer fast food places at the same kind of price point so I’ve never really understood the appeal of McDs. I guess strong marketing from way back when and then it became culturally established? Plus the fact there’s loads of outlets compared to places like BurgerKing or Tim Horton?

marylou25 · 12/07/2025 11:13

Food costs have gone up! It can't have escaped you that supermarket shopping is costing more and McDonalds isn't exempt from price increases.

I haven't been there in I'd say 25 yrs since I had young kids but my brother always says the secret to getting fresh food is make a change to the order, ask for no onion/lettuce/tomato or whatever on the burger and they have to make a fresh one.

flyonmyi · 12/07/2025 11:15

I grew up in the US and have memories of eating a Big Mac that was juicy - there was a sort of dopamine hit from the combo of mayo and pickle too.

I haven’t have a McDs for years but I had one a few months ago and it was like cardboard. The burger was dry and the fries were tasteless - they used to be well known for their hot, salty fries.

My guess is they’ve cornered the kids market and it’s now aimed at little ones who think this is a big treat (and who aren’t overly fussed about taste/texture). McDs delicious looking ads definitely don't match the reality.

I was wondering why the quarter pounder was different!
I has a filet o fish the other week. It took ages but was piping hot and freshly cooked so I don't think its ordered much.
Also if you don't like the thought of kids having to pay for their uniform at McDs don't order delivery. Deliveroo, just eat etc are doing nothing to prevent illegal workers delivering for them on illegal bikes. They are basically part of the huge black economy, fuelled by people paying £££ to get their takeaways delivered.

Edited

I worked at McDs in the 90s when food was pre prepared, the fillet o fish was always made fresh at my branch, at most we’d make an extra one if we were getting a lot of orders, just in case. Not sure if this was the case everywhere though.

McDonalds has always been minging.

Weather spoons is cheaper. You get a proper plate and table service.

And a rabid brexiteer/ Farage supporting owner to line the pockets of

I guess one just needs to ignore the sexual abuse issue

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c337m3v3mgzo.amp

That shit happens everywhere! I’ve had far more sexual abuse aimed at me in corporate roles than I ever did working in McDonald’s as a teen.

Lollapalo · 12/07/2025 11:19

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 12/07/2025 00:39

The poor kids who work there pay for their own uniform out of their shit wages.

Or mine did anyway, I'm not sure if all franchises are run the same way.

Can’t be true. McDonald’s say uniform is free. UK law says if a minimum wage job it must be free. Hence, it’s free. They were probably having you on for some cash

I think it’s been established that it’s particularly bad at McDonalds.

magicpant · 12/07/2025 11:26

Is it just me, not a frequenter of McDonalds right enough, who thinks £2.19 isn’t expensive at all for a chicken or a cheeseburger? I get that you say it ‘used’ to be 99p but that doesn’t make it expensive for what it is at a little over £2

MidnightMeltdown · 12/07/2025 11:38

You’re complaining about paying £2.19 for a burger? Seriously? You can’t even buy a a coffee for that in most places. How cheap do you expect animal flesh to be?

Maybe it used to be 99p, but as we all know, everything has gone up, including food, labour and transport. YABU moaning about the price at one of the cheapest places you can possibly eat.

OldieButBaddie · 12/07/2025 11:41

I haven't been to McDonalds since 1984, doesn't sound like I'm missing much!

I heard they lie about the milkshake machine not working.

Yeah it’s not broken, they just don’t want to clean it apparently - or dont have time to

HRTQueen · 12/07/2025 12:05

the busier the better as they all have the
same supplier but it will be freshly cooked and hot

it’s still cheap compared to most restaurants/takeaways and it’s never been good quality it’s cheap food that is tasty because of the mix of salt and sugar

I love McDonald’s I want food sometimes that’s high in sugar, salt and fat and easy to eat McDonald’s, KFC and Burger King (both better quality food) are just that crap food that has a certain taste/mix that can be satisfying

Beyondburnout · 12/07/2025 12:30

happinessischocolate · 12/07/2025 11:50

Makes sense. It's always broken in a heat wave. I think I need to make my own milkshakes.

TicklishMintDuck · 12/07/2025 13:19

Overpriced and overhyped. Plus the food is always cold. Had a much better experience going to McDonalds in Malta last year. Food was hot, burger properly assembled and they do steakhouse fries.
