DD20 car serious safety recall - left with no car?

Doornon · 03/07/2025 06:38

DD20 lives at home and drives a car to work that’s had a stop drive notice put on it urgently. You need to get a slot with a dealer to carry out the recall but some people are having to wait months for the repair. We couldn’t get through to anyone yesterday by phone so I will try again today. She won’t be insured to drive the car as it’s unsafe

DD is too young to hire a car as you need to be 21. I think the manufacturer will maybe give some compensation if there is a long wait, but we don’t know this for sure. They are NOT giving courtesy cars.

I am not sure what to do.

DD’s job is shifts, 10 miles away so I’m having to take and collect her as no direct public transport at all. I also have a FT job in the opposite direction! I’m already exhausted

She can’t work from home or change her shift times

Public transport doesn’t run at her shift times and isn’t direct (would involve 2 hours of changing/waiting)

She could get taxis but this will be very expensive there and back and not sure if she will be able to claim any costs back.

Insure her on my car at our cost and then I hire a car?

Ask my job to WFH so I can lend her my car?

WWYD? I am frazzled by this

Honestly I would just carry on driving the car until it’s fixed. Hundreds of thousands of people have been driving these cars for over a decade without anybody noticing a problem until now. It hasn’t suddenly become more dangerous overnight.

A (potential) airbag fault doesn’t make you more likely to crash. It just means you might be more affected if you do crash. Personally, I’d be willing to take that risk for a few months.

The problem is you won't be insured to do so as it's a stop notice.

This thread is as infuriating as the issue.

Realistically you have few options and your suggestion is probably the best.

If there's any spare cash she could try a pick up a very cheap runaround. Our local FB pages often have these advertised and it would hopefully last a couple of months.

The problem remains that you'd need to transfer the insurance and find someone willing to let you put the C3 on a drive or off road.

Is that Legit? It’s just an MS office form. I can’t find it on the RAC website. I don’t advise anyone filling this out….

agree unless directly asked to by Citroen.

“The RAC is assisting Citroen with a safety recall related to potentially faulty airbags in certain C3 and DS3 models. If your Citroen vehicle is affected by the recall, you will be notified by letter and can also check the Citroen UK website using your VIN. The RAC is providing roadside assistance and potentially recovery services for affected vehicles, ensuring they are taken to a Citroen retailer for repair”

I filled it in. I’ll let you know if/when they get back to me. I was given it from the one and only Citroen phone person I managed to speak to.

Yes, these things have occurred to me. That doesn’t begin to explain MN’s, and the UK’s, general loathing of cyclists.

Oh, and I’m not particularly into bikes, I don’t even own one at present. I simply get frustrated at all the hate surrounding them.

I said I wouldnt use a bike either

I have 2 bikes. I love cycling. I dont cycle on roads

Bjorkdidit · 03/07/2025 18:08

Clearinguptheclutter · 03/07/2025 17:15

agree unless directly asked to by Citroen.

Definitely be wary. Every time there's a high profile consumer issue, criminals crawl out of the woodwork with scams, so there could well be someone knocking up an official looking form right now that people can just fill in to get the quickest possible repair appointment and compensation for their inconvenience, all for a modest registration fee.

Doornon · 03/07/2025 19:12

I’m categorically ignoring the persistent bike chat. wtf 🙄

Citroen has a help line but there is a very long wait, I think it’s how you can get a claim form, they are saying £22 per day in costs can be claimed.

This is a LEGIT link to follow the instructions of what to do

https://www.citroen.co.uk/maintain/safety-recall-check.html

DD had to register the VIN then we called, booked in and now the car is not able to be driven. I don’t recommend booking the visit then trying to claim to your insurance you ‘didn’t know’ anything god forbid the possible consequences sound awful so I hope people don’t carry on driving

I assume they might eventually do home visits but this will be through Citroen directly because it’s a warranty repair and will be FREE.

Don’t get ripped off guys there will be sharks!

At 5am or 11pm? I’m not stupid but this is stupid I’m afraid. It’s shift work I said that: it’s not normal hours in the daytime

buying an E bike? We can’t afford that. Please 😂

Edited

She could easily do 10 miles on a normal bike and 5am is light and will be quiet for traffic. She could then do taxis or Uber for the shifts that end at 11pm.

Are you being serious. Is that the only post you read and ignored all the others? If I didn’t hate bikes before this thread started, I very much hate bikes now and the obsessive behaviour brought out by them.

You like riding a bike at 5am before a 12 hour shift, 10 miles down a country lane? Good for you. 🖕

Wow! Just trying to help. Your attitude is disgusting.

Elbowpatch · 03/07/2025 19:28

I’m not sure if this has been suggested but, if you insured her for your car, she could drive to and from her work in your car with you as the passenger. It’s obviously not ideal but at least you wouldn’t be driving quite so much.

But it’s not particularly helpful to post about using a bike when OP has already stated a lot of times why this isn’t appropriate. I suspect you’ve only read the first post then commented.

That doesn't excuse her attitude and her sticking a finger up on her post.

Eskarina1 · 03/07/2025 19:36

Do you have legal advice on your home insurance or if not ring the cab. I know it doesn't help short term but it might help to understand whether they are allowed to limit the amount they will pay, below your actual losses.

We had a car a couple of years back (it was a new car) which had all the drivers assistant set to Europe. So it would slam the breaks on if we overtook and other really unsafe behaviour. It was a known but not publicised issue with the car. They initially gave us a courtesy car but when they realised the fix hadn't been developed yet they tried to just leave us with the car with no fix deadline.

We set out the legal position and they suddenly discovered they could give a full refund (which they couldn't before). I know that's not what you want, but it may be they are legally obliged to cover all reasonable costs.

soupyspoon · 03/07/2025 19:43

I wonder if you can take them to small claims court for the extra costs, they say they'll only pay 22 a day but due to their error it will cost the customer much more, so they need to be recompensed.

But your post was very much giving ‘teach a grandma to suck eggs’. And you’re not the first.
I imagine it gets annoying 5 pages in.

Evilspiritgin · 03/07/2025 19:48

Depending on her job, can you see if they can put her on middle shifts for the time being?

Regardless of whether is was irritating it's no excuse. Would we think it's acceptable for a teenager, partner, employee or child to stick their finger up because they're irritated. Of course not.

Shade17 · 03/07/2025 20:03

but they did install a new clutch for just the cost of parts.

Of course they did, it was less labour for them than re-using the old one!

uggmum · 03/07/2025 20:13

stop with the e bike suggestions. I wouldn’t want my dd riding an e bike 10 miles home, especially after working shifts.
I can’t actually ride a bike. Literally can’t balance. So I would injure myself

Human has human reaction shocker.

Not everything has to be well modelled. Sometimes people lose their shit. You dont have to 'control your emotions' all the time.

Perhaps you're projecting. The girl has to get to work and it's a period that's a bit rubbish until her car gets fixed. It's hardly war torn Ukraine, getting evicted from your home or a cancer diagnosis is it. If they can't even control themselves over a car then heaven help them when tougher situations occur. Anyway I'm going to walk the dogs, shower and go to bed so have a good night all.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/07/2025 20:39

@Luggagerackistopheavy so do you cycle 20 miles a day and do a 12 hour shift? Do you expect your kids to do that? What do you suggest the OP’s DD does with the bike when she gets a taxi home? Also, are you on glue?

I await your work / cycle schedule.

I post as someone who walks to work every day but realises this is lot always feasible

eta I’ve just seen you’ve done that annoying “I’m out” post now you’ve been challenged.
