@JanineLory PM me if you like. I'm a wonky donkey as well. No hopium but a bit of support and experience x

Thanks. I didn't realise that. It's a very old account - dear dog passed away 10 years ago & I never use the account offer than to look at the odd thing. Not sure how to get this post removed though 🤷

Sorry about your dog.
I've reported it to Mumsnet. There's a button to report underneath each post. You might want to do the same

They’ve sold 2 million books based on this shite, it is in the public interest. I do think if real life memoir is a lucrative genre then there should be some fact checking. Or the authors have to sign a legal document saying it’s true and if it’s found to be false they have to pay back their royalties or be prosecuted.

Otherwise it’s fiction and some similarities to people alive or dead is purely coincidental. And I don’t think 2 million copies of a made up, fairly unpleasant middle aged couple running from financial ruin because of fraud would have sold at all, or at least not to the same audience for the same purpose.

I don't think it's as black and white as that. Weren't James Herriott's books sold as non fiction? Yet they were only loosely based on fact.

Smashedavacado · 08/07/2025 23:40

@Aspanielstolemysanity thanks I've reported too.

Ellmau · 08/07/2025 23:41

I think they would have continued to get away with it if it hadn't been for the additional publicity from the film.

It’s so annoying Instagram does that!

From what I’ve read it sounds like he does have a health condition but it’s not necessarily CBD - I think they need to come clean because if he is ill in any way then the current belief that it’s all a lie is worse for him

will be interesting to see if the French come after them now!!

My guess is that it's a misdiagnosis. If he'd wanted to make up an illness it would have been easier to come up with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome, both very debilitating illnesses but hard to disprove.

James Herriot's books are inspired by his experiences but are not completely true to life. They are more of a slice of life as a vet at a particular time. However, it would be an entirely different matter if Alf Wight turned out to actually be an accountant living in Watford or if he had never gone to veterinary college and had scammed his clients for years or if he was claiming to have miraculously cured terminally ill pets and farm animals with natural remedies and if you were inspired by his animal wellness advice you might defy your beloved pet's prognosis as well.

The reasons why authors embellish or change their stories matter.

If he has been living under the cloud of a terrible, terminal diagnosis for over a decade and no doctor has noticed this mistake then he should sue the NHS.

@JanineLory Just wanted to say that i empathise with you. I haven't really heard of the book or film, but like you, I have a neurological condition that isnt curable.

I do believe in neuroplasticity and I think the brain is quite adaptable. I've had 3 concussions too over the years, and my brain has somewhat adapted to be kind of ok. I'd love to think there really is a way of curing my movement disorder but as it's caused by some prescribed off label antipsychotic drugs, I'm pretty sure it isnt going to get totally better.

Don't give up hope though. Just because the book has been proven to be lies, doesn't mean you can't improve ❤️

I also have a movement disorder. Have you heard of Dr Joaquin Farias? You might be interested in his book "Intertwined. How to induce neuroplasticity. : A new approach to rehabilitating dystonias"
He is a leading world expert in dystonias (a type of movement disorder for anyone else reading).

How long have you had your MD? I was first diagnosed 20 years ago and in that time have had varying degrees of remissions and flair ups of symptoms. The last time I had a flair up I discovered Dr Farias and his work which helped enormously. I'm currently in a plateau period.

It's rare to come across pp mentioning movement disorders apart from dedicated spaces so I hope you don't mind me replying to you.

I wish you all the best 💐

Yes, here's the paper clipping for interest! 🙂

Catching up and havebt seen this mentioned.

So this is where the names Raynor, Winn, Thomas and Wyn came from, all family names.
(Izzy Wyn-Thomas the author of the book they published 2012).

Anyone searching for clues could probably use combinations of all these names as I'm sure it's not the first time they've changed their names, as the first book's authorship shows.

placemats · 09/07/2025 02:10

I want to know more about the embezzlement and the refurbishment of the run down house. In fact I'm going to write a book about it 😉. If anyone says it's misleading they'll have to prove why.

LivelyCat · 09/07/2025 00:15

I will be fuming if they come out with this after all. If it's a man with fibromyalgia is it assumed doctors look upwards to a possible more serious diagnosis, discounting fibromyalgia as a women's illness? So he'd be more likely to be taken seriously and receive a whole raft of tests? As a woman, I've had nothing since diagnosis beyond the ridiculous offer last week (ten years post diagnosis) to attend a mindfulness workshop and learn how to write a gratitude journal 😡 Perhaps I should have said yes and then sought a publishing deal for it 🙄

Ammophila · 09/07/2025 05:58

EsmaCannonball · 09/07/2025 00:53

I doubt fibromyalgia sells books.

I doubt it does. Not dramatic enough. Just a life of quietly getting on with things whilst struggling with daily pain and fatigue. No reader would be interested. Not enough triumph over adversity.

TwiceForLunch · 09/07/2025 07:12

Hard agree with @Ammophila .

AWanderingFool · 09/07/2025 07:13

(If they exist, which they may not!)

Thank you for your kind words ❤️ Just replying quickly before the school run.

My movement disorder is tardive dyskinesia so it is unfortunately medication induced. I have had it for a decade now, and it was caused by just a week of an off label antipsychotic prescribed for severe insomnia and anxiety after a head injury and post concussion syndrome 😳

My TD has been literally hell at times when it flares up, but I get through it, knowing I have a period of remission after. The worst flare up was about 4 years ago after my youngest daughter was born, and the hormonal fluctuations and sudden decrease really ramped up the movements. It was dreadful.

I agree about neuroplasticity and hope one day I will be free of movements totally. I get horrible weird symptoms that are very odd, and probably more cognitive therefore more related to my concussion symptoms than TD, but it's hard to say for sure.

I will reply properly again later. Hugs to you too 🤗

Maybe they will become the new Neil and Christine Hamilton (disgraced Tory MP and his wife) and get booked for Celebrity Big Brother etc.
Turn this expose into the new story and make a fortune, once a grifter always a grifter.
