To shut my dog in the garden for the day?

Please read the full thing before you call me cruel.

I will be gone from about 8am until late on the night because I'm travelling for a medical procedure that I can't put off any longer. There is no way to make the time shorter due to where I live in relation to the hospital and I need the treatment asap.

I had a dog sitter booked but she had an accident and is currently on crutches and unable to drive. The others in my area are booked or just far too expensive. I have family but only my brother is able to drive and works 12hr shifts so he's only able to visit after 8pm. The house is rural detached with no close neighbours.

He can't go to kennels because I accidentally missed his vaccine boosters during the move and the local ones won't take him without them being up to date.

Dog is a large terrier. I have a large, safe garden with plenty of shady spots regardless of the time of day. I would leave multiple beds for him, including a dog house that was already in the garden when I moved in. There is also an automatic water bucket fitted to the house (previous owner) which he uses happily when we're in the garden. I will leave dry food out.

He absolutely will not toilet in the house, even with puppy pads, so he'd potentially be going 12+ hours without a wee which makes me very uncomfortable because he's had kidney issues in the past.

Please don't be awful - I'm terrified of what the biopsy will show and I'm doing my best.

The others are not going to be that much more money ..they are all pretty much the same price when I looked for my dogs .
I'd say no absolutely not ,you can't do that .
Arnt you worried about him being stolen

We had dogs in the 80s, prior to “Fur Babies” and everyone having “anxious” dogs. It was perfectly normal for dogs to be outside all day .. as long as they have shelter, food & water, I fail to see what the problem is.

They are outdoor animals .. the hair is a bit of a giveaway.

We also never took our dogs on shipping trips, to friends houses, to the pub, or cafe - and we especially didn’t kick off when places were pet-free

100% until the rise of "furbabies" and treating them like children dogs didn't lie on the furniture or share a bed etc etc they also didn't have anxiety or were "reactive" (there were just friendly dogs and guard dogs - your Doberman/Rottweiler/German Shepherd etc which you'd give a wide berth) and "issues" when people treated and trained them like the animals they are.

I am a member of borrow my doggy and we have helped people on your situation before... its free and for us its great as we get to have the pleasure of a dog for a day or two... my kids love it and the walks we have done have been great. I always have dog dropped at my house as I wouldn't personally take a dog in car with my kids I don't know and I think a lot do this so just bare in mind that you would probably have to drop off and pick up.

mugglewump · 07/07/2025 12:22

If you refuse to use one of the more expensive dog walkers/sitters, please post on a local forum if there is a local dog owning teenager who would take your dog for a couple of walks and feed him/her. It seems negligent to leave a dog in the garden all day - particularly considering potential heatwave or last weekend's downpours.

Keepyourheartopenandyoureyeswideshut · 07/07/2025 12:22

Why can't your dog walker come in and do several pop-ins throughout the day?

I wouldn't leave my dog out all day even with lots of shaded areas/water etc. There have been lots of dog kidnapping in our area, I don't think I'd settle.

SUPerSaver721 · 07/07/2025 10:57

Could you not leave your back door open so the dog can go into the garden and house. I think it's fine for 1 day. Give him a licky mat and a bone and he will be fine.

This. I would leave back door open

Figcherry · 07/07/2025 12:22

Our ndn in France goes to work at 8 and gets home at 7pm. His dog is in the garden with covered areas whether hot or cold.
The dog seems to be fine.

theleafandnotthetree · 07/07/2025 11:53

So dogs shouldn't ever be outside unsupervised? I have literally heard it all 🙄

Does your reading comprehension need some work?…

BangaloreLulu · 07/07/2025 12:23

How long is it before your procedure? And are you able to see what the forecast is like for whichever day it is? I'd definitely not leave any dog out if the temperature was due to be as high as we've seen recently, because plenty of dogs have no idea about keeping out of the sun before it's too late.

Could you install a dog flap in your back door to allow him in and out as he pleases? They're not expensive and incredibly easy to fit. Then you'd have peace of mind that the dog was where he wanted to be at any given time, and would have a better chance of staying safe.

If I knew where you were and was close enough to do a couple of pop-ins, I would, but that's probably not considered "safe" nowadays!

