This is it - climate change is really beginning to bite

We know the climate is changing and it is us. This particular heat wave feels like the next step up after a winter of devastating storms.

YABU - It's just too hot
YANBU - This is the taste of things to come.

I agree.
Funny how some people only think it’s important when they’re impacted - don’t they watch the news?

Stripeyanddotty · 11/07/2025 16:32

Yes - it’s becoming irreversible.

MaggieBsBoat · 11/07/2025 16:32

Yes we’ve gone past the tipping point. Sad really but now we have to get on with it.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 11/07/2025 16:33

The climate has totally changed in terms of what we can grow in our garden, which birds we see when, which fish visit the coast when etc.
We have actual grapes in our garden and typically it would be more of a blackcurrant or raspberry climate.

I think people believe what they want, especially those who didn't pay attention in school and don't understand even basic physics or chemistry.

Yes, and it's scaring the hell out of me.

TheBuffetInspector · 11/07/2025 16:39

This planet has had many cycles of temperature.

CFCs banned in the 90s. The Ozone layer being the big issue.

We can't go back.

We'll never make it right.

It's irreversible now. The planet wants, what the planet wants.

The dinosaurs were impacted.

We are SO fucking self absorbed to think this is about us.

Yep, its here

This is true, the Romans had vineyards near Hadrians wall, indicating a hot cycle around the time what is now the UK was part of the Roman Empire.

The thing to realise is that no matter how this hot cycle has occurred, by mans activity of the worlds climate changing of its own accord, or indeed a combination, it cannot be changed.

What we can do is change how and where we live, what we can grow etc. Its not existential for humanity, and will likely pass with time (although in none of our lifetimes)

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/07/2025 17:05

It's called summer

Yes it is Summer but UK has never typically matched mainland Europe temperatures 😩

Not if you are elderly, an infant, unwell, working especially physical labour.

MigGril · 11/07/2025 17:21

It most likely won't last though. We have a mild climate in the UK due to one major thing. The Gulf stream, as the ice melts and cools the oceans the Gulf stream will shift. The longer rang forecast for the UK will be much colder. We are after all on the same latitude as Moscow, although not land lock so we probably won't get that cold.

Yes the climate does go in cycles and things have been very different in the past but we have forced this change faster then has been seen before (excluding a meter impact). The problem with that is species don't have time to adapt and you cause mass extinction.

Yes I'm fairly sure the planet will survive, but will we. That's another question?

yes I’m on the verge of calling 111 to be admitted , low kidney function Crohn’s and becoming dehydrated despite doing everything possible to avoid

Caramelty · 11/07/2025 17:25

@MigGril well, yes for now. But the Gulf Stream is going to fail at some point and then the UK climate is totally f*ed - “Climate change is causing the Gulf Stream, a warm ocean current that brings heat to Western Europe, to weaken. This weakening is primarily due to the melting of glaciers and ice sheets, which adds freshwater to the North Atlantic, reducing the salinity and density of the water. This change disrupts the natural sinking process that drives the Gulf Stream, leading to a slowdown or even a collapse of the current”

Not if you are elderly, an infant, unwell, working especially physical labour.

Or in a small, hot classroom with no air conditioning or fans (no budget), with 32 tetchy Year 8 students. And there are still two weeks of term left! 🥵🫠

Maybe actually check your history. Seriously. We were born coming out of a mini ice Age, but even at that, all the uncompromised data shows no particular change in global temperatures since the forties.

LemonLass · 11/07/2025 17:28

Wowwee1234 · 11/07/2025 17:14

Agreed.

Some people just can't see the wood for the trees or being deliberately antagonising, @Wowwee1234

For anyone with the atttidue of "just give me a Temu bargain (insert any prolific manufacturer of crap that breaks and bought by greedy individuals)", perhaps you don't give a hoot landfill for broken tat (or worker's rights/welfare in Temu example)?

Surely only people who throw empty vapes on the pavement and their plastic in the river think there is no problem with global weather extremes. Jeez 😫

tobee · 11/07/2025 17:29

I think it's better to look at the bigger picture; the rest of the world rather than just the U.K. And for more than just one summer.

I'm not sure our personal experiences are enough.

But at least some climate scientists say it's on its way if not here already.

Caramelty · 11/07/2025 17:29

Perhaps it doesn’t matter if humanity survives? We are after all just a blip in the expanse of the universe and time.

I think what matters is the potential for vast suffering in the next fifty years. I don’t think this will play out well in a spirit of universal humanity and compassion. Perhaps as a species we deserve what we get…

Fearfulsaints · 11/07/2025 17:30

We've always had weather but there seems to be a huge amount of evidence that its changing and changing faster than at other points of time

The problem is you can't say today is hot, thats its climate change as we have indeed always had hot summer days.

But you can say the last 20 years were hotter than the previous 100 or whatever it is the graphs show.

I think its about the frequency of events too.

And it’s bloody lovely.

Not for farmers. Good luck eating spuds this autumn. They are probably going to cost a fortune.

Don't get me wrong, I love sunshine and hate winter. But we've barely had rain since March in the south.
