Hi can someone help? Please. Came home tonight and found my cat just leaving the litter box. She was covered in blood and poo and in the litter she been but it was runny and blood in it. She then vomitted twice. Took the vet’s who couldn’t examine her due to her behaviour, so said come back tomorrow morning after she’s had some calming down meds. We came home and she’s tried to go the loo 3 times but nothing comes out except tiny amount of blood. I’m beside myself. Can anyone help?

Good luck OP that they are finding out what's wrong with her and can give her some relief. Buy some cod or any white fish and white rice for her recovery. It helped my cat he even ate some. Some cats like fortiflora and it entices them to eat if they are a bit meh about their special diet.

@Twatalert I fed Animonda Carny. Ingredients: Beef: beef (65%, meat, heart, liver, lung, udder, kidney), calcium carbonate, sodium chloride. Turkey: turkey* *(68% heart, liver, stomach, meat, necks), rapeseed oil, calcium carbonate, sodium chloride.

She was a bit miffed at first, but a crushed Thrive treat (salmon or tuna) sprinkled on top helped a lot.

You can get Animonda Carny from Zooplus and Bitiba. I use Bitiba for cat food and cat litter. It's cheaper than Zooplus.

Edited

Got the beef at home, thanks. Still waiting for my cat to heal before trying something new. The thrive treats caught my eye too.

Surprisingly mine likes the seriously good freeze dried cod bites from pets at home. They smell very fishy.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/07/2025 10:10

Find a different vet. That is appalling treatment, for what is clearly a very unwell cat.

amooseymoomum · 05/07/2025 10:11

is she spayed? I am not giving a diagnosis but wonder if it would be uterus related
no sod the weekend I would be going to another vet in the morning
you are not daft i have been in situations like this and have been climbing the walls with worry and panic
they are our babies and need the best we can give them

Blood in the poo is because of worms, and she needs worming ASAP.

Such an ignorant comment.

Colitis can cause blood in the poo as can umpteen other medical issues!!!

Exactly! Worms is an extremely unlikely cause - and yet said with such utter conviction.

thecatneuterer · 05/07/2025 11:04

If by any chance she isn't spayed then pyometra is possible. I'm assuming she is though. Rat poison is certainly something to rule out. Cystitis is possible - but she would be too-ing and fro-ing to the litter tray more.

Whatever, get her seen today.

cloudyblueglass · 05/07/2025 11:05

Oh op. I hope she’s ok. This sounds like poisoning - warfarin or similar. This happened to my Alsatian - someone had been putting small regular amounts of poison into our garden and we didn’t know about it. It all came to a head. She was very lucky to survive.

Ddakji · 05/07/2025 11:08

How is she this morning @Discoprincess6? Poor wee thing.

Agree with others to get a new vet. Hope the emergency one is of more help x

Are you joking that was all the vet had to do was give a sedative injection?!

I will be looking for another vet once this is sorted. She’s tried going the loo 3 times this evening and only blood comes out.

when she vomitted earlier it was dry food, no blood.

she had eaten and drank and she’s rolling around the floor playing with her stick toy so she is ok. She’s purring away and shouting at me. like she is fully herself.

she’s let me feel her abdomen and nothing is there, she’s not in pain from what I can see.

she’s very very feisty so the vet said it was a good sign that she was herself. They took her away from me to examine her as I was sobbing so I don’t know what they did or didn’t do. She told me they’d tried those glove things.

spoke with emergency vet on phone and they said if she appears ok leave her until morning. They said she’s eating drinking and playing indicates she’s ok but bring her in if worsens.

what do you guys think? I’m going to sleep on the couch tonight with her. She normally
sleeps in bed with me but her litter is downstairs so think it’s best keep her near it.

It's uttetly bizarre that TWO vets have been so cavalier about a cat with blood in her faeces. Or that a qualified vet would say leave her because she's behaving normal, when they know cats will hide even critical illnesses as long as they can.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 05/07/2025 11:38

Plmnki · 04/07/2025 22:37

I almost can’t believe what I am reading. No vet would say this, ever, not in the U.K. ? It’s extremely odd. Incredibly odd.

Yes they would. Then they'd prescribe gabapentin and trazadone (taken the night before and then 2 hours before appointment) and say come back in the morning.

Unless the cat couldn't urinate at all.

This is one of the most common ailments that clients book an appointment for.

It usually ends up with some pro-bind paste (cheaper from a pet shop) and/or some NSAIDS and being told to give a bland diet like boiled fish.

Unless they're not eating/drinking and are lethargic it's generally not an emergency.

If they're not urinating then it's an emergency.

Discoprincess6 · 05/07/2025 12:06

Hi everyone. We went to our vet (different one from yesterday) and they said colitis. They examined her and nothing was found. I described everything a that’s when they said colitis. Sent me away with powder for her food
once per day. She’s ate it! Yay! I just need her to have the probiotic tonight. I’m changing vets once she’s back to full health. The vet said it will clear up on its own in few days. She had gavapentin which calmed her down. Nothing abnormal when feeling her.

That’s an encouraging update. I hope your cat is soon back to full health.

That changes nothing about my views here.

Interestingly the vet we saw was also pretty cavalier about Elton's bloody poo - I got the impression that it's usually not as serious as it looks and yes not weeing is much more serious, especially for boys

powershowerforanhour · 05/07/2025 13:10

Glad the cat is doing better.

Why?

I just am. They act like she’s some lunatic because she hisses.

I know with boys it can be really dangerous. Is Elton ok?

It's ridiculous for a vet to act this way. Your cat isn't a lunatic. When cats visit the vet, they're out of their comfort zone and can become frightened, causing them to hiss (in fear).

I wouldn't feel confident seeing a vet who wasn't comfortable around cats displaying 'adverse' behaviour. Your cat reacted in a natural way and your vet sending you away initially was not appropriate.

I hope your cat has a speedy recovery.

powershowerforanhour · 05/07/2025 13:56

"Your cat reacted in a natural way "
true

"and your vet sending you away initially was not appropriate."
not necessarily true. What should they have done?

OnTheBoardwalk · 05/07/2025 14:41

Great news @Discoprincess6 so glad the 2nd vet did an actual exam and gave you the meds that were needed hopefully she'll take her probiotic tonight

can I ask, how and when did they give her the gavapentin? Was this part of the treatment or to calm her down?

Yes that was the calming down meds I just didn’t know how to spell it last night and couldn’t be bothered looking it up to spell correctly. I gave it to her last night and then this morning.

she had the tablet crushed into food for a while but got on to it. Then I had the liquid wouldn’t touch her food with it and I couldn’t give it directly was scared of hurting her upsetting her.

they gave me syrup last night and I jammed it in her mouth. She wasn’t happy but it was essential. I did the same this morning. You give the does night before then 1.5 before your appt.

Thank you. She seems to be straining using the litter so will keep an eye on her.

felt more confident seeing this vet this morning. Like my cat was kicking off but the vet was unfazed. I wrapped her in a towel.

it was only when she went to have her temp done she went loco so she wasn’t able too have it. But everything else was ok.

Thank you for asking after Elton @Discoprincess6 - unfortunately he died a few months ago of kidney failure but the bloody poo had nothing to do with that.
