To think people who drive electric cars give off a bit of a smug glow?

I’m all for greener choices but there’s something about the way some EV drivers talk about it, like they’ve reached moral enlightenment while the rest of us are choking the planet one traffic jam at a time.

AIBU to think it’s less about the car and more about the vibe?

I think they did when it was unusual. But, not anymore now it is ubiquitous.

rockstuckhardplace · 09/07/2025 10:25

I have an EV. I'm not glowing. I reserve that both literally and metaphorically for when I cycle.

I don't think of EVs as particularly green to be honest. I take personal satisfaction in a reduced pence per mile journey cost but that's just something I sometimes just bore my husband with.

It's just a car choice like any other. If you have to drive, keeping a car going as long as possible is the most environmental choice.

LoveSandbanks · 09/07/2025 10:39

I have an ev van. There’s nothing to be smug about a range of around a hundred miles. I can’t wait to get rid of the damn thing. I’m just glad it’s on a lease!

Seeline · 09/07/2025 10:42

Of the people I know who have electric cars (even hybrids) none of them actually like the car!
Maybe it's not a smug glow but a red rage you're seeing?

RepoTheGeriatricOpera · 09/07/2025 10:44

I walk everywhere or use public transport, what you're seeing isn't a smug glow for being eco friendly, it's just me being sweaty.

BallerinaRadio · 09/07/2025 10:45

I have never heard an EV driver talk like that. There's that many about these days they're just another car on the road now

onehorserace · 09/07/2025 10:45

There's not a smug glow when they pay for another set of tyres due to the weight of the car.

garlicktoms · 09/07/2025 10:46

Lol, most people I know with electric cars give off the glow of frustration and annoyance, they never seem to stop moaning about their electric cars!

Snorlaxo · 09/07/2025 10:46

We all know how batteries are made so the green credentials are dodgy at best.

Rosesanddaffs · 09/07/2025 10:47

@MyNavyDreamer I’m definitely not glowing, my face looks like a slapped arse, but that’s just my natural look xx

Surelythistime · 09/07/2025 10:47

I’ve never heard an EV driver talk about being environmental. We mostly are all thrilled by our fuel savings there’s no denying that so maybe that’s it?

Disclaimer you won’t make many savings if you don’t have a home charger.

Jawdrop · 09/07/2025 10:49

I think this 'smug glow' bears about as much relationship to reality as those fictional vegans who are always going around telling everyone they are vegan and guilt-tripping people ordering cow milk lattes.

MyCyanReader · 09/07/2025 10:55

Not really. Most EV drivers I know usually mention the cost per mile rather than any smug element.

I'm almost tempted to get one but not ready for a car change yet.

KaleQueen · 09/07/2025 11:06

You’re projecting. I have an EV and I bloody love how quiet it is and that it’s cheap and chips to drive (£11 a month 😱 vs £120 in petrol) and it’s packed with tech that blows my mind and keeps me safe and helps me park. And it looks fab. And it’s a lease car too so I don’t even have to worry about that imaginary tyre fix I’m going to have to do because (*checks thread) it’s ’too heavy’ 😂 I’m happy. But not smug. People can be happy in their choices without being ‘smug’

I don't know why you are mocking my post about the tyres. It's an industry acknowledged issue due to a variety of issues.

Same here. The only thing I ever say about my electric car is how much easier it’s made my life, and I only do that if someone asks me about it. Some people seem to view anyone doing something differently to them as some kind of attack on their choices. I don’t see myself as superior for choosing anything that’s more convenient for me, pure projection.

HarrietteVane · 09/07/2025 11:12

Aren't a lot of people quite happy / smug about their choice of car? Otherwise why would car brands bother to position themselves as different from the others?

Look at most folks with a new Audi / Range Rover etc etc

I do love my electric car but unless asked I only talk about how much I love it with other electric car drivers!

The shameful secret of enjoying your EV! 😂

GasPanic · 09/07/2025 11:22

I have a hybrid. When you drive it on electric its pretty good and obviously saves quite a bit of cash.

Electrics are just nice cars to drive and cheap to run (but expensive to buy).

There's more to them than just greenery.

Brightonbelly · 09/07/2025 11:23

I don’t think I ever mention it unless someone asks about how it is - and my answer is cheap to run!

lifeisgoodrightnow · 09/07/2025 11:25

Mine costs me £5.39 for 300 miles of driving, is packed with tech, does 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. Yeah I’m smug :-) ! Love it!

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 09/07/2025 11:28

I’ve had an ev for about a year now…can’t say I feel in any way smug about it.
I bloody love it, but that’s because it’s been my dream car for a couple of years, and it’s so easy to drive because it’s automatic.
I’m really happy with it, but that’s as far as my thoughts and feelings go.

Never heard this issue and we've had ours almost 4 years now🤷‍♂️

Does it get negated if you’re not a very heavy driver?
