This is it - climate change is really beginning to bite

We know the climate is changing and it is us. This particular heat wave feels like the next step up after a winter of devastating storms.

YABU - It's just too hot
YANBU - This is the taste of things to come.

What? We've had 2 years of grey drizzle - and that's been the good days!

We have a summer like this every couple of years. We had a scorcher in 2020, and similar in 2018.

I believe in climate change, I think, but I'm not sure this summer is indicative of anything at all.

munchingmunch · 11/07/2025 18:12

"Spring 2025 was the UK's warmest and sunniest on record. Hot on its heels, June became the warmest month on record for England."

This is new

Exactly!

I do not deny that the climate is changing but we'll be back to grey skies and drizzle soon enough.

I'm going to enjoy being able to go outside for a bit without worrying that I will trigger a Trigeminal neuralgia attack.

1976 springs to mind. I was 4 and definitely remember the heat. And the ladybirds.

I remember this, I was 10, no other summer has matched it for me, yes we’ve had heatwaves since but nothing like 76, this one is starting to though, DC haven’t broken up in England yet, it will probably be down hill from then, I think our summers have got earlier, August for the last few years for me has a September feel.

Shellyash · 11/07/2025 18:15

LemonLass · 11/07/2025 17:08

Yes it is Summer but UK has never typically matched mainland Europe temperatures 😩

It's not reached late 30s, early 40s? It's summer at last, been waiting for this for 30 years when I was a kid and we had hot summers

BunnyLake · 11/07/2025 18:15

This heatwave is nothing compared to 1976.

Locutus2000 · 11/07/2025 18:16

There have always been hot summers, but they are increasing dramatically in number and frequency.

UK weather: Is this heat 'just summer'?

2025 is already shaping up to be an extraordinary year for weather records in parts of the UK.

munchingmunch · 11/07/2025 18:17

Re the 76 heatwave

"That year still holds the record for the longest-lasting heatwave in the UK—16 consecutive days—and the highest June temperature ever recorded"

"However, June 2025 has been hotter when considering average temperatures."

"Furthermore, analysis of historical weather data shows that the summer of 1976 was an isolated event within an otherwise much cooler decade. It also affected a smaller geographic area compared to today's heatwaves."

scalt · 11/07/2025 18:17

The cold, the grey and the drizzle will be back soon enough. Meanwhile, I am going to make the most of every ray of sunshine, and hide this thread, like I always do the ones moaning about the heat. Nine such threads so far this summer, and counting.

Gbafa · 11/07/2025 18:18

Bog off. It's just a bit of hot weather. I like it.

TinkerbellStarbright · 11/07/2025 18:19

People only care when it directly affects them. Hot day? They’ll go and sunbathe. bad weather? They stay inside. It doesn’t really affect them all that much.

from a different perspective this extreme weather causes a huge strain on the nhs. Anyone with d and v is more likely to need IV fluids. People with kidney issues are likely struggling. The elderly. But people don’t care until it’s them.

our planet has been abused by humans. For way too long. The amount of animals we’ve made become extinct is a total disgrace so it doesn’t surprise me people aren’t bothered about other stuff.

Catwoman8 · 11/07/2025 18:22

To all the haters, don't worry as it will be pissing it down next week when the kids break up for the summer hols.

It's 3 days of 'extreme' temperatures.

munchingmunch · 11/07/2025 18:23

People forget how dangerous heat can be

"The 1976 heatwave was estimated to have led to 700 extra deaths in the UK. In the record breaking summer of 2022 there were an estimated 2,985 excess deaths associated with heat."

menopausalmare · 11/07/2025 18:24

Yes, this is the new normal

munchingmunch · 11/07/2025 18:25

It's 3 days of 'extreme' temperatures.

It's the third heatwave of the year...

Lonelycrab · 11/07/2025 18:25

Oh It’s undeniably here.

The problem is, those that are in a position to change things, the current generation in power and the generation before, won’t be around to see the imminent climate collapse, so they just don’t care. Neither do their supporters, because they won’t be here either. They all want more stuff/growth/money and they don’t like being told they should actually stop or at least slow down.

Pretty clear what the scientific consensus on this is. I don’t think people are actually too stupid to not get this… it’s that they’re too selfish, so come up with all sorts of dodgy, un verified studies by dodgy agencies to support their claims. I trust people like ie NASA and the numerous other great scientific organisations that all say the same thing.

The poster on page 1 saying humanity will likely wipe itself out anyway, and in the scheme of things, the earth will probably bounce back- strong agree.

All those saying it’s all a load of nonsense… relax! Enjoy your meaningless consumption, carry on as you are, you’ve nothing to worry about!

Its your children’s children that will be the ones doing the worrying, because the current generations ignored the warnings and were essentially too selfish

Are you pretty good about not taking holidays or limiting dc etc?

The children's children probably won't exist tbh as so many aren't having them now!

Don’t try and play the hypocrisy card ES

Holiday in wales, in a tent thank you very much.

Reggiebo · 11/07/2025 18:30

For those that can remember....it was like this in 1976. The tarmac on the melted. So it's not new...it's weather

Everything causes a huge strain on the NHS, because it's shit. Badly managed, bureaucratic, overstaffed and understaffed in all the wrong places, disjointed systems, endless waste, buying 20p-worth of paracetamol for £20.

You'd really be making a rod for your own back if you cared about easing the burden on the NHS. It's there to serve us, not the other way around.

You what now? Bizarre at ‘card’.

Great news re tent holidays.

I don't think it helps to be too dramatic about these things. Climate change is inevitable - it will require our children to have a stoic outlook and the ability to adapt. It won't be helped by being raised by chicken littles who induce anxiety by descending into misery on a lovely day.
