To think this tower is creepy?

Driving up the M6 today and stopped for a comfort break at Lancaster services. We've never stopped at this service station so never noticed this tower before but AIBU to think there's something creepy about it?

Did you see the new final destination movie? You should go on YouTube and see if you can find trailers of the building and what happens to it

BorneBackCeaselesslyIntoThePas · 08/07/2025 17:10

If you are a fan of Brutalist architecture, then you’d have loved Fawley power station near London (image attached). It’s gone now, but the resemblance to a downed flying saucer was impressive, and like most power stations most of the time there was about three people in the whole place .

I thought this appeared in one of the Doctor Who films, but IMDb says it was a Mission Impossible

I find all wind turbines creepy. I feel really peculiar whenever driving past them and if I was ever up close and personal to one I honestly think I’d faint - daft as that sounds! 😅

CountryQueen · 08/07/2025 17:16

Forton Services. You might as well grab a too good to go bag while you’re there OP

This is the bus station, I find it creepy

I think that's rather beautiful.

Fairyliz · 08/07/2025 17:33

It looks like the sort of place you would avoid after sunset because that’s when the undead would start coming out.

Edited

OMG I thought I was the only one, so I have rarely said it to anyone!

I was in Ireland on holiday last year and there is a road in Wexford that has wind turbines in the fields alongside (probably miles away but they looked as if I could touch them). I thought I'd never get to the end of that road. I get a funny feeling at the top of my head. I think I might need serious help here, but am glad in a way I'm not alone 😊

It might be a touch of megalophobia you are feeling, and it's not uncommon.

Wheezygonzalez · 08/07/2025 17:53

I hate brutalist architecture (it all looks like multi-storey car parks to me) and couldn’t see what you meant at first but I’m starting to get it.

It’s like something out of Pripriat, or any of those bleak looking Soviet towns. Gives off abandoned vibes which I do find creepy.

We stopped at Forton services last year and that's what I said to DH, its like something from 70s Soviet Russia, you can practically feel the building crumbling around you. The toilets and Burger King were absolutely filthy too.

I absolutely love those Soviet style buildings and that's when I learned that I love that style of architecture. I know they seem imposing but they scream functionality to me even though the lifts don't work in most of them and haven't done for decades probably.

Jamesblonde2 · 08/07/2025 17:58

Yes looks like awful brutalist architecture.

Hey fellow weirdo! 😅 I was in two minds whether to even post on here lol as I realise many people find them eyesores but I find them more than that, like quite terrifying though I’m not sure why. I fantasise they’re secretly robots doubling as turbines and then at some point they’ll be switched on and they’ll hunt us down! 🤣

Oo! If so you should check out siren head videos on YouTube. Or not. Haha.

LittlleMy · 08/07/2025 18:15

@Ukholidaysaregreat well of course I had to! Eeeek yes just what I envisaged! A dystopian future where all manner of giant structures will feel compelled to turn on us haha

I think it used to have a Wimpy inside it.

YABU for not noticing that when driving past previously. It is hideous though and needs a jet wash or a bulldozer. Maybe both.

It looked better before they repainted it a few years ago. It used to have bands of a quite nice teal colour, they did it all a dirty dingy cream which seems to be mouldering and peeling.

It is a weird design though - maybe quite interesting as a structure I suppose.

we sometimes stop at Forton if DH needs the loo or to pick up an M&S sandwich - it’s adequate for those purposes.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/07/2025 18:26

I seem to remember Preston council wanted to demolish the bus station to redevelop the area but can’t because it’s a listed building. Who gets to decide such things?

Number456 · 08/07/2025 18:34

I find loads of Brutalist architecture gives me a physical reaction. There are some halls of residence, which might have been demolished by now, at the university of east anglia that give me a chill. And the bit of the Barbican with the plants. 😱

But then other things I don’t mind at all.

nocoolnamesleft · 08/07/2025 18:36

Great architecture, crap service station. Try to hold out for Tebay.

Needmorelego · 08/07/2025 18:41

@WhichOneIsPosher ooooh I am so going to find that on Google Earth.
I have a whole love/hate/general bafflement with brutalist architecture.
Futuristic but dated at the same time 😂

sandgrown · 08/07/2025 18:48

when the M6 first opened people used to take a drive out just to visit a service station. I pass Forton often . I would love to open a themed restaurant in that building. Such a waste 🙁

WarmMJ · 08/07/2025 18:50

I love it. I'd love to wander about in the deserted interior. It looks quite welcoming in its heyday, OP (screenshot).

I have to limit my YouTube access to places like Pripriat, absolutely addictive.

InterIgnis · 08/07/2025 18:52

If anyone is a fan of brutalist architecture then I’d recommend looking up examples of it in the former Yugoslavia, particularly Spomenik/Spomeniki.

Needmorelego · 08/07/2025 18:53

I just googled it.
Apparently the reason the tower isn't used is due to fire regulations (only one way in and out).
I wonder if it could be changed and reopened?

Where it comes to bus and coach stations, you're not far wrong.
