Driving up the M6 today and stopped for a comfort break at Lancaster services. We've never stopped at this service station so never noticed this tower before but AIBU to think there's something creepy about it?

I think brutalism looks great in a very green leafy environment, I think it’s called eco-brutalism? It looks futuristic to me, like a utopian society with new technology that’s been born out of old abandoned buildings maybe from a post-apocalyptic world?

anyway enough of my insane brain, this is what I mean: https://jayscotts.com/blog/brutalism-with-plants/

Yes, you get it.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 08/07/2025 22:07

I know people who actually go to do their food shopping at Gloucester Services.

To me the greenery makes it creepy.

Ah yes, many fond memories of being groped while waiting for a bus in Preston Bus Station in the 70s, aged 10

i don’t want to ignore this. I’m sorry that happened to you as a child. 💙

I dislike most towers and some are plain sinister. Many years ago came across the Yser Tower whilst travelling through Belgium. Now used as a museum but it gave me the heebie jeebies so was only in there about 15 minutes

To think this tower is creepy?

Lancaster Services are shit. Rebates is much nicer and only just up the M6.

Agreed.

Yabu for going to Lancaster services. Utter shite every single time I've ever had the misfortune to visit en route to family.

I know what you mean, almost too much greenery.

@ChopsySue I'm thinking more of the Alexandra Road Estate in Camden or The Barbican -i have always been fascinated by them.

And now there seem to be people who treat Tebay and Gloucester services as though they’re ‘destinations’ … usually crowded IME and bloody annoying if what you really need to pep you up is a Diet Coke.😂

They sell Diet Coke (and normal chocolate like Dairy Milk) in the petrol station Errol.

Thanks for caring @WarmMJ. Sadly back then I knew there would be no point reporting it as no one really cared. All I could do was turn round and thump them. They didn’t expect that from a skinny little girl! I tried to shrug it off then but, looking back, it really was pretty awful and has affected me. I feel like I have spent my whole life fighting.

Looks a bit like one of those big mushroom dudes from Mario.

PregnantBarbie · 09/07/2025 00:47

I think these near our plant are freakier. Look like some War of the Worlds invasion going on.

We love it! Reminds me of the last services stop we had before we reached our wedding venue! We always make a point of stopping here when on this part of the M6 and as it happens, only a week and a half to go and we'll be there again!

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 09/07/2025 03:14

@DontCallMeBaby those pictures are fantastic ❤️

WiddlinDiddlin · 09/07/2025 03:34

I have a sort of soft spot for brutalism - sort of as I realise its only there because my parents subjected me to some very boring holidays in Bulgaria at the end of the 80s/v early 90s, my dad worked in a huge brutalist office block, as a chief architect and really made sure to point it brutalist examples, ironically because he HATED it (he was at wherever they hatch out new architects and planners in the early 70s, doing first am architecture qual then a town planning/landscaping one, I think Leeds and then Birmingham)... and then he went to work for Redditch council which I doubt helped much.

I associate such buildings with fag smelling offices with orange/brown carpets and lots of coloured pencils and fun magnets to play with and palm trees in pots that smelly faintly of overdone coffee poured into them. Happy days.

Forton Services 'space ship tower' as we called it, meant 'going to the lake district' and usually stopping there as I was about to be sick.

Zellycat · 09/07/2025 03:39

Yes agree! We try to imagine what it was like when new (and clean) - a modern marvel of motorway dining.

What are you on about?

What a dickish response.

LancashireButterPie · 09/07/2025 04:36

AHH, the nearly home tower!

InMySpareTime · 09/07/2025 06:03

When I watched Men In Black I thought of Lancaster Services when the cockroach was climbing the World Expo towers.

Creepy, no. Brutal, yes.

It's more the fact that it's abandoned that gives me the creeps. Not the architecture. Abandoned or inaccessible places give me nightmares.

@Ukholidaysaregreat well of course I had to! Eeeek yes just what I envisaged! A dystopian future where all manner of giant structures will feel compelled to turn on us haha

There is a Stephen King novel where dull and mundane machines come alive and start hunting people. Loved it!

That’s terrible. But what a sparky little ten-year-old you were to fight back! You should never have been put in that position. I’m so sorry your life has continued to be a struggle. Have you had any help as an adult to deal with what happened?
