What the hell happened to McDonald’s ?

Last night on the way home we popped into a Maccies drive thru . I haven’t been for months due to the Monday app deals being rubbish anyway the food was disgusting . The worst I’ve ever had from a McDonald’s , The filet o fish had blatantly been recooked as the fish had fries attached to the chewy as a boot batter and the cheese burger was from dinner time I think judging by how stale it was . My mate said hers the night before from her local one had been warmed up aswell …

But seriously the prices ?!! How can they justify it ! £2.19 for a mayo chicken or a cheese burger now (used to be 99p!) and the arch meal starts from £10.99 !!!
even the slush I had from a different maccies earlier in the day was just liquid and £3.19 !

McDonalds used to be a cheap and quick treat . How have the prices gone up so much and so quickly !!!

Do you still go to McDonald’s ? Has the standards dropped or something because I’ve never experienced such awful food .

Pints are around £8 where I live (UK city) but then we tend to go to craft places. We only go to McDonald's a couple of times a year but quality always seems consistent and I still think it's pretty cheap. I wouldn't want meat to be any cheaper to be honest

purpleygrey · 12/07/2025 07:52

Mcds has always been consistent imo. I’ve never had a bad one. Prices have risen the same as everything else

Can't remember the last time I ate McD. Maybe 20 years ago? It was a breakfast bap and sat like concrete in my stomach for hours 🤣 and I said never again! I would take the kids to a drive-thru maybe once a month, but they said it wasn't great after a while, so they had Burger King after that. Then they moved onto Subway and stuck with that for years!

DD loves the McFlurry. But she has to check the app before driving to the local drive-thru to make sure the machine is working...9 x out of 10 its out of order. 😔

I was there with my kids last night for the first time in ages. They needed a quick meal before an event and we had no time to go home. It was very busy but fast, clean, all seemed freshly made and cost under £15 for all 3 of us. Plus the kids were delighted with their toys from the happy meals.

if you’re getting burgers that have been sitting for a while maybe you went at a quiet time? I think the trick is to customise them slightly (I ask for no pickles on the burgers) and then they have to freshly make them.

New2you · 12/07/2025 08:19

McDonald’s is insanely cheap even with the price increases. Also I find it’s pretty consistent compared to other companies offering fast food

Customising doesn’t work as the burgers are all pre heated, nothing is cooked to order, it’s just assembled to order. I’ve seen them take the burger patty out of one burger sat in the serving area and re use it in another one. Burger King do the same - I was waiting at the counter and watched them take a burger out of the serving chutes, removed the beef patty and put it in to another bun which they tried to give to me - I refused it and told them I didn’t want one that had been sat there and insisted they give me a “new” one. I try to avoid both McDonald’s and Burger King these days as the quality is crap and most times it’s not hot, often barely warm.

We're not frequent Maccas visitors, but DD loves the happy meals so we started to go when DH & DS are away for their hobby occasionally. It's too expensive for us all to go together.

Eating in was depressing. It's empty as they don't want you inside & make it unwelcoming and dark. They've now taken the only non fried item off the menu so I just get a drink and eat when we get home. Thy've actually forgotten my food as well & waited 10 minutes at the empty counter with two reminders to the manager to fix it. He forgot.

It's telling how bad it's become. Their car park & drive through used to be full. Now it's almost empty while the expanding range of competition in the area have long queues.

Same with Wagamama where I used to go with the kids at least once a fortnight after soft play. Katsu curry has a smear of curry like in a Michelin star restaurant and the slices of veg are wafer thin. Price is going up and up though. 🤷‍♀️ I’ve started making my own as it’s just taking the piss.

we’ve been going to Stevenage and Hatfield wagas for years and that’s the way the katsu has always been. it’s quite minimal looking. I have firecracker curry or raisukaree and there’s loads of veg.

MikeRafone · 12/07/2025 08:20

I have builder in and he was saying the happy meal isn't 99p anymore, its £4.50

thats not happy but bleeding miserable

Milkshake machine is never working either

A thousand times this!😡

MaySea · 12/07/2025 08:23

I only ever go when in Europe if there's nothing else around, and even then only of they have a 5 Euro meal deal on! In the UK we have the occasional Burger King with their 2 Whopper/Chicken Royal meals for £10.99 on the app.

