Another testing of National Alert

MollyButton · 08/07/2025 00:00

AIBU to ask if people are aware: Apparently there is another test of the national Alert system happening in September. It’s crucial that people are aware it will happen especially those with some disabilities or in DV situations.

I'd down a bottle of vodka

I’d get my knickers off quick, and whoever was next to me would either think oh no or what a way to go. 😀

I will be turning my phone off and storing it in a metal box. I have no intention of participating in state control.

Do you mean a tinfoil box?

alexalisten · 08/07/2025 20:36

Can't believe I read that whole article and not one mention of heatstroke

I KNOW right? But it proves that what i said on another thread is right. Someone HAS to get heat stroke and possibly die of it first because there always has to be a death for there to be any change. Because THATS the way it works in the UK. Unpalatable but true! (see Awaabs Law) Thought prevention was better than cure to help our NHS Thats what im always seeing on here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😐

Im not googling anything further just for you to be proven wrong. You need to take personal responsibility for yourself as an adult its not for the government to stop you getting sunstroke. Also can you please stop making me stick up for kier starmer I dont like it.

That's the way it works anywhere. It's not possible 1 in 100,000,000 local death warning. It possible mass casualties warning.
Quite frankly there are enough warnings about heat in UK it fucking laughable. Yet still people don't listrn (nor do they in places where it's more common).
They also don't issue alarms for 70mph winds...

Alams are for unexpected things which can cause mass casualty or massive damage. Simple

You know i was thinking of them "keeping us safe" today and it struck me that they are all for keeping us safe.............when it doesnt cost them anything. In the summer they are happy to take the risk of ppl getting heat stroke. Air con is treated like a dirty phrase in the UK
In the winter the pavements arent gritted when they are icy. I live opposite a school and watched a young child slip and smack his forehead on the pavement in December 2022 Oh yes all for keeping us safe when it doesnt cost anything.

I think the emergency alert is intended for perils that can't be addressed solely by people wearing suitable clothes/footwear and using their common sense.

I do have enough sleeping tablets to kill a T-Rex.

Hope you live near the supermarket, that's where the T-Rex is!

I just now imagine t-rex fighting the tablets like a dog does

Cynic17 · 08/07/2025 07:59

Not a bad idea! The whole idea of this "alert" is just performative nonsense. As if anybody is interested!

Oh well, maybe they will stop testing it because you think it is "just performative nonsense" and then when an alert is actually required because of flooding, fire, a gas leak etc. and it doesn't work you can step up and take the blame.

A nearby town to me tests their tsunami alarm once a month, I guess that's "just performative nonsense" too.

Man, there are some weirdos out there.

SouthernNights59 · 08/07/2025 23:10

What my phone never did was make an obnoxious or unusual noise, it was just a message on my lock screen in both countries. IDK why the UK one has to be different and I'm in two minds about it because obviously in a major disaster we'd probably want the noise to alert us quickly but that's not how other countries operate.

It might not be how some other countries operate, but I can assure you that in some it does make a loud noise, it's not just the UK. What on earth is the use of just a message on your lock screen in a major disaster, not everyone is constantly checking their phone.

Hendil · 08/07/2025 23:12

I don't know what us without smartphones are going to do if it's a major disaster then.

DoraSpenlow · 08/07/2025 23:37

When we were visiting the US we had an alert asking people to look for a vehicle which had been used in a child abduction. I thought that was an excellent use of the system.

Oh dont worry I WILL be wearing suitable clothes on the 16th just as i am now in my sauna of a flat. T shirt and knickers. Whats happening on the16th you say? Contractors are coming. But like y"all said Up to us to take personal responsibility and dress appropriately for the weather!!!

No need for the box, you could put it under your tin foil hat.

Or take a hammer to the phone to smash it.

That would be great providing there’s no sound. I don’t want to be woken up in the middle of the night for something I can do nothing about.

Perhaps there could be different levels that you can opt in or out of. Most serious text and sound, others text only. I still believe there should be a complete opt out option so people with second phones will be safe. Despite one poster thinking it’s a ‘niche situation’ some DV victims would need this additional support

Hendil · 08/07/2025 23:12

I don't know what us without smartphones are going to do if it's a major disaster then.

If it's a major disaster it'll also be on tv and radio, just as it always has. Sending alerts to smartphones is more important these days because fewer people listen to the radio or watch live tv.

JenniferBooth · 09/07/2025 13:26

ButteredRadish · 08/07/2025 17:23

Don’t be so ridiculous! It’s an alert not a software update. If your phone freezes then switch it off then on again 🙄

It was in the press at the time so please dont gaslight
