To think AIBU isn’t actually for unpopular opinions anymore?

I thought this board was supposed to be a space to say things that are a bit uncomfortable, provoke debate, or go against the grain. But lately it feels like anything that isn’t wrapped in a cushion of disclaimers or that dares to question certain sacred cows, just gets reported and deleted.

Surely the point of this board is to challenge, disagree, and debate - not just post things everyone already agrees with?

AIBU to think we’re losing the plot a bit?

I thought it was for when people thought they were being unreasonable compared to what most people think. But they really think they're right and therefore actually don't think they're being unreasonable

steff13 · 06/07/2025 14:51

I thought it was for people to pose situations in their life and ask if they are behaving unreasonably. I think it would depend on how unreasonable the person is being whether that behavior is unpopular.

I think you've misunderstood the purpose of the board.

Yes exactly, this is what it should be used for (imo). It still is, but has been a bit diluted over the years.

It used to be a place you only went when feeling strong and battle ready. Now it's definitely a bit more #bekind. And I think that's a bad thing because we have lost a lot of authenticity here, but also a good thing because some people just took it as an excuse to be downright mean and vile.

There's so many more trolls and made up stories and people coming from reddit with their own agendas. I don't invest as much time as I used to in my comments and relating to other members.

This, I think you’ve got the wrong end of the stick OP.

Aibu is mostly used for traffic now, or by people looking for praise

Tidekiln · 06/07/2025 15:04

You just have to be careful how you word your posts.

Magenta82 · 06/07/2025 16:05

You have misunderstood, the main reason to post is if you think you are in the right but someone else has suggested you aren't.

Its to get an opinion from random internet strangers before you either admit you were wrong or double down in real life.

TaborlinTheGreat · 06/07/2025 16:09

I don't think it was ever for unpopular opinions specifically. It's often for situations people are in, when they want opinions about whether they are acting reasonably or not.

ComtesseDeSpair · 06/07/2025 16:13

Some posters still use it for its original purpose: to gauge opinion on whether something they’ve done or their reaction to an experience was unreasonable or not. Loads of other posters just use it for non-related questions “for traffic”, and others just use it to post stuff, very probably often fake, they know full well they wouldn’t be considered unreasonable over (“was I unreasonable to stop two teenagers from kicking a puppy to death in the street and call the police?”) so they can enjoy reading lots of adulation and congratulations. The very latter are the tedious ones.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 06/07/2025 16:45

You guys forgot that it’s now a soapbox to pontificate about pet subjects.

As in AIBU to think that X should be banned because of Y or AIBU to think that Z will bring ruin and destruction

Locutus2000 · 06/07/2025 17:22

AIBU = Am I Being Unreasonable.

Unpopular Opinion is on reddit, maybe you are lost.