MarySueSaidBoo · 12/07/2025 08:24

My 18 year old step-grandson works in one. Let's just say that he doesn't eat anything out of there.... and tells family not to risk it either. You've got mostly young kids "cooking" who haven't done anything other than basic in house training in food hygiene and all work part time around school/college. Cleaning is basic at best, and don't even go there with oil changing/recycling. His boss is decent enough, they're all paid well and on time but that's about the only positive.

The problem is that they’re prioritising the just eat and Deliveroo who are getting the “hotter” food due to the travel time otherwise it would be cold on delivery, so counter and drive through customers are getting crap service and crap quality, cold food.

It’s not just badly managed outlets either, it’s become the norm. We go when we’re travelling so use lots of different ones and it’s now rare to get fresh hot food, and, yes, most of the time told to park up at the drive through as the food isn’t ready but then it’s still served cold!

I think some of their restaurants are definitely better than others as we avoid some branches. We’ve gone to plenty for years too as we both love it, as do the DC now. In most restaurants, there was always a good amount of curry sauce and the slices of veg were either chunky ish or, if thinner, they gave more. Love that dish you order too!

CoastalCalm · 12/07/2025 04:16

The two are completely different offerings and as most Wetherspoons don’t have drive through or car parking even lack the convenience factor

If you want a burger chips and a fizzy drink it's the same food. Almost as convenient. Oh and hot.

Drive through mcDs means you get to sit in your car and eat cold food. They have been rubbish for years.

NewsdeskJC · 12/07/2025 08:32

Depends on branch i think.
We have 2 near us. One down on the front coastal town. It's terrible
Much nicer one nearby.
I prefer the cook to order. Order on the touch screen and sit down and wait.

Goatinthegarden · 12/07/2025 08:34

I haven’t been to McDonalds in years, last time was late one night in an airport abroad when nothing else was open and it was totally fine, I liked it, but I don’t want to give them my money if I can help it.

I used to love Wagamama’s when they first arrived, but over time I’ve realised it’s about £60 for two, for a meal that’s churned out and done in about half an hour with minimal ingredients - and the quality was dire last time I went, about two years ago. There are lots of nicer, local restaurants that do much better for the price.

I also quit Domino’s when collecting two pizzas started getting close to £40. We have a local wood fired pizza place that does the most incredible takeaway pizzas and it comes to under £25 for two.

Anyway, everything is getting much more expensive, we’re definitely choosing to eat out less, but when we do, we prefer to give our money to local businesses.

I avoided macdonald on a Sunday night in France, many years ago and went to buffalo grill or something - I wished id gone to macdonalds - it was rank

aGirlLikeJesamine · 12/07/2025 08:54

no way do i go to mcdonalds
not been for more than 10 years

CyberStrider · 12/07/2025 09:02

Caspianberg · 12/07/2025 06:35

@Yerroblemom1923 - I think that’s unlikely. A standard happy meal includes orange juice, apple juice, milk or water here. The only way they would have coke is if parent ordered one separately here.

You can get a coke as part of a happy meal in the UK, on the app it's not listed immediately you have to click other but then it will let you select a soft drink.

I often have a happy meal as if you get a cheeseburger in a happy meal it lets you add lettuce and cucumber.

I eat McDonalds more often than I'd like but I travel around a lot and I'm coeliac and I know I can always get some fries and a burger minus the bun or some veggies dippers.

It’s £2.79 not £4.50. You wouldn’t get a portion. Of chips in our local chippy for that!

Sunshineandrainbow · 12/07/2025 09:08

Shame the wrap of the day has just gone up from 1.99 to 2.29. that's was good value to grab for lunch once a month!

Sunshineandrainbow · 12/07/2025 09:08

TourdeFrance25 · 12/07/2025 00:57

How are the prices?

do they vary depending on location?

it's been well over a year since I've been. I'm not supposed to eat it (health issues) so it was a very rare event, so not up in his the pricing works.

In my area they have different prices if they are a franchise

ThriveIn2025 · 12/07/2025 09:10

The thing that kills me is their queuing system. The machines never have paper for a receipt so you have to desperately try and remember your number. It then goes into a “preparing” queue, while you stand staring at a screen waiting. Then it goes into a “collect” queue, this doesn’t mean you can collect. You have to wait while everyone else’s order is called. Then they wipe the whole lot and you don’t know whether to go and harass already stressed employees or hope it’s coming. It takes forever and it’s stressful. Two times I ordered in advance and it never came out. The number didn’t even make it to the screen and when I asked they realised it wasn’t even in the system. I just can’t be bothered with it anymore.
