Hi can someone help? Please. Came home tonight and found my cat just leaving the litter box. She was covered in blood and poo and in the litter she been but it was runny and blood in it. She then vomitted twice. Took the vet’s who couldn’t examine her due to her behaviour, so said come back tomorrow morning after she’s had some calming down meds. We came home and she’s tried to go the loo 3 times but nothing comes out except tiny amount of blood. I’m beside myself. Can anyone help?

I'd be getting a second opinion from a different vet ASAP!

Gettingbysomehow · 04/07/2025 22:28

Why the hell didn't this vet give her a mild sedative injection then examine her?

Picklechicken · 04/07/2025 22:30

Vet sounds absolutely negligent! Get a second opinion. Ring round for an emergency vet.

tinyspiny · 04/07/2025 22:31

I’d take her to the OOH vet

ThinWomansBrain · 04/07/2025 22:34

Odd behaviour from the vet.
Hope that you get it sorted - and that she is better soon, boor baby.

Lighteningstrikes · 04/07/2025 22:35

Blood in the poo is because of worms, and she needs worming ASAP.

PurpleFlower1983 · 04/07/2025 22:35

Back to the emergency vet now.

GentleSheep · 04/07/2025 22:35

That's not good at all, OP, she needs an emergency vet.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 04/07/2025 22:36

Agree with others, emergency vet. And your regular vet is shockingly bad.

GivingBloodIsAGoodThing · 04/07/2025 22:36

Emergency vet asap

Please don't give guesstimated diagnoses with such certainty.

Plmnki · 04/07/2025 22:37

I almost can’t believe what I am reading. No vet would say this, ever, not in the U.K. ? It’s extremely odd. Incredibly odd.

OnTheBoardwalk · 04/07/2025 22:42

Assume you paid ££££ for an emergency vet appointment and they sent you away with no treatment apart from calming meds? that is really not on

i know vets that take in feral cats out of hours and they’ve given them calming drugs and treated them

no vet should send a cat straining to have a poo and only passing blood out the door

No. Not always. Not even close. There are many, many differentials for blood in faeces.

@Discoprincess6 you need to find another vet.

It can be caused by numerous reasons. Advising worming when there is clearly GI issues isn’t great advice. Please don’t take advise from strangers on the internet. Call the vet and explain that she needs examining or find another vet.

PeapodMcgee · 04/07/2025 23:07

I've met a vet who was afraid of cats and would subsequently do barely any care. Ridiculous and unprofessional.

Please go to a different emergency vet. A sedative can be given via injection immediately if necessary.

Discoprincess6 · 04/07/2025 23:28

Are you joking that was all the vet had to do was give a sedative injection?!

I will be looking for another vet once this is sorted. She’s tried going the loo 3 times this evening and only blood comes out.

when she vomitted earlier it was dry food, no blood.

she had eaten and drank and she’s rolling around the floor playing with her stick toy so she is ok. She’s purring away and shouting at me. like she is fully herself.

she’s let me feel her abdomen and nothing is there, she’s not in pain from what I can see.

she’s very very feisty so the vet said it was a good sign that she was herself. They took her away from me to examine her as I was sobbing so I don’t know what they did or didn’t do. She told me they’d tried those glove things.

spoke with emergency vet on phone and they said if she appears ok leave her until morning. They said she’s eating drinking and playing indicates she’s ok but bring her in if worsens.

what do you guys think? I’m going to sleep on the couch tonight with her. She normally
sleeps in bed with me but her litter is downstairs so think it’s best keep her near it.

Edited

The vet I seen earlier was my own vet. But I really will be looking for a new vet as soon as she’s ok.

Is she passing urine ok? Straining for a pee can look like straining for a poo, so blood aside please do check. A blocked urethra is indeed a medical emergency.

I know that was my feeling. She’s fiesty and hissy but she doesn’t have any teeth so can’t bite you. Actually she has her canines. She just hates that vets. I don’t blame her tbh. Shes antisocial but there are worse cats than her.

Do you have pet insurance?

my dog’s insurance includes an out of hours emergency line you can call for advice over the phone from a vet:

look at your policy if you have one ?

Hope your cat is ok

Yes she’s passing urine ok. I’ve not kept track but she’s definitely been twice for wee today. I’ll keep track now so thank you for highlighting that.

Surely you need a new vet to deal with whatever is wrong with her now? As your current vet is not adequate.

pinkstripeycat · 04/07/2025 23:35

My cat came in at bed time and there was blood on the floor. Not in his poo. I thought he’d been attacked but he had a blood clot and was having a heart attack. He was thrashing about all over the place. It was mid Covid and the vet saw him immediately. Didn’t matter that he was thrashing around and was hard to hold. He was sedated so vet with nurses help could examine him.

Yes I’m with pet plan. Thank you I’ll check this now. I hope shes ok too. She’s my absolute world. I’m not a mother but I felt utter fear today. I’ve took some medication to calm me down.
