Anyone live in birmingham? Feels so full of crime and just generally an awful place to live compared to London and Manchester which are full of nice areas. AIBU?

I went once for a conference and it was fucking awful. Consistently the worst, most inconsiderate and dangerous driving I've ever encountered, so many rude and aggro people, and the bits I saw were hideous.

There must be lovely bits and I'm sure most of the people living there are nice and normal but there was a sufficiently high percentage of real arseholes to make it feel like a misery.

I live here and yes I totally agree with the driving indeed , people seem angry ! And driving to and from work near the city centre makes me anxious every day also agree with your other comments . I am no longer a proud brummie !

Purpleballoo · 10/07/2025 21:46

There are some nice parts but generally I don’t like it and find there’s a bit of an edge to it. I just don’t like the vibe.

bakebeans · 10/07/2025 21:47

I’ve been three times. Absolutely hated it

DY10DY11 · 10/07/2025 21:48

I think it gets bad press. I've lived nearby Worcestershire for donkeys years now but for the first few years, I was completely put off Birmingham by bad press. When I actually went, I thought it was great. It's got great culture and people. Yes there are dodgy bits. All cities have dodgy bits though.

JazzyBBBG · 10/07/2025 21:52

Why does it feel so full of crime? What have you experienced? Are you my uncle who lives in Sussex who thinks we are all gangsters outside the SE?

As someone who works in Birmingham, Manchester and London I can wholeheartedly say I find Birmingham the safest and least threatening. I would also say the cleanest. Walking down Piccadilly in Manchester is disgustingly filthy and last week in London wearing flip flops I had to wipe my feet off after two hours because they went black!

I'd suggest you maybe head north of Watford and experience a more pleasant way of life.

Pretty rude!

some parts of Birmingham are very nice and incredibly expensive (house prices rival down south).

like any places there are rough places and nice places, parts of Manchester are rough as hell and crime is sky high in London and some areas are terrible!

JustSawJohnny · 10/07/2025 22:23

What an ignorant load of crap.

Every major city has it's grim parts, but overall Brum is a great place to live.

Some really lovely areas to live, great travel links, great restaurants, shopping, theatre, markets, museums, concert venues, sport venues and LOTS of green space/parks.

I have no idea why you're making such a fuss.

JustSawJohnny · 10/07/2025 22:25

ParmaVioletTea · 10/07/2025 20:25

Have you ever been to Birmingham? More trees than Paris. Bournville and surrounds amongst the safest areas in the UK.

Goady post alert (wish we had an emoji for that).

We used to live in Bournville and I can confirm that more goes down in the 'naice' little rural village we moved to than we ever saw there!

Really lovely place to live.

Love going to Brum for a bit of shopping or a night out. Im about 45 minutes drive away. Much prefer it to Liverpool or Manchester.

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 10/07/2025 22:32

Lived in the posh bit Solihull for 20 odd years working in the city centre. We left, it became a shit hole. My son was the Lilly person in his class whose first language was English. It has an air of intimidation that was t there before, it’s dirty and unfriendly. It is an absolute cess pit now.

AngelsandAliens · 10/07/2025 21:40

I am from Birmingham and still live there there and totally agree with your post. I hate it I can’t wait to leave one day it’s awful !

Leave - we did after loving living there for 20 years. It wasn’t safe for my son.

LGBirmingham · 10/07/2025 22:34

It's great, it's the UKs best kept secret and lets keep it that way. We have enough people coming from London and pushing up our house prices already. Don't need any more thank you.

CarpetKnees · 10/07/2025 22:35

YABVU and also goady and plain rude.

Why aren't you answering the questions people have asked, to try and understand how you have got this misinformation you are spreading?

Did you mean that your son was the only person in his class whose first language was English? In posh Solihull? I don't believe you.

User37482 · 10/07/2025 22:38

Manchester is worse but yeah I had family move out of Birmingham because it’s just got worse. I have family still there but they live in the very nice parts.

hyggetyggedotorg · 10/07/2025 22:38

Gees. It’s a major city. Of course there are dodgy parts but there are many more safe parts.

DH is a Brummie. I come from a town 20 miles away which is much “nicer” but there are still loads of places in Birmingham I would like to live.

minnienono · 10/07/2025 22:40

Birmingham is nice, yes there’s rough bits but all
cities have them (never get lost in the Paris suburbs!)

ninjahamster · 10/07/2025 22:41

I live in Warwickshire and Brum is my nearest city. We really like it. Great curry houses, good shopping, fantastic jewellery quarter. Good concert venues. Airport, stations, trams. A fabulous university (ies). Grammar schools and other interesting schools like BOA. Central so easy to access most parts of the country. People are so lovely there too!

Which bit of Solihull.... The north?

Brums lovely.

Blinky21 · 10/07/2025 23:09

Ir has great suburbs, i moved from London to South Birmingham and love the independent shops, bars and restaurants. I am also really proud to live in such a diverse city, I have neighbours from Africa, Portugal, Greece and India and our street is super friendly

DY10DY11 · 11/07/2025 13:03

@LaudCodec what did your C mean?

itsonlyjoan · 11/07/2025 13:25

I live in handsworth birmingham:)

Trustyourinnervision · 11/07/2025 16:10

I sat in Brindley Place on a deckchair watching Wimbledon on the big screen ahead of ELO last Saturday, was lovely by the canals. DP is a Brummie so I’ve visited many of the suburbs and honestly same as most places it’s a mix. Crystal Palace girl originally and still adore the area when visiting whereas many wouldn’t see what I see!

Ha, no I didn’t live in The wood. I lived in a (formerly) nice part (south)