Shell18celhave · 07/07/2025 12:23

How far off is the procedure? Do you have time to aclimitise pooch out in the garden if they don't already spend large amount of time out there? So it's not a shock to the system. With some kong style toys that he has to work at to get some treats out off. You know them best & if you think they'll be ok leave them, there's dogs left home alone everyday they cope

HashtagShitShop · 07/07/2025 12:29

Sorry no, this is not OK, not in the current weather at the moment with no one to keep an eye on him. My mixed breed black dog was a sun worshipper and would not have the sense to sit in the shade if not having an eye kept on him. Also gardens are suntrap a and it doesn't take long for my thermometer in the back garden to read 40 degrees even if the rest of the world feels more reasonable.

Personally you get the dog sitter there via taxi or a lift or you book an expensive sitter or ask around friends and family.

Dogs don't ask to come to our homes and are dependant on us to care for them to the best of our ability. You wouldn't ask if it was OK to leave a 5 year old kid alone on the garden all day

aGirlLikeJesamine · 07/07/2025 12:29

what is the weather forecast for that day?
most dogs lie in the sun regardless

i would stump up the cost

This is spot on!

diddl · 07/07/2025 12:35

If you really that this was ok though it surely would have been your original plan?

How much more are the sitters than the one you booked?

Honestly I'd do this for a friend/neighbour rather than have a dog left outside all day that isn't used to it.

SENNeeds2 · 07/07/2025 12:37

Can you just put in a dog flap on a back door - one which opens with his chip in his neck? That way he can come and go as he pleases. He might be barking all day in the backyard. What if you have complications and need to stay overnight?

ukathleticscoach · 07/07/2025 12:40

'the others in my area are booked or just far too expensive'

How much. I would just pay up its just 1 day. Just not worry otherwise. If you have no money £100 is not going to make any difference put in on a card

Maybe they could just turn up midday and take it for a walk..

Barring that probably safer in the house than garden as may try and escape. They can always find a way out you had not thought off. Most dogs can get over over or under a regular 6 ft fence

AelinAG · 07/07/2025 12:42

Absolutely not. What if you end up getting kept in the hospital?

Rover or look on Facebook for a dog sitter. Use the expensive dog sitter.

The point above about him being idle is a good one - and if you get home late at night post procedure and he’s dug himself out, then what?

Could you drive him to one of your family members to mind for the day?

Or massive walks the day before, up at the crack of dawn to take him out for the toilet and a big walk and then leave him instead.

But leaving him outside is an absolutely no.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 07/07/2025 12:43

I would book the expensive sitter. You will worry about the dog otherwise, for ease of mind just pay. This will add to your stress. Or ask a friend? I would help out if you were my friend

The dog seems to be fine.

But that dog is used to that and was presumably trained to that from a pup. Not randomly being left

yakkity · 07/07/2025 12:44

Eyesopenwideawake · 07/07/2025 11:15

Why will he go for 12hrs without a wee if he's going to be in the garden?

Confused.

I think they meant that if they could, could the dog be left inside instead.

our dogs would 100% rather be outside for that time. There is plenty of shade, good water supplies and no neighbours. The judgement needs to be based on the dog. A needy clingy lap dog might get really stressed. A robust working dog breed who loves the outdoors probably won’t even care a bean.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 07/07/2025 12:45

Also to add we have neighbours that leave their dog outside, recently he got stuck outside as the door closed another time he knocked his water over, both of these on very hot days. The noises I hear from makes me think they are not happy being outside all day

Pressthespacebar · 07/07/2025 12:46

For gods sake it’s a dog! It’s one day! Some dogs live outside all the time! Just leave him he will be fine as long as your garden is secure.

AuntieHistamine · 07/07/2025 12:48

Some of these replies 😂 it’s like someone has suggested leaving a toddler alone in a garden. It’s a dog. It will be fine.

PiggyPigalle · 07/07/2025 12:48

XelaM · 07/07/2025 12:22

This. I would leave back door open

Me too. If I'd risk my precious dog being stolen from the garden, might as well risk my belongings as well.

Gloriia · 07/07/2025 12:51

Is it used to be left alone in the garden for 12hrs plus? If not then yabu and cruel.

You do know temps next couple of weeks are going to be 25c and over?

Just get its vaccinations done and book the kennels.
