We are supposed to go to Crete on Monday. We are staying on the north east of the island so not close to the fires currently but I’m worried they will spread. Am I being OTT to consider cancelling? My husband thinks we should go. Thank you!!

How far are you from Ierapetra?

I'd likely go, Crete is enormous.

TheCurious0range · 04/07/2025 07:30

It's a very large island, speak to your hotel/holiday provider. It's also worth contacting your insurance I think at this point they're unlikely to cover cancellation.

So we are staying at domes of Elounda

I’d think your travel insurance would be more likely to cover you if your flights were cancelled due to wildfires, rather than cancelling them now because you want to. Crete isn’t that small, I’d just keep an eye out. I can’t see any advantage to cancelling now really

I think Europe is too hot right now to be comfortable.

Topsy1976 · 04/07/2025 08:05

I’m in Crete near Heraklion and you wouldn’t know about the wildfires here apart from the news. I don’t think you’d need to cancel. It’s still a long way away.

insomniac1 · 04/07/2025 14:43

Thank you everyone! We arrive on Monday but apparently it’s going to get even hotter middle of next week?

Not too bad - it’s been high 20s (maybe 30/31) and quite breezy so it’s manageable
