Cousin Coerced Into Marriage Advice Needed

TheCoralMoose · 03/07/2025 13:19

My cousin who is 37 met someone 11 months ago.

He is much older but not as old as he said he was at first.

She never intended to marry him just go on dates and she decided not to let him move in her apartment which she owns. He had a house which he owned since learned he gave it to his daughter just after meeting my cousin.

He said he was 45 he is actually 61.

Him and my cousin had a 5 day break booked for las vegas just before she decided she no longer wanted him.
She went ahead with the vegas break because he paid a lot of money for it.

On the day before they were due to fly back she doesnt know if she was spiked or given too much alcohol but he took her very intoxicated to a chapel and they get wed.

On returning home she told him its still over then he shown her the marriage certificate.

She called her mum and dad and they came round told him to get out he said fuck off its my place as much as hers and threatened them.

What can be done?. No its not a joke thread its deadly serious.

He has said because he is older and now his daughter has his house his housing needs will be more than hers because she is younger than him.

Is this something the police will get involved in.

Unsurprisingly, the demand for LV annulments is rather high. It’s worth her contacting a service there that deals with this, as it can be moved along quickly.

Abe should speak to the chapel. Is there cctv, you are legally allowed to requeat cctv footage of yourself.
How did she sign the certificate. Who were the witnesses?
She needs to get in touch with all of them and vegas police department.

Ohtobemycat · 03/07/2025 14:14

If you regret marrying someone and wish to annul the marriage immediately, you can apply for an annulment as soon as you are legally married, without waiting a year like with a divorce. An annulment legally declares that the marriage was never valid from its beginning, based on specific legal grounds, rather than ending an existing legal marriage like a divorce.

Key points for annulment:
No waiting period:
Unlike divorce, there is no waiting period for filing for an annulment.

Grounds for annulment:
You must have specific legal grounds to qualify for an annulment. These are limited and generally include:
Fraud or misrepresentation that induced you to marry.

Duress or force that caused you to enter the marriage against your will.

Lack of consent due to mental incapacity or intoxication at the time of marriage.

Being already married to someone else at the time of the ceremony.

Unconsummated marriage (with some exceptions for same-sex marriages).

Was the marriage consummated ? If not she needs to apply for an annulment. Right now !!

How does that actually work, as there's no proof either way?

No. She remembers going into a restaurant then feeling very ill.

She was sick on the plane coming back to the UK.

If it was a vegas wedding is it legal and binding.

Probably not. First if all: she should call the cops and kick him out. It is for him to prove its legal and even if it is legal it still doesn’t guarantee him rights over her or the house. Too new. He needs to prove its legal snd if it is she should move right towards annulment and counter civil suit for fraud and drugging her.

Topseyt123 · 03/07/2025 14:36

She needs legal advice quickly. She also needs to get the police to remove this arsewipe from her apartment.

I suspect (hope, even) that this may not be a legal marriage. She doesn't remember ever consenting, so she probably didn't. It also sounds like she was drugged (maybe some date rape drug??) in order to make it happen, if it did. Annulment can and should be sought if it indeed transpires that the marriage took place.

I'm not sure whether there are any reliable blood tests that could show whether she was drugged or not, or what substance was used. It might be too late now, but worth asking her GP on the off chance??

What a total arsehole this guy is!!

InterIgnis · 03/07/2025 14:36

Oh, and yes to kicking him out now.

DiscoBob · 03/07/2025 14:38

Surely it can be annulled when one person claims they weren't conscious enough to consent and don't want to be married to him.

I guess contact the local record office for LV, who handles marriage certificates, and ask about annulment.

VQ1970 · 03/07/2025 14:39

As others have said, when I got married in LV we had to go to the County Court office first to obtain a licence. We both needed ID and had to sign documents. It's unlikely she would have been able to do this so I suspect it's not legal. She needs to seek legal advice.

ApolloandDaphne · 03/07/2025 14:41

She would have needed to go get the licence along with him and present ID. It sounds like it was just a fake wedding and he is trying to dupe her.

If it was a vegas wedding is it legal and binding.

Not if she was too drunk to consent!

She needs legal advice asap.

exhaustedbeinghappy · 03/07/2025 14:41

I got married in Vegas - you have to go to the courthouse the day before to get the licence. (Admittedly that was 20 years ago) You couldn’t just rock up at the Elvis chapel and get married on a whim

Tiswa · 03/07/2025 14:42

The marriage can be annulled. Even so with such a short marriage it is unlikely that there will be asset split anyway.

Manxexile · 03/07/2025 14:44

... He is much older but not as old as he said he was at first...

... He said he was 45 he is actually 61...

That literally makes no sense...

TaggieO · 03/07/2025 14:44

Vegas weddings aren’t legal and binding unless you also go to the Clark county bureau first and register for a marriage license so if they just went to the wedding chapel they are not married.

Alltheyellowbirds · 03/07/2025 14:44

Sounds like he thought he could get himself a free house. What an arse.

Its likely not legal but if it is she can annul it straightaway.

In the meantime don’t let him into the house, and report the whole thing to the police.

OriginalSkang · 03/07/2025 14:44

I got married in Las Vegas. They both would have had to go to pick up the license in advance of getting married which includes filling out a load of forms in person.

I don't think whatever ceremony they had means anything

It’s still the case

Omeara · 03/07/2025 14:45

You need a licence to get married in Vegas. I would also call the chapel to confirm the ceremony took place. If it did then I would speak to the Nevada police dept as you will want any CCTV preserved.

SkintSingleMumm · 03/07/2025 14:45

Act quickly, police for coercive control snd vulnerable, manipulation. Legal advice asap. What a prick. Thought hed found his meal ticket. Nothing but a cocklodger

OriginalSkang · 03/07/2025 14:48

If she didn't go and get the license then this is definitely not a legal marriage. Its not his place at all. I would definitely speak to the police about this. Just phone the non emergency number

AddictAlice · 03/07/2025 14:52

Just when you think you've heard it all these scammers come out into the open and let you know that you don't know the half of it.

Isxmasoveryet · 03/07/2025 14:52

So having to be present and consent to marry age license including handing over id and the present and consent at wedding it not like the movies where u waltz into a random chapel n leave married no questions asked

sandrafarringdon66 · 03/07/2025 14:53

Yes, quickie drunk Vegas marriage certificate is valid in the UK unless there was some sort of coercion which will make it ilegal in the state of nevada.

She needs to consult a UK lawyer and a US lawyer asap (you can easily do a consultation with US lawyer by zoom nowadays so not difficult at all).

edit: just read the above posts ('ve lived most of my life in the US) and you definitely need a marriage licence before the wedding that involves lots of paperwork. If no licence and just an Elvis wedding she doesn't need to worry as it won't be recognise here in the UK.

Viviennemary · 03/07/2025 15:06

Maybe she just had a bad dream.
