School shoes - end of term

ipkissmyass · 30/06/2025 22:25

Ds school shoes are knackered. The sole is flapping. I am loathe to buy new ones two weeks before school ends for the summer and suggested he wears his black trainers for the next two weeks. He said he will get put in isolation and would rather wear the flappy shoes.

Aibu to send him in these? Would anyone really buy new shoes at this point in the term?

YWBVU to get your DS put in isolation, yes.

Presumably his feet won't grow so fast in six weeks, so they'll still fit in September.

I don't know of any decent school that would allow trainers.

My children’s school is Ofsted Outstanding and would allow trainers at this point of the term. They definitely wouldn’t expect parents to fork out for new shoes with 2 weeks of the term to go.

Martymcfly24 · 30/06/2025 23:20

The school are being very unreasonable in this instance.
We finished up last week but for the last six weeks of school children wear white polo ( part of normal school tracksuit) black shorts and any runners they want every day . Much easier than skirts and pants that have gone too short and shoes with holes.

OneGiddyRubyViewer · 30/06/2025 23:22

No, don’t send him in black trainers. Why can’t you buy them now? If it’s because his feet will grow that quickly then just get him a cheapo pair out primark or shoezone for now. Don’t send him in with flapping soles, this happened to me, the flap made me fall down the stairs and I got really hurt. Not to mention people laughed at me about the state of the shoes.

Edited to say the school are being unreasonable but unfortunately if you send him there you have to follow their rules.

As a teacher, I wouldn't want a parent to buy new shoes at this point in the year. By the time you get to September, the child's feet may have grown so much they won't get anywhere out of a pair of new shoes. Send a note to the teacher of explaining this.

Not many teachers as as reasonable as you unfortunately

Scottish schools allow trainers and a lax uniform. I find it’s the English schools that are very strict about it. I’ve been to both.

noblegiraffe · 30/06/2025 23:29

Just ask the school if he can wear trainers. My school would allow it. No point in forking out for new shoes without checking first.

ChocolateEmergency · 30/06/2025 23:30

I most definitely wouldn’t be buying new school shoes now, but my 7 year old did has size 5 feet and I’m forever buying her new shoes!

Last year she needed new shoes just before the end of term. I popped to a cheap shoe shop to get her through the last couple of weeks and the patent ripped off within a couple of days. She looked worse walking round like that than she would have looked in a smart pair of trainers.

Email the school, they’ll understand.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 30/06/2025 23:37

Possibly it’s not a decent school but the local high school allows trainers so long as all black. They’ve been known to hand out sharpies.

I think once sole has started flapping it’s all over. I have tried a temporary fix of very strong double sided rug tape to hold on then superglue round the edge too seal. I thought I’d cracked it but lasted less than a day.

the product you want is called Shoe Goo

I had this issue just before the 6 week holidays when DD was in year 5. She’s autistic so insisted on wearing heelys to go into school then would change into her school shoes as soon as she went into her classroom. This went on for months. She’d change back into her heelys before coming out at pick up. Anything she’d received from school she would hand to me from out of her bag when we got home so I never checked her bag. One day on a Friday afternoon pick up I had a random woman from school (turned out to be the TA) approach me and literally tell me that I WILL buy her new school shoes before school on Monday very loudly. I was confused and said “What do you mean?” She repeated what she’d said and walked away. I looked in DD’s school bag when we got home and saw that her school shoes had one sole completely flapping. DD hadn’t said a word to me about them. I was fucking mortified. I never saw that woman again after but did indeed get her new school shoes that weekend. I still think she was a complete bitch with how she approached me out of the blue.
Since then (DD is now in year 8) I have used gorilla glue to patch up shoes when they’re still fairly new but have had gaps open up. Unsurprisingly, I don’t have the budget to buy new whenever there’s a slight problem but save to make sure she never gets to flappy shoe territory ever again after that public shaming.

Send him with a note or email in. We’ve got a good few in the same position.

ive been to 5 high schools and all the ones in England were strict about no trainers even black ones

OneGiddyRubyViewer · 30/06/2025 23:45

I wouldn’t be wasting money on glue for shoes. Such a faff and doesn’t always work. Id just buy something like this to keep him going until he grows out of them. You’d be able to sell them on vinted after for a few quid if they’re still in good nick after 2 weeks and get some of the money back. shoes

IKnowASecret · 30/06/2025 23:48

Unless you suspected a massive growth spurt I'd get the new ones now. More choices than once the holidays start and a couple of weeks to wear them in to get a head start on next term. Don't be a martyr to the foot gauges, just size up for wiggle room.

Poonu · 01/07/2025 00:30

OP unless you cannot afford them you should 100% get him proper footwear.

AnonMJ · 01/07/2025 00:35

Last year we gaffa taped and super glued shoes to get them to the end of the term.
I think in the last week he wore black trainers.

given how fast his feet grow I would not buy shoes now for September.
(this is the child that grew 10cm in height in the last year!)

OneGiddyRubyViewer · 01/07/2025 00:41

Just to say if you genuinely can’t afford them, schools normally have a fund for this. Would be worth asking if you don’t have the money for two pairs should he have a growth spurt

OneGiddyRubyViewer · 01/07/2025 00:42

Or they may have some of the same size in lost property

Sadmummy3 · 01/07/2025 00:51

DDs old school were pretty strict on uniform but they would allow black trainers near the end of term or in an emergency (eg school shoes breaking in the morning)
Why not give school a call and ask HoY? Or better still email them so DS can prove he has permission.
I'd be worried about him tripping over and ir the school are that strict surely he'd get isolation for his shoes anyway.
Email them, if they say no get him some cheap ones.

FutureCatMum · 01/07/2025 08:40

I think you’re just going to have to bite the bullet and buy some cheap new shoes. I had to at the weekend for my DD which was really annoying with 3 weeks left. But hers were rubbing and making her feet sore in the heat. She wore black trainers on Friday and immediately got a detention.
My DS could grow up to 1.5 sizes over the summer so I do feel your pain about the waste of money but you have little choice. If your DS is like mine, playing more football will ruin a repair anyway.

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 01/07/2025 08:43

Have you emailed the school and asked about trainers? Both my dc's schools chilled out about shoes at the end of each school year.

Unfair - teachers have to follow school policy.

My sons primary is state ofsted outstanding. His branded school bag fell apart 1 week before end of July Year 6. I sent him in with a normal backpack and they asked me to buy a new branded school bag.
