Driving up the M6 today and stopped for a comfort break at Lancaster services. We've never stopped at this service station so never noticed this tower before but AIBU to think there's something creepy about it?

Hope you went/will go to visit Tebay ?

Throwmoneyatit · 08/07/2025 19:02

I love it 🤣 only because I use the next exit and it signals to us that we're nearly home!
I've always wanted to go up and have a look around though. It used to be used as a dance hall back in the 70s I think...

LaudCodec · 08/07/2025 19:06

It’s Grade 2 listed isn’t it? The service station that is.

TaborlinTheGreat · 08/07/2025 16:51

Rebates? Do you mean Tebay?

Creepy, OP? No. Ugly? Hell yes! It's near where I live.

I absolutely love Tebay services, I could (and have) spent a fortune there in the past.
I bought loads of Fentimans Botanical drinks and patisserie etc.
That old diesel fiesta went all over the bloody country!

when the M6 first opened people used to take a drive out just to visit a service station. I pass Forton often . I would love to open a themed restaurant in that building. Such a waste 🙁

And now there seem to be people who treat Tebay and Gloucester services as though they’re ‘destinations’ … usually crowded IME and bloody annoying if what you really need to pep you up is a Diet Coke.😂

reservoirdawg · 08/07/2025 19:30

What do you think of this?
Also happy sigh Tebay. Top tip the petrol station has the same coffee a pound cheaper and an excellent curated selection from the main shop if it’s all a bit overwhelming.

This is the bus station, I find it creepy

Ah yes, many fond memories of being groped while waiting for a bus in Preston Bus Station in the 70s, aged 10

Itiswhysofew · 08/07/2025 19:41

Creepy, no. Brutal, yes.

I absolutely love those Soviet style buildings and that's when I learned that I love that style of architecture. I know they seem imposing but they scream functionality to me even though the lifts don't work in most of them and haven't done for decades probably.

I think brutalism looks great in a very green leafy environment, I think it’s called eco-brutalism? It looks futuristic to me, like a utopian society with new technology that’s been born out of old abandoned buildings maybe from a post-apocalyptic world?

anyway enough of my insane brain, this is what I mean: https://jayscotts.com/blog/brutalism-with-plants/

@ChopsySue it works well in lush tropics.
This is a Geoffrey Bawra hotel in Sri Lanka

Nope we kept going until over the border. Have to say, it looks amazing. Knew nothing about it, other than hearing a friend years ago describe it as 'crap'. Wish I hadnt listened to them!

I love brutalism. And I love wind turbines. I was on a cruise in February, and the highlight was sailing past a huge offshore wind farm. Stunning!

I also have a book of Soviet bus stops and live in an ugly 70s house.

Ooh I love that. I can’t tell if that was on purpose or by accident but either way it looks cool

If I was to write a sort of sci-fi futurist novel, it’d be set in a world with eco-brutalism (brutalism in a leafy environment) and lots of huge white wind turbines!

Jennyathemall · 08/07/2025 20:03

You never noticed it before? It’s rather prominent. Or do you drive along the motorway with your eyes closed?

You're assuming I drive this way a lot. Or that I'm the one driving and hence need to have my eyes open

That’s the nearly home church surely?!

See if you can get hold of the short story ‘The Pennine Tower Restaurant’ by Simon Kurt Unsworth @WhichOneIsPosher . It begins “This is not fiction” and you almost, almost believe it isn’t……

CocoPops39616 · 08/07/2025 20:41

Does it remind you of the new Final Destination movie maybe?

I've not watched it or saw any trailers but I'm intrigued!

I find it rather fugly, and I'm surprised so many people like brutalist architecture, but I guess that explains why there are so many ugly buildings...

Lonelycrab · 08/07/2025 21:11

It definitely has something of the Sith about it.

Caerulea · 08/07/2025 21:32

Ahhh I had forgotten about this place! We drove past it once & I was immediately on my phone finding out what it was. I was gutted to find it was no longer in use else I'd have turned the car around.

I'm a big fan of brutalism when it's absurd or fantastical, like this.
