This is it - climate change is really beginning to bite

We know the climate is changing and it is us. This particular heat wave feels like the next step up after a winter of devastating storms.

YABU - It's just too hot
YANBU - This is the taste of things to come.

Regardless of the prognosis for the planet/ the species longer term, do the people saying "Just enjoy the nice weather" have so little theory of mind that they fail to conceptualise that for some people it isn't even vaguely "nice"; it makes them / us feel hideously ill and unable to function?!

"Nice" is subjective not objective or absolute.

munchingmunch · 11/07/2025 19:05

Each one has only lasted a couple of days though, it isn't like we have had a constant period of extreme temperatures.

I replied to a post saying it was 3 days of extreme temperatures, my point was it has been more than 3 days. I never said they are consecutive.

pollyglot · 11/07/2025 19:05

And down here in the north of New Zealand, middle of winter, I'm sitting here at 5.30 a.m. and it's 16 deg.c. Last week it was 20deg in the afternoon. There has been rain heavier than I've ever seen it, sweet potato crop rotting in the ground, citrus covered in mould. It's here alright, folks. I suppose the only good thing about it is that the next ice age had been delayed by a few thousand years. But that will come too.

For those that can remember....it was like this in 1976. The tarmac on the melted. So it's not new...it's weather

Apart that 99.9 percentage of scientist know that it's climate change not just global warming. I weirdly believe them more than my own experience of one year in the 70s.

munchingmunch · 11/07/2025 19:07

What I find so weird about everyone who harps on about '1976 I was there' is that there seems to be a wilful refusal to clock that an isolated event during cooler average temperatures is not the same thing as having '1976' every year

Do you really find it weird @BarilynBordeaux? I think it's entirely to be expected of some.

shuggles · 11/07/2025 19:10

I am relieved that most people selected "you are not being unreasonable" option.

Today was disgusting. The UK should never be this warm. Even just imagine how revolting and unhygienic everyone is walking around covered in sweat.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 11/07/2025 19:10

The pandemic changed everything for me in terms of Mother Nature deciding our fate in the end. We aren’t going to be able to control a large scale pandemic if it takes hold in the same way that we can’t reverse climate change.

You’re freaking out about the heat but I’m more worried about us becoming an extremely cold country due to the weakening of El Niño. Being freezing cold and having the have the heating on 10 months of the year sounds much more concerning than hot summers.

Whatafustercluck · 11/07/2025 19:10

One day, the sun will engulf the earth anyway.

So there's a cheery thought to put everything in perspective.

Thankfully all our world leaders are fighting determinedly to fix this problem.

All?
I can think of one who certainly isn't

TheSwarm · 11/07/2025 19:14

The science of humans causing unnatural climate change is pretty much indisputable.

You can say - and plenty do - that you don't care, but it's happening.

CheekyFish · 11/07/2025 19:15

Caramelty · 11/07/2025 17:25

@MigGril well, yes for now. But the Gulf Stream is going to fail at some point and then the UK climate is totally f*ed - “Climate change is causing the Gulf Stream, a warm ocean current that brings heat to Western Europe, to weaken. This weakening is primarily due to the melting of glaciers and ice sheets, which adds freshwater to the North Atlantic, reducing the salinity and density of the water. This change disrupts the natural sinking process that drives the Gulf Stream, leading to a slowdown or even a collapse of the current”

Its not clear if you’re worried about it being too hot or too cold

The sooner that Homo Sapiens has been wiped from the planet the better.

Lovely.

This is fine to mention, but the thread title is referring to the heat over a couple of days.

I don’t think that is the most telling thing, or it as they put it.

I have adjusted some behaviour, but it’s a personal thing for my dc pretty much. I still do stuff though that contributes to climate change, so not everything. Plus I have dc which is a factor already.

The thread title in itself says climate change is really starting to bite. I think climate change is starting to bite; we have seen incredibly high temperatures all across Europe these last few weeks. It’s hot here now, and this summer in this country is already facing drought; crops will fail and my garden is already yellow.

Now how much you want to attribute that to “it’s just summer get over it” is up to you. Los Angeles disappeared in a fire storm just months ago, half of Canada and Europe was on fire last summer and this summer has only just begun. So it’s looking pretty clear where things are heading imo.

N0sferatu · 11/07/2025 19:17

@CoastalCalm how are you doing now? I hope it's beginning to cool down wherever you are.

I suppose that depends where you are , and what you class as extreme. Where I am though, the v.high temps are only forecast for today/tomorrow/Sunday and then it's forecast for storms next week with lower temps. I am just fed up of people moaning about it , it is the middle of summer and its not unusual.

Same and agree with last para

I think walking around sweaty is the least of our problems . . .

TheFrendo · 11/07/2025 19:21

I don't see doomaggeddon. I see summer.

Back in 1976, when the climate sensationalist fear was the imminent arrival of the next ice age, there was a hot summer after a very dry autumn and winter

... 15 consecutive days from 23 June to 7 July temperatures reached 32.2 °C (90 °F) somewhere in England. Furthermore, five days saw temperatures exceed 35 °C (95 °F).

alexalisten · 11/07/2025 19:22

Its summer

Perhaps it doesn’t matter if humanity survives? We are after all just a blip in the expanse of the universe and time.

I think what matters is the potential for vast suffering in the next fifty years. I don’t think this will play out well in a spirit of universal humanity and compassion. Perhaps as a species we deserve what we get…

I agree.
Makes me so sad, sad for DD. I pray she doesn’t want children. It’s going to be a horrible world. Luckily I suppose I won’t be hear to see it.

The U.K. just thinks yay it’s hot.
Other countries will soon be uninhabitable, Greece is already burning every year. Where are all these people going to live.

If I could get to Canada I absolutely bloody would- but Canada doesn’t accept anyone Willy nilly like we do.

Wtfneighbour · 11/07/2025 19:26

We’ve had a week long spell of decent weather in the height of summer. Calm down.

Gardenbumblebee · 11/07/2025 19:26

To quote George Carlin "The planet is fine, the people are fucked!"

Once we kill ourselves off, the planet will recalibrate and enter a new age. It's a shame as there is so much beauty in the world right now. After we leave it'll be just the roaches, crocodiles, and W H Smiths.
