To shut my dog in the garden for the day?

Please read the full thing before you call me cruel.

I will be gone from about 8am until late on the night because I'm travelling for a medical procedure that I can't put off any longer. There is no way to make the time shorter due to where I live in relation to the hospital and I need the treatment asap.

I had a dog sitter booked but she had an accident and is currently on crutches and unable to drive. The others in my area are booked or just far too expensive. I have family but only my brother is able to drive and works 12hr shifts so he's only able to visit after 8pm. The house is rural detached with no close neighbours.

He can't go to kennels because I accidentally missed his vaccine boosters during the move and the local ones won't take him without them being up to date.

Dog is a large terrier. I have a large, safe garden with plenty of shady spots regardless of the time of day. I would leave multiple beds for him, including a dog house that was already in the garden when I moved in. There is also an automatic water bucket fitted to the house (previous owner) which he uses happily when we're in the garden. I will leave dry food out.

He absolutely will not toilet in the house, even with puppy pads, so he'd potentially be going 12+ hours without a wee which makes me very uncomfortable because he's had kidney issues in the past.

Please don't be awful - I'm terrified of what the biopsy will show and I'm doing my best.

@AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii

the absolute projection of human emotions on to an animal absolutely gives me the rage, people are so ridiculous.

Absolutely this.
People really need to educate themselves before owning a dog.

My dog would be frantic even after 1 hour alone. Maybe yours will be different but I think you need to look at the more expensive dog care. Is there a local Facebook group that can help or borrow my doggy?

Well, you do realise that this canine behaviour is not normal????
You do not have a happy, balanced dog.

You need to read my update. She would be frantic in the garden for 1 hour. Quite happy in the house alone for 3-4 hours. She is a cockerpoo and they are renowned for being clingy. Rest assured, apart from the clingyness, she is a perfectly normal, happy, balanced dog!

I'm just waiting at the moment. Had a lot of checks but think I'm next or after that.

Ted is fine and is snoozing quite happily in the garden apparently!

I’ve commented a few times now - but if you have an Airedale as you reference a large terrier please join the Facebook groups - so many willing people to help with Airedales

I would be worried about a heatwave, no shady spot is going to help your dog if theres a heatwave x

I would be booking another sitter, its just one day. Or puppy pads for toileting and buy a food dispenser.

@Nothanks17

oh no, that would mean dog piss and shit in the house!

surprisebaby12 · 09/07/2025 19:13

I don’t think it’s reasonable to leave a dog for such a long period of time. If anything went wrong, he started getting upset, or he got out somehow then it would be a disaster. Definitely pay extra for a sitter

F1LandoFan · 09/07/2025 19:16

I do not think this is cruel, however, I’m concerned you might be worrying about him and that would increase the stress of your day. I think for that reason I’d look into the expensive option. You don’t know if something might happen on the day meaning you need to stay in x

@F1LandoFan

But then spending all that money might make her even more stressed…

Hope all goes well @Dogingarden Flowers

But I'm a bit concerned I've substantially overslept, please tell me it's not Thursday already?!

No you're fine. ☺️

I got a phone call early this morning saying they'd had a couple of cancellations and they could fit me in if I could get to the hospital. I swear I posted an update on the way but I think I must have just typed it out and not actually updated it.

I'm a bit (really ☹️😑) sore but it's done and I'm home. I'm going to get comfy in bed and find something good to watch. Have the full day tomorrow to feel sorry for myself too. Now I'm just thinking and worrying about the results ☹️

Ted spent all day in the garden by choice according to my sister in-law. He even made her carry his tea out there so he could eat it in his favourite bush 😆

Excellent. Rest well, with your lovely dog to soothe you. I hope the results are good.

Take care of yourself OP

NewAgeNewMe · 14/07/2025 07:00

How are you feeling @Dogingarden

Dogingarden · 03/09/2025 17:58

Hi

Just wanted to update that I had the results back and while they weren't what I'd hoped, I'm starting treatment and will be having surgery to remove the mass. I'm expected to make a full recovery though because it was caught very early!

Good luck with it OP, take care

Could you not leave your back door open so the dog can go into the garden and house. I think it's fine for 1 day. Give him a licky mat and a bone and he will be fine.

Leave the back door open, and go out all day...? 🤔

Spanglemum02 · 03/09/2025 22:45

Good luck OP. Glad it was caught early.

Dogingarden · 05/09/2025 14:30

Thank you! Me too!
