To wonder if this is an autistic trait?

I was diagnosed a few years back. I get obsessed with certain people and this obsession normally lasts quite some time (I’m talking celebrities, not “normal people”.

my latest obsession is Courtney love of all people! I can’t stop thinking about her! I’m listening to her constantly, watching videos of her - I think I’ve actually developed a crush on her! 😂 I know it’s not “normal” for someone of my age (I’m around the same age as Courtney) but is it normal for autism?

I'd view it as a special interest.

I'd view it as a special interest.

I never thought of it like that, thank you

Yes, very! Just another special interest ❤️

You sound very similar to my friend who was diagnosed with Asperger's back in the 90s. Definitely a special interest and there's no harm in it.

elliejjtiny · 07/07/2025 17:44

Absolutely. Dh was like that with Johnny Depp when the court case was going on when his ex was accusing him of DV.

stichguru · 07/07/2025 17:46

I'd say very much like a special interest. I mean I guess most special interests are actually an extension of a "normal" hobby. Even those people with a very particular obsession, it will be an extension of someone else's "normal" hobby!

SaintNoMountainHighEnough · 07/07/2025 17:46

Yep. A special interest, love it when one of those triggers.

Yes I get this too, also on real people. Not sure if it's autistic or just a human being thing.

WhatTheHalleBerry · 07/07/2025 17:47

I'm autistic and I do this. I'll research some, fall in love with them. Watch all their films etc. Think about them non stop thwn one day its someone/something else.

Longest one lasted about 5 years though!

Yes it is. It’s an example I’ve heard of why girls can go under the radar for autism. Their special interest will be obsession with a particular celebrity, rather than trains for example, and it’s assumed to be a normal ‘girl thing’. But the intense level of the obsession goes unnoticed.

I was obsessed with Courtney love as a teenager.

I'm a brown dark haired latina who bleached her hair just like courtney. I still think she's amazing.
