Neighbour has put political banner on his fence

Our neighbour’s house has a fence which faces a fairly busy road. He has taken it upon himself to tie a political banner (think ‘vote X’) to that fence.

Before anyone says it, yes I know it’s his property. But said party are divisive and I worry there may be some unwarranted attention as a result.

Do you think we would be unreasonable to politely suggest it is taken down, or to compromise, only put there during election periods?

Are you serious?

If there is any comeback it’s on him - not the neighbours!

I think you should stay in your lane on this one.

FOJN · 08/07/2025 20:56

"Unwarranted attention"? What do you mean and who from?

Unless he's supporting something illegal then I think you should mind your own business.

TheNuthatch · 08/07/2025 20:57

Is it a Reform banner?

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 08/07/2025 20:58

As long as people don't start on him/ throw bricks at his window or worse.. I'd leave it be... but if something does happen like that.. then inform the police.. happened on my friends street.. her neighbour put up a " Reform" banner.. bricks were thrown at the window... that affected her small children.. they became very frightened.

Jabberwok · 08/07/2025 21:00

Why does it concern you?

IonaJ · 08/07/2025 21:00

Yes it’s a Reform banner. Each to their own in terms of politics, but being the first thing you see when turning in to our street is not great. I feel sorry for any residents who are thinking about selling their house soon.

Are you serious? Obviously Rachel Reeves hasn’t hiked taxes enough if that’s all you have to worry about.

takealettermsjones · 08/07/2025 21:01

Put a bigger banner up saying "DON'T VOTE X."

user1476613140 · 08/07/2025 21:04

Anyone turning into your street will think you're all a bunch of C u Next Tuesdays.

I would be doing exactly this, I don’t want to be guilty by association 😂 I imagine the neighbour war of the century would ensue though.

Thelostjewels · 08/07/2025 21:04

I was going to say is it a labour banner, they are extremely divisive these days aren't they and that banner could attract many angry people

Thelostjewels · 08/07/2025 21:06

@ItsFridayIminLoveJS i wonder which peaceful party the brick throwers belonged too ,usually brick throwing is a momentum tactic of the far left

FumingTRex · 08/07/2025 21:06

He may need planning permission depending on the size, you could report to the council if its big.

You don't need to feel sorry for residents who want to sell their homes. Reform are the most popular party in England and Wales rn, so the banner may help to boost interest.

Londonrach1 · 08/07/2025 21:08

Growing up one neighbour had vote conservative on their fence and next door had vote labour....every Sunday those two neighbours had Sunday lunch together for 20 plus years.. the best of friends...sadly we lost the vote labour one first then the vote conservative one but as a teenager and young adult I loved seeing both posters and knowing that deep down it didn't matter what they voted they still have Sunday roast on Sunday together...yabu by the way.

You could do the same job with a nice subtle piece of artwork. EU flag? Doves and other lovely symbols?

I’d to tempted to put a big FUCK OFF FARAGE sign but possibly I shouldn’t be allowed to.

Tbh I would hate that because of the connotations associated with reform and how it might make other people either living or visiting the area feel uncomfortable so for that reason I would report it anonymously to the local council but realistically if he owns the house I'm not sure there's much you can do.

I'd second an F off farage poster as well.

Being completely honest, are you worried about his house attracting negative attention? Or are you worried about it lowering the tone of the neighbourhood?

I’m not a fan of political signs and I’d rather not vote at all than vote Reform, but I’m very much against people feeling like they have to hide their support of a legal political party in case someone threatens them, their home or their family. That behaviour cannot be allowed to happen.

Probably the latter as the main concern if I’m honest. I would like to think we live somewhere affluent enough to not attract those who’d cause damage etc, and whilst we do have some social housing nearby in one of the new build areas, I think they are more likely to be in favour of the sign!

Only if they’re really, really stupid.

MsJemimaPuddleDuck · 08/07/2025 21:19

I’d put a big sign up of what mindless policies & beliefs Reform have :)

OP, we must educate the uneducated afterall.

Are you being serious? I mean, I know that tone and sarcasm is sometimes difficult to pick up on, particularly if someone has a very dry sense of humour, but I’m thinking you must be joking here. Please tell me you’re not being serious?

Why?

are you/people really so thick as to think one persons banner reflects the feelings of everyone on the street??

@IonaJ I suppose you could see if there are any restrictions on banners in your area, but other than that I don't see what you can do. I'd be really pissed off to whether it was for reform or slimming world!

You lost me here. It's not big or clever to stereotype people who live in social housing.
