School shoes - end of term

ipkissmyass · 30/06/2025 22:25

Ds school shoes are knackered. The sole is flapping. I am loathe to buy new ones two weeks before school ends for the summer and suggested he wears his black trainers for the next two weeks. He said he will get put in isolation and would rather wear the flappy shoes.

Aibu to send him in these? Would anyone really buy new shoes at this point in the term?

Get some Super Glue, or Gorilla Glue, and save yourself some money and aggro.

BritAirwaysgirl · 30/06/2025 22:28

I bought all of my children's school shoes off of eBay. You can pick up good quality shoes for a fraction of the original price. Might be worth a look or maybe vinted.

Itsanewnameeveryday · 30/06/2025 22:28

Could you ask a local cobbler to repair them?
I’d look on marketplace, lots or almost new Dr Martens on there which can be resold later if needed.

I’ve only got No More Nails in which doesn’t seem to have done a very good job 😂

I think they are beyond repair and the fee would probably be more than a cheap pair of supermarket ones would cost. Really don’t want to spend the money! It’s a shame schools can’t be a bit more relaxed with their uniform policy at this point in the year.

As a teacher, I wouldn't want a parent to buy new shoes at this point in the year. By the time you get to September, the child's feet may have grown so much they won't get anywhere out of a pair of new shoes. Send a note to the teacher of explaining this.

BeachLife2 · 30/06/2025 22:31

YWBVU to get your DS put in isolation, yes.

Presumably his feet won't grow so fast in six weeks, so they'll still fit in September.

I don't know of any decent school that would allow trainers.

BackToRealitySigh · 30/06/2025 22:31

How old is he? How many pairs of shoes does he go through a year? Are his feet likely to grow over summer that much?
I'd just buy new ones, cheap supermarket if you really think he'll grow. Maybe size up 1/2 size.
I sropped buying new for Sept and just buy as and when needed now - works out no more expensive but cost is spread out.

Moveoverdarlin · 30/06/2025 22:34

Get super glue, that shiny stick polish from Clarks which in my opinion really transforms school shoes. That’ll all come to about £8 and tide you over.

WhenYouSayNothingAtAll · 30/06/2025 22:36

How old is he? Are his feet likely to keep growing at a considerable rate? Can you email his head of year and ask whether they’ll compromise for the sake of a few weeks? Can you borrow a pair from one of his school mates that outgrew his shoes(we used to do that a lot in primary, same with football boots)?

If the soles are flapping and unfixable, buy shoes. Try Vinted, eBay, your school swap shop if it exists, and buy a little big.

Bushmillsbabe · 30/06/2025 22:43

My daughters school took a sensible approach - I messaged teacher to apologise that DD wasn't in school shoes, they were on order and she would have them on Monday. She replied to say 'she is always dressed 100% in line with uniform policy and always looks smart, she can just wear her trainers until end of term as long as they are mainly black.

MamaAndTheSofa · 30/06/2025 22:43

Can you email school and ask? We had similar with DS last week; I emailed school and they said of course to send him in trainers. They’re not overly strict on uniform, though, and it’s primary - secondary might be different.

No point using Vinted. The seller can technically take up to 5 days to post them, then delivery time onto top. It could be nearly the holidays before they arrive. If I’m buying new I’d rather just get some tomorrow from the supermarket so he can actually get some use out of them in the next two weeks. However the flappy soles don’t seem to bother him at all. He said they’ve been like it for a while but he just didn’t tell me because he didn’t want me to have to buy new ones.

Not superglue you need a two part glue with a glue and an activator ,
like mitre bond.

minnienono · 30/06/2025 22:46

Superglue

creekyjohn · 30/06/2025 22:49

They just have been well worn for a while to get to the point of the sole hanging off. Surely he needed a new pair ages ago? I would get a cheap pair from Asda or similar if you are that bothered about downing money on them, but you cannot make hi wear those shoes.

In this country. On the continent children manage to go to perfectly good schools in their own clothes and trainers , (weather appropriate instead of boiling blazers in Summer and flimsy silly shoes in icy conditions). They even have things like lockers and coat pegs and all functions without a problem.

Third pair this year. Not cheap either. Unfortunately despite my pleas to look after them he plays football in them most days and they aren’t really built for that sort of wear and tear.

Whatsthestoryo · 30/06/2025 23:07

Surely his feet will be the same size between now and September so it's only buying them a bit early rather than an extra pair.

Each to their own but I wouldn't have my child going to school looking like that. Even if it was money rather than lacksadaisical thing, you could pick up a pair from the charity shop or Primark for a few quid.

Eight8eight · 30/06/2025 23:12

I would definitely buy some more, even at this stage. Hopefully they will still fit in September.
Could he not change into trainers to play football, going forwards?

DC’s private school changed their shoes policy a couple of years ago to allow black trainers. They all wear black Air Force Ones now. It’s far more sensible for walking to school and playing football/basketball at lunch. DC get far more wear out of them as they get worn out of school as well. It’s had no impact at all on their (excellent) exam results.

lanthanum · 30/06/2025 23:15

Some schools will give permission for trainers for a limited period of time, if a parent asks. Alternatively, if you have any sort of secondhand system (we have a uniform swaps Facebook group) you could ask if there's a year 11 with a pair of the right size that they no longer need.

Oh shit I was also literally about to try No More Nails on daughter's school shoes. I do have super glue but last time I used it, nearly set self on fire 😂
