School shoes - end of term

Ds school shoes are knackered. The sole is flapping. I am loathe to buy new ones two weeks before school ends for the summer and suggested he wears his black trainers for the next two weeks. He said he will get put in isolation and would rather wear the flappy shoes.

Aibu to send him in these? Would anyone really buy new shoes at this point in the term?

Evostick is how my dad used to keep our shoes going at this point - I still remember the smell.

TBH, I remember just using gaffa tape right at the end of term once myself.. but schools weren't as strict with the uniform back then

My sons primary is state ofsted outstanding. His branded school bag fell apart 1 week before end of July Year 6. I sent him in with a normal backpack and they asked me to buy a new branded school bag.

Not all schools are created equal I guess. Ours is very realistic about this sort of thing.

Sounds like he’s secondary school age if it’s s mega strict uniform policy and isolation for not complying?? So how likely is it that if bought new shoes now he’d outgrow them by September? You could even go half a size up so long as they didn’t rub to allow a bit of growing room.

Some feet are incompatible with cheap shoes.

I would not be buying DS1 shoes at this point in the year as he's in rapid growth spurt mode, and the odds of wasting £60 on 2.5 weeks of wear are not favourable.

DS2 has cheaper feet and is growing more steadily so it would be worth the odds on replacing his shoes at this point. His feet can actually fit into and tolerate £25 shoes!

(Fortunately DS1 up-sized in May so we have at least got this term out of them if they don't fit in September)

Most schools tend to be sensible about understanding the costs/ growth rate by this point of the school year if you consult with them.

YWBVU to get your DS put in isolation, yes.

Presumably his feet won't grow so fast in six weeks, so they'll still fit in September.

I don't know of any decent school that would allow trainers.

My DC goes to one of the top private schools in the country. This close to the end of the school year, they would be happy with a child in trainers if they had a note from a parent explaining the situation.
And if you don't think a child's feet can grow a shoe size in six weeks, you're mistaken.
