To be sick of hearing about the post office scandal?

Yes I know it’s a huge deal and what happened was awful but ffs it’s on the news everytime I turn it on. Yes it was absolutely big news at the time but do we really need to keep hearing about it daily for so long? It only affects those involved, surely? Just give us an update when the inquiry is finished!

Is that you Paula?

It’s gotta be😂

Cornal · 08/07/2025 13:17

I’m not involved but it affected me very much when I saw the account on breakfast news of a wrongly accused woman who’d been spat at coming out of a shop in her small village.

During my GCSE years I had a Saturday job in a newsagents/post office. Way before horizon. One of the women who worked there was convicted of fraud and sent to prison. It absolutely tore the postmaster apart, he’d trusted her implicitly for years, he was a wonderful man. Not long after he became ill and died. So I’ve seen the effects that this kind of stress can have on people.

MightyDandelionEsq · 08/07/2025 13:23

Yes. People went to prison and some killed themselves due to a faulty IT system provided by a gov contractor who is still getting billions of contracts to this day. It’s a national scandal.

CustardySergeant · 08/07/2025 13:25

I'm watching one of the affected Post Office workers being interviewed on BBC news at the moment and one woman said she is still - as in yesterday - being accused of stealing from the PO! A customer said to her "Did you put that in the till or did you put it in your pocket?". 😡

Brefugee · 08/07/2025 13:27

well, OP, let's hope you are never the victim of institutional injustice and the government dragging its feet over compensating you, eh?

friendlycat · 08/07/2025 13:29

I’m actually shocked that you can write this post.

ginasevern · 08/07/2025 13:30

OP, you missed your vocation. You would've been eminently suitable for a higher management position overseeing Horizon. They were a callous, self serving bunch of cunts by the way.

BishBashBoomer · 08/07/2025 13:30

So very unreasonable. Talk about privilege.

People went to prison or received criminal records for crimes they did not commit, people killed themselves because it did so much damage to theirs and their families lives and livelihoods and they are still awaiting the compensation that could help them to rebuild the damage caused. Sorry you find it boring, but, oh well.

This. ^ Yes it is on TV quite often @Owt but it was a COLOSSAL miscarriage of justice. Just horrific. Lives were destroyed beyond recognition, careers and livelihoods were wrecked, a few people took their own life, and families and marriages were fractured, or completely destroyed.

Also, some people suffered nervous breakdowns and chronic and long term mental health problems, because of the horrific stress caused by the LIES told about them, the accusations of theft, the fact they ended up with a criminal record and/or a jail sentence for something they didn't do, and of course - the public shame.

Oh, and the majority of them have received little - or NO compensation. There were nearly 1000 of them!

Please. PLEASE have some empathy. 🙏

And here we have the issue with the modern world. Me, me, me.

Hanovercrosse · 08/07/2025 13:36

As the child of someone affected I suggest you shut the fuck up

I suspect this is just goady bollocks

cloudyblueglass · 08/07/2025 13:37

Peoples lives were utterly destroyed. Good. Decent. People.

people are dead.

peoles marriages have been destroyed
peopld left with mental health issues leaving them debilitated and unable to fully participate in life.

Your moaning is utterly utterly selfish and tone deaf and disgusting

Really sorry your family were put through this.

Travesty is Fujitsu haven’t paid for what they did - still raking in contracts.

Royal Mail haven’t - they were privatised.

Government haven’t - swept under rug.

Awful for you and your family x

A terrible injustice was allowed to happen. It destroyed lives and continues to play out for the families affected. They can’t just switch off and forget about it can they?

Coverage is welcome, especially if it helps prevent something similar in the future.

PutThe · 08/07/2025 13:53

Anyone who needs a purely self interested reason to care, the way in which this is still being dragged out is potentially relevant to all of us. Miscarriages of justice happen. None of us are immune from being affected by one in the future. It's therefore a good thing for everyone if we can have institutions that are capable not only of identifying them, but also remedying them in a timely fashion. That includes appropriate compensation.

Because we currently don't have that, all of us are worse off, regardless of whether we have any personal connection with this particular scandal.

PiggyPigalle · 08/07/2025 13:54

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/07/2025 12:12

I'm sure those who were wrongly accused aren't sick of hearing about it and I feel for them deeply, but I'm also quite concerned that some who really were stealing will never be challenged because of the broad-brush "amnesty"

Ditto those in my local place within a Premier Supermarket, where very little is put through the till, countless parcels mysteriously "disappear" and - knowing they're practically untouchable - they run the place mainly as a drug shop

It wouldn't be so bad except they're not even discreet about it and there are folk walking out pocketing wraps of this and that at all times of day Hmm

It was in the news at the time, it shocked me how few knew about it until after the dramatised version was on television.
Yes, a terrible thing for those wrongly accused, but there is a huge flaw as @Puzzledandpissedoff has alluded to, especially the second wave.
I doubt it would ever be addressed as it's too sensitive.

The PTB haven't even prosecuted most from Covid times.

No we don't.

Hanovercrosse · 08/07/2025 14:10

I don’t want to say too much as I don’t want to out myself but my parents had their shop for over 30 years before the scandal. They’re elderly now but the accusations and suspicions will never leave them.

Cattery · 08/07/2025 14:11

Nevertrustacop · 08/07/2025 12:19

One young man pleaded guilty to all crimes because the family knew his elderly mother who was actually the one one making the 'errors' would not be able to manage prison time. So he went instead.

I didn’t know that. That’s really sad. I obviously had no idea about what was happening re their software systems at the time but I remember asking where the chap who ran our local small post office (within his shop) had gone as I hadn’t seen him for ages. Someone told me he’d been “caught with his fingers in the till”. I wonder now if he was caught up in this shit show x

SwearyYellowStartish · 08/07/2025 14:23

In a crowded field of awful opinions this one is right up there with the worst.

rainbowunicorn · 08/07/2025 14:23

Maybe if you had actually listened to or read one of the numerous reports that you claim to be seeing eveytime you turn on the tv you would have a slight understanding of what these people went through and are still going through.
This is one of the most ill informed, uneducated posts I have ever seen on here and that really is saying something.

Redglitter · 08/07/2025 14:26

Surprise surprise the OP hasnt come back. Hopefully that means this is a disgusting goady thread as opposed to someone being so breathtakingly ignorant
