… To be considering leaving the UK?

globalnomad25 · 05/07/2025 13:17

We have been considering leaving, even if only for a few years. Many of our clients have already gone or are planning it, and some of our friends too.

I’m not sure where we’d go: UAE, Portugal, Jersey, Ireland, Canada, Australia? We don’t currently want to move to the US, even though that would probably make the most sense from a business/client point of view.

For those out there who have already left, how has it gone? Was it a horrible mistake or are you glad you did it?

For those also thinking about it, where would you go?

Kids are school-aged and smart and used to international travel as our work already takes us all over, although they’d miss their friends (as would we). We aren’t English so our family is already based all over the place, although we visit them frequently.

Try IOM

Tax breaks, out doors activities, clean, safe, good schools, lots of corporate jobs

My family came to Canada in the 60s and I grew up here. I've since lived in Germany and Spain.

You just don't up and move here.

I'm Canadian but born in the UK. No longer have a UK passport and don't really desire to jump through the hoops to get one. I mean the last time I visited, the lovely man at the border control point said "Welcome Home" and then proceeded to stamp my passport with a "not entitled to access public funds/services" message. Yet, if I pull out my birth certificate I can stay as I have right of abode. I guess landing on a beach in a rubber raft would get me better benefits. Not that I have any desire for them.

Canada is experiencing a housing and job shortage. The last joke of a Prime Minister basically opened our borders to huge numbers of international students who failed to show up for their courses and took low level jobs in food services industries. Our trucking industry is a nightmare as many of the "drivers" went through "driving schools" taught in their own languages and don't understand the size of their trucks and trailers.

We are tired of British "ex-pats" who think they are specials. Our schools aren't good enough, they have to pay taxes, they can't afford things that they think they should. The FB groups are full of them. Did you know it snows here? That winters are cold? People you moved to Canada, what did you expect?

It used to be that people came here to start a new life and accepted the challenges. Yes, there was a struggle but that's the norm. Nobody gives you anything for free. Hard work is valued here, not who you know or how many passports you collected. People think it's a flex to have a UK, Canadian, Nigerian, Indian passports. We don't think that way here, we see these people as users/drifters who want to reap the benefits of a country and then run when the going gets tough.

End of rant.

We’re not finding it terrible and neither are everybody around us. Most are grateful 14 years of Tories are over and accept that sorting out the shit they left and new pressures will take time. Most know are also grateful for the NHS, not having a dictator dismantle their country, safety and no extreme weather patterns. With global warming, aging populations and several wars on the go the entire world is having to accept that life is changing. Simpler things are what we all need to learn to be grateful for .

This. ^ I would love to see one of the UK haters go and see if they can have a much better life in 'one of the countries of their choice.' 🙄

I bet my house that they won't have a much better life. Hilarious that they think that the UK is the only place in the world that has problems, issues, taxes, crime, rising rents, the ever rising cost of living etc.

Are people really that naive and blinkered that they believe that picking the country they think looks quite pretty and seems nice is going to be some kind of Utopia for them? Actual LOL. 😆

As I said earlier though, most people won't go, because deep down, they know which side their bread is buttered. And that the UK is in fact one of the best places in the world to live. Despite any issues it has. There are FAR worse places to live, and some that are OK, but no better than the UK!

Isinglass20 · 06/07/2025 21:42

What’s would worry me is the increasing risk of war both in Europe and Middle East.
Ukraine is not getting the ammunition it needs nor financial support from Europe and US.
Europeans and UK talk about increasing defence spending but have done nothing so far.
Trump’s handling of the US economy is disastrous and more than likely either he will be voted in for third term or a family member
Netanyahu has sewn seeds of distrust in population in surrounding countries which will last for generations (Palestinians remember the betrayal of Arabs by UK in 1920s).

Why do you assume the UK is the best possible place to live?

I mean sure, it's better than a good number of the other 194 countries in the world. No one is going to chose to move from the UK to Afghanistan, Albania or Sudan. That's why citizens of those countries try to move here.

But surely you don't think it's the very best?! So why shouldn't UK citizens who have options choose to move too?

If you choose to live abroad I don't see why you should expect your DC to get student loans in the UK. Basing eligibility on residence seems reasonable - and 3 years' residence in an area of the UK has always been the criteria for grants and loans, even in the long years ago when I went to university. My local authority gave me a grant. I had to live in that authority and to have done so for a number of years.

The rational criteria for funding university isn't strictly where the parents live, but rather which students are most likely to use that education to become (as highly contributing as possible) taxpayers and also stay in the UK long enough to repay the investment in their education. But there are political reasons why that isn't the criteria. So family location acts as a proxy.

This! And this is the gist of it- which country can I go to in order to pay the least but get the most.

It’s pretty vile and arrogant.

It's a reaction to the UK's strategy (especially the current Labour government) of squeezing as much cash as possible out of a tiny number of people, at the same time as denying means-testing them out of any of the services they're paying for... and all the while making clear how much you despise them.

Who would accept that treatment when they have other options?

strawberrybubblegum · 06/07/2025 22:12

And it's not really "pay the least but get the most".

It's "pay a reasonable amount and in return benefit fairly - and be respected and appreciated for any extra, if I contribute more than others."

Rather than be squeezed for every penny, get none of the supposedly shared state services, and be despised for being successful and contributing more than my share

A tiny number of people who are paid far more than they should be compared to a huge majority who are paid far less than they should be.

Maybe appreciate what you have instead of inflicting other countries with your greed.

Funny how you know what people are worth.😂

Completely agree with this. It’s like saying a battered wife is arrogant for leaving thinking it’ll be better somewhere else,

But this is a problem atm in a different way. We have too many people not paying in but demanding more.

I said THE UK IS ONE OF THE BEST PLACES IN THE WORLD TO LIVE.

Yes, it is. The UK is behaving like shit towards higher earners right now.

Posters on this thread are saying that we're arrogant and greedy to imagine that we could possibly have a better life elsewhere. It's very weird.
