To think the word “community” gets thrown around by people who just want an audience?

You’re not building a village. You’re building a following.

Mostly in online spaces - like influencers or brands saying they’re ’building community’ when it’s clearly about gaining followers or customers. Nothing wrong with growing an audience but I think the word ‘community’ gets used to make it sound more mutual or noble than it really is.

it's hardly mis-selling, @WiseBlueStork is it?

You're definitely overthinking this. Put the fan on and have a nice cold drink.

Maybe! But I still stand by the point, I’ve seen the word ‘community’ stretched beyond meaning lately 😅

Oops I voted wrong, I don't think YABU. Influencers are the fucking worst.

This is what so many gay people I know say, they are very disgruntled a being bunched into a community they never agree to be part of and feel very annoyed at the collective voice that isn’t theirs.

Maybe mis-selling’s too strong. I just think ‘community’ used to mean something more mutual. Now it often feels like branding shorthand for an audience you want to monetise. Not always a bad thing but I think it’s worth noticing.
