Neighbour has put political banner on his fence

IonaJ · 08/07/2025 20:52

Our neighbour’s house has a fence which faces a fairly busy road. He has taken it upon himself to tie a political banner (think ‘vote X’) to that fence.

Before anyone says it, yes I know it’s his property. But said party are divisive and I worry there may be some unwarranted attention as a result.

Do you think we would be unreasonable to politely suggest it is taken down, or to compromise, only put there during election periods?

You’ve lost me..why wouldn’t I have been?

You lost me with your snidey post about people in social housing.

I hate Reform, but I hate snobs just as much.

PandoraSocks · 08/07/2025 22:56

Given that Reform keep losing MPs, the banner will probably out live the party.

I agree.

You could do the same job with a nice subtle piece of artwork. EU flag? Doves and other lovely symbols?

I’d to tempted to put a big FUCK OFF FARAGE sign but possibly I shouldn’t be allowed to.

Our neighbour opposite put up a reform poster during the recent council elections. Our 14 year old DGS then put an EU flag up in his window. Neighbour retaliated by putting up a second bigger poster. Both are still up but we took down EU flag after the elections.

290 MPs if the election happened now apparently.

Is OP one of the 'we want more social housing but not near me' Labour supporters

CurlewCelia · 08/07/2025 23:01

I don’t get my news from GB News.

IonaJ · 08/07/2025 23:03

I wasn’t intending for this to turn into a thread bashing various political parties, more so if I was being unreasonable to approach our neighbour. I think im going to need to see if it’s still up in a week or hope one of our more ‘direct’ neighbours has a word in the meantime!

Tis true I'm afraid

I know you want a Reform government, but I think you will be disappointed.

  1. Reform are only two points ahead of Plaid in Wales and have nowhere near the numbers to have a majority under the PR system, even if they went into coalition with the Tories.
  2. Reform will get its arse spanked in London next year.

3 Reform has lost a third of its Westminster MPs within the space of a year.

Why? The majority of people have said you're being unreasonable to ask it come down.

You've done one of those AIBU threads where nearly everyone says YES but you decide you aren't. Why did you ask? It's 89% YABU at the moment.

I think it is the equivalent of wearing a MAGA hat in the USA. It speaks of who you are rather than just supporting a political party so I would dispute his politics are just a small part of his personality as a PP says. He wants to be identified as a Reform voter with all the connotations which go along with that.

On that note I would like to be told one good policy of Farages which is not stop the boats or get rid of immigration which is all friends of mine could tell me the other day. When I pointed out that Farage and his cronies voted against the employment rights bill, deny climate change and seem to want to privatise the NHS through the back door they knew nothing about that.

Have you read their manifesto?

IdaGlossop · 08/07/2025 23:15

'If' is the most important word in that sentence.

Your analysis runs counter to every poll and polling trend for the last 6 months. Bookies have it as 7/5 for reform and 8/5 for Labour having the most seats in the next General election, you should put a bet on,

Waiting for a neighbour to do your dirty work now. If your neighbours have zny sense, they'll keep their mouths shut. Your neighbour has every right to display a Reform poster on his property. You have every right not to like it.

If a neighbour of mine complained about me putting up a party political poster on my own property, I'd happily live in the dark for a year as the price to pay for covering every inch of window with the same poster.

Ah, so the polls are all wrong and you're right. Thanks for clearing that up.

Where/when did I say I wanted a Reform government btw??

Common on here. If you dare say to people to stop scoffing at Reform and Reform voters and to stop calling them thick and racist they assume you are a Reform supporter.

Whereas it’s entirely possible that you’re terrified of the thought of a Reform govt and think the best way to stop that from happening is to actually understand why they’ve become so popular and to take it very seriously.

CanSeeClearlyNowTheRainHasGone · 08/07/2025 23:25

IonaJ · 08/07/2025 21:15

Probably the latter as the main concern if I’m honest. I would like to think we live somewhere affluent enough to not attract those who’d cause damage etc, and whilst we do have some social housing nearby in one of the new build areas, I think they are more likely to be in favour of the sign!

There's a really nasty subtext to your post.

Which is "we're rich and virtuous, and believe that the concerns of poorer people which seem to be ignored by most other parties, can just be hidden from view"

It's self-righteous in a way that I normally only see on the pages of the Graun

DiscoBob · 08/07/2025 23:27

CheekyFish · 08/07/2025 22:45

OP is a little worried about the flag attracting people from the nearby social housing, they like to stand near it and be racist on warm evenings.

Edited

Haha. It's encouraging gangs of rampant racists to worship beneath it wearing KKK costumes?
That sounds like maybe she should contact the council. 🤣

IdaGlossop · 08/07/2025 23:27

CheekyFish · 08/07/2025 23:22

True - but voting behaviour in actual elections when predictions are done this far ahead of a general election doesn't tend to follow the predictions. In this case, many people like the sound of Reform now but whether they'll transfer their vote to Reform in 2029, even if a Reform candidate is standing in their constituency, is a different matter.

GE voting intention is more relevant than the points below anyway.
