Anyone live in birmingham? Feels so full of crime and just generally an awful place to live compared to London and Manchester which are full of nice areas. AIBU?

Doesn’t sound like you’ve ever been to Birmingham tbh.

UsernameTaken76 · 10/07/2025 19:35

I’m a proud Brummie. Yes it has slightly less nice areas but so do those other cities. If it wasn’t a nice place to be there wouldn’t have been so many people there for big cultural events this past weekend.

Fluffyholeysocks · 10/07/2025 19:38

What area are you looking at specifically? High Schools or Primary Schools?

Jennps · 10/07/2025 19:38

Most big cities are a shithole in this country, to be honest. Indicative of the general state of the nation. Birmingham probably is one of the worst ones.

LoudSnoringDog · 10/07/2025 19:39

Birmingham is a big place. Which areas are you referring to?

ExtraOnions · 10/07/2025 19:41

There are nice bits, and shit bits of London, ditto Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle.. all cities really. I don’t think Brum is more or less than any of these

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 10/07/2025 19:43

You need to specify which area you're referring to. Generally, Birmingham and its people are lovely.

Domino45 · 10/07/2025 19:47

I'm a Brummie. There are nice and less nice places like most. The city centre has been having lots of work done in recent years and it does look more run down (in my view) than years ago. But is always busy and has good places to eat/drink. I guess it depends if you're used to city life and how variable that can be.

Mercurial123 · 10/07/2025 19:58

Manchester city centre is now depressing its gone downhill in the last four/five years. Birmingham has a nicer feel to it. None of them however can beat Leeds or Liverpool.

Haggisfish3 · 10/07/2025 20:02

Birmingham is great. Yabvu.

BeachPossum · 10/07/2025 20:04

I went once for a conference and it was fucking awful. Consistently the worst, most inconsiderate and dangerous driving I've ever encountered, so many rude and aggro people, and the bits I saw were hideous.

There must be lovely bits and I'm sure most of the people living there are nice and normal but there was a sufficiently high percentage of real arseholes to make it feel like a misery.

edwinbear · 10/07/2025 20:10

I’m currently sat in a Harvester in Birmingham, having driven from London to watch DD in an athletics competition tomorrow. It’s far more pleasant than Lewisham, in SE London, where I live. I’m pretty confident I’m not going to get stabbed on the walk back to my Premier Inn. I couldn’t say the same in Lewisham.

murasaki · 10/07/2025 20:11

Proud Brummie here, even if I've moved away, my parents, sister and her family still live there. It's great. If you don't like it don't go, we won't miss you.

Roseblooms · 10/07/2025 20:12

Much of Birmingham is an absolute shit hole and I say this as a life long Brummie who worked across the city and knows it like the back of her hand. However there are some lovely parts and YABU to say that Manchester and London are full of nice areas, I am sure they have their fair share of shit holes and crime.

anyzee · 10/07/2025 20:13

Last time I was there was about 4 or so years ago. I enjoyed my stay, even though I had travelled there for a funeral..... I stayed down near the canals and the atmosphere was really nice around there. I remember thinking how easy it was to get from the airport to the city, then from the city to Sutton Coldfield (funeral) and back to the airport from there. I was impressed with that, but coming from a place with crap public transport I was starry eyed lol!

Is this The Mailbox? It's beautiful eating outside in summer overlooking the canal.

MustBeThursday · 10/07/2025 20:20

I grew up in Birmingham, although we now live just outside of the borders. It is no more or less horrible than any other comparable big city. It’s certainly much nicer living there than it was living in London, where we lived when we were just married.

flirtygirl · 10/07/2025 20:23

Loads of nice places in Birmingham and some beautiful parks.

Every city has horrible places, in fact even most towns and villages have some awful areas.

There does seem to be managed decline in the UK but hopefully it will get better.

I can't remember the name of the place but it was down by Gas Street Basin. Lovely sunny evening and yes it was lovely.

ParmaVioletTea · 10/07/2025 20:25

Have you ever been to Birmingham? More trees than Paris. Bournville and surrounds amongst the safest areas in the UK.

Goady post alert (wish we had an emoji for that).

I was one of them! To see Jeff Lynne, would have liked to have seen Black Sabbath too but too late for tickets. I bloody love Birmingham, and the area around the canal near the Utilita was very vibrant and everyone was seemed so friendly, always get that vibe in Birmingham tbh. ❤️

mrsmalaprop · 10/07/2025 20:35

I’ve lived in London and Manchester and now in Birmingham. I love them all in different ways. I always thought I’d hate Brum. I had an image of it being very industrial and bleak, but it isn’t. It’s very green. There are parks and green spaces around every corner.

I live in Bournville and my DDad is in Edgbaston. Both beautiful. This whole part of South Birmingham (Moseley, Kings Heath, Kings Norton, Harborne) is as pleasant as any similar suburbs in the other cities.

I also like the city centre, although they are still doing loads of work, so it’s in constant flux.

I find it friendly with lots of great community stuff going on.

Of course it has grim bits, bad driving and crime - because it’s a major city and that’s true of every single one.

Wow, thank you for this. I was beginning to think Lewisham and east london were nicer than birmingham
