Wow. The Observer article is a great piece of investigative journalism.

How on earth did they not think the truth would
out, as it did when they stole £64k?

Perhaps this fits the psychological profile because most people don't behave as they do.

How they kept it a secret so long is interesting given how many people recognised them.

Wonder if Gillian Anderson will make a statement, was reading an interview of her and Winn together.

They possibly didn't realise what would happen when they the juggernaut of publicity for the film started rolling. They had reinvented themselves in another part of the country with new names but once they appeared on the telly they would have been recognised. If they had just kept their heads down they would have got away with it. Unfortunately for them most of the film publicity has been all about the authenticity of the story which required them to appear with the actors portraying them.

Also from the DM comments, I've deleted the names of his parents, but checked them out with public records and they are correct.

When they left in disgrace they had a chateaux in France and Tim’s parents rented a large property in Sarn Meillteyrn near the chapel . His father XXX Walker and wife XXX had plenty of room for them to stay. Not homeless. They were on the run!!
...
They lived here. They stole here, many people in the area are still owed money by them ! We don't need to search its local fact. His father always use to say how he was going to live with them in France and re do the chateaux with them . Until they left.
...
Everyone in Pen Llyn area of North Wales who know them as Sally and Tim Walker know that they are thief’s and frauds. They have concocted a pack of lies about their lives and have ruined lives in their wake. They are truly evil and nothing they say should be believed.

Blimey ! These are similar to the newphew's post on LinkedIn. There seems to be quite alot of people who knew them with the same opinion of them.

No, his parents rented a place in a village in Wales. It's a 25 minute drive from Pllwheli according to Google Earth.

Yes, Sarn Meyllteyrn is a village in Gwynedd, Wales, not France.

Well, yes, I get that, and have pre-ordered myself, but I was surprised at the idea that there would be significant numbers of pre-orders for RV's fourth book, especially as the general impression one has of her post-TSP work is that it's somewhat pallid attempts to regain whatever it was that made TSP so readable for its fans. (I only read part of the second book and thought it had all the hallmarks of someone trying to reduplicate the success of their debut.)

But I can entirely see that, even in relatively small numbers, it might make a difference to small regional bookshops who struggle to stay afloat at the best of times.

the general impression one has of her post-TSP work is that it's somewhat pallid attempts to regain whatever it was that made TSP so readable for its fans

This is going to sound a bit snobbish, but please be assured that it isn't. I think that people read is great, and don't care if it is Tolstoy or the back of the Cornflakes packet. But there is a large body of readers who "read the same book over and over", just with different characters. And many writers produce books on that basis. I am probably taking my life into my hands here, but take Georgette Heyer (I recall my mum reading all her books). She has a formula. Every book follows that formula (in my opinion) because people like the formula. I suspect that many readers of TSP like the formula, and will read more books that are similar to it. The majority of people do not have wide palates when it comes to reading.

Did anyone take a look at their house in Wales on the YT link to 'Escape To The Country'... it was beautiful. Rustic, tasteful and obviously pretty newly renovated. I'm guessing that's exactly where the 64k went. You don't get properties like that on a bookkeeper's salary.
What was Moth's profession before the 'downfall'?

Do you have the YT link sorry? Is it on this thread?

You're right, plus many books have a blurb that goes along the lines of...

"If you liked Jane Brown, you'll love this" or somesuch, to get a reader interested.

My association with that village is that it is home of the secretary of the Lleyn Sheep Society. I’m forever sending stuff there. As you were.

That's true I guess, if I were just reading the book I might not recognise them.

Like you say if they could have opted out of the publicity they might have gotten away with it. But I guess they had no.option.

It's not that staggering when you consider around 1 in 4 people in the UK have a disability. "16.1 million people in the UK had a disability in the 2022/23 financial year. This represents 24% of the total population."

https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-9602/

That 1 in 4 of the population are disabled seems an absolutely staggering figure which begs the question "How do we define disability?". The government say

"To measure disability based on this definition, survey respondents are asked whether they have a physical or mental health condition or illness that has lasted or is expected to last 12 months or more, and whether the condition and/or illness reduces their ability to carry out day-to-day activities. A person who answers yes to both questions is considered disabled."

If I answer that question then I'm disabled because I am short-sighted & have worn glasses since I was eleven. I'm also disabled because I have sciatica which gives me terrible gyp & affect my mobility. I'm also disabled because I have hearing loss in my right ear. That definition of disability is far too wide & does a disservice to people who really are disabled & need help because of their disability.

Something odd going on. (Daily Mail ... sorry)

I saw an article this morning that quoted the owner of the Cider Farm that says they were never more than assistants - he was the farmer. It also stated that the couple were no longer living on the property. Plus there was a quote from an unnamed local saying the Winn/Walkers had moved out and had been gone a while after falling out with the farm owner,

But the article has just vanished - wonder why?

HonoriaBulstrode · 09/07/2025 12:40

I also hope the books and film don't inspire a lot of unfit, unprepared, ill-equipped people to set out on long distance walks over difficult terrain in the hope of a life changing experience. It might well turn out to be life changing, but not in the way they were hoping.

That happened with the DM and their original article about it that referenced the Observer articles; It reappeared later.

I wonder if they get it online then hide it, so that it leaves a footprint, before they later release it properly.

I am totally here for this interview!

Sally Walker aka Raynor Winn is a pure narcissist. Entitled, pathological liar, manipulative, absolutely no remorse.

1. Grandiosity:
A grandiose sense of self-importance and a belief that one is special and unique.

2. Need for admiration:
A constant craving for excessive attention and praise from others.

3. Lack of empathy:
An inability or unwillingness to recognize and understand the feelings and needs of others.

4. Sense of entitlement:
A belief that one is entitled to special treatment and that others should cater to their needs.

5. Exploitative behavior:
Taking advantage of others to achieve personal goals, often without regard for the consequences.

If anything these books are good study of someone with narcissistic personality disorder. Absolutely disgusting 🤢

And on the plus side, thanks to Sally Walker I now know what a Lleyn sheep is (in fact I know it exists - previously I was in the "it's a sheep" group) and I am ready to astonish all my friends with facts about it's maternal instincts.

🤣. Well I could ask the secretary if she knows the parents. I’m sure she knows everything that goes on there. The farming community is very tight. My discussions with her usually about lamb registration documents. This scandal has piqued my interest in the book. I might even buy it to see what she says about farming.

The 'Selling my mother's wedding dress" turn up is the most bizarre of all these shenanigans.

Or one of the most bizarre. I lose track.

I have known one person in my life to have reworn a wedding dress and that was her own grandmother's wedding dress.

Classic narc move. "Look what you made me do!!"

When she is the one who has created absolute devastation.

Maybe they're walking?

Looking up the cider farm, found an old Penguin interview, will link below if anyone hasn't seen it. This stood out from Sally/Raynor

The fall-out from losing their previous home had left deep scars. “We really just didn’t trust people,” she tells me. “It was quite a barrier to get over. "

The quite incredible nerve.

Yes our ewes are well known for their mothering abilities. There are exceptions such as the ewe who lambed directly into a water trough. 😡
