herbalteabag · 30/06/2025 14:37

No, that's really high. I have myself and one child and pay £101 and my house is draughty!

Saponaria · 30/06/2025 14:46

I pay £45 combined gas and electricity for one person in a 2 bed flat. Octopus

Bjorkdidit · 30/06/2025 14:47

Ours is about £110 pm for a direct debit that is about right for what we use.

£300 pm sounds high but how big is your house, what sort of heating and hot water do you have and what's the gas/electric split? Do you have a water tank?

Is that your direct debit amount or 'a bill'? Is it right for what you use? Are you paying off debt or are you in a lot of credit? On its own £300 pm might not tell you much so you need to look into it further.

If you live in a flat could you also be paying for a neighbour?

shellyleppard · 30/06/2025 14:48

@TheOpalFox do you have arrears from a previous supplier?? Your bills seem very high. Can you ask for a smart meter/detailed breakdown of the bills?? I'm paying £120 for a two bed semi detached House. No tumble dryer. With octopus

Beamur · 30/06/2025 14:48

Mine is about £250-300 a month. 4 bed house. 2 people WFH. Electric car. Heavy use of washing machine/dishwasher.
It's expensive.

MemorableTrenchcoat · 30/06/2025 14:49

It could be that high, it depends what you're doing, and what tariff you're on, amongst other things. How many kWh of each are you using per month?

greencartbluecart · 30/06/2025 14:49

It’s high but you need to give more deatail

yiur bill will say how many kWh of electric and how many of gas - this would be useful to share

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 30/06/2025 14:50

Live alone, no dishwasher or tumble drier, only hot water tank used occasionally, logburner so heating rarely on, electric only. Around £60-70 per month actual usage.

GasPanic · 30/06/2025 14:51

I mean prices have been high for ages. What has made you suddenly notice ?

Mikart · 30/06/2025 14:53

My bill was £74 this month.

mindutopia · 30/06/2025 14:53

That’s quite high. We don’t have gas, but our electricity is currently £156 a month. 5 bed house with 4 of us, tumble dryer that I use for something almost daily, dishwasher, etc. We do have solar panels that are used to heat our water during the day, but I’m not sure really how efficient they are because they’re ancient.

Myotherusernamesafunnyone · 30/06/2025 14:53

Ours is £300. 5 bed house (built in 1650). 3 kids, 2 adults; tumble dryer, washing machine and dishwasher never off!

Greengrass29 · 30/06/2025 15:04

Never understand threads like this

if you are paying £300pm and its right for your usage youve got something eating usage somewhere and you need to find it not post on mumsnet....

mickandrorty · 30/06/2025 15:08

£240 and I do between 2-6 loads of washing a day and dry using tumble dryer

MemorableTrenchcoat · 30/06/2025 15:11

The trouble is, people don't know how to find out whether it's right for their usage and, assuming they don't have poor numeracy, can't be bothered to learn. I doubt OP will be back with any useful information.

Ariela · 30/06/2025 15:20

No. 4 bed house £90 electric (which actually is winter payments but we're back into the cycle of 'we must have a quarter's bills up front before we let you drop the Direct Debit even though we know every summer you ridiculously overpay', we have solar and last monthly bill was £45 till we have banked £00 with them THEN we might be allowed to pay less), and we have oil for heating cooking hot water but not used since March and won't till late September, spending £5-600/year so £50/month. But is a small house, modest sized rooms not flashy, and I only use dishwasher and tumble dryer when the sun shines, washing machine mostly when the sun shines.

AnneElliott · 30/06/2025 15:23

We pay £250 per month but there are 4 of us and it’s a 5 bed house. Yours does sound high. Is this a recent thing?

Nourishinghandcream · 30/06/2025 15:32

More detail needed as £300/m means nothing on its own.
DD or actual readings, are you in arrears, any significant details that have been omitted?

Our bills are based on actual meter readings so there is no guesswork involved.
4-Bed det, home all day, dishwasher etc (but practically no tumble use in this recent weather!😆) and we pay a DD of £80/m, in credit to the tune of about £500 and this month's actual bill for G&E being £62 total.

Thank you! 😅

Was wondering why everyone’s so confidently saying it’s too high or offering up their own costs when OP has not included any details re how large her property is, type of boiler (old/new or floor standing like mine so more expensive) as well as a plethora of other details making it impossible to pass opinion really.

Agree, this is quite a serious concern and @TheOpalFox youre better off having a word with your supplier in case there’s any issues with billing or you’re unknowingly overly using an appliance under the misapprehension it’s low cost. Last thing you want is to accrue wrong charges and it’ll be easier to work through the sooner you address it!

Allthings · 30/06/2025 15:47

That’s twice the amount that a typical dual fuel customer would use (2/3 people in a 2/3 bedroomed house). You have not supplied enough information to comment any further.

Hatty65 · 30/06/2025 16:06

Yes. Mine is £340 a month. 2 adults in a draughty Victorian house.

RepoTheGeriatricOpera · 30/06/2025 16:09

I have a 5 bed house, me and 5 dc, endless washing and drying, and a dishwasher and I probably around the £150 mark atm, in winter it will be between £200 and £250.

CatsorDogsrule · 30/06/2025 16:14

£350, but a 5 bed house, family of 5. We have solar panels too, so dread to think what we'd pay without them. Yours sounds incredibly high, but without more details it's difficult to say.

Check for faulty heating and cooling appliances - freezer with a poor seal, immersion heater left on or with a faulty thermostat, etc.

gigthenfishdelish · 30/06/2025 16:55

£240 on a dd
Draughty Victorian house
3 adults 2 of which wfh
Dishwasher and washing machine on too much

gamerchick · 30/06/2025 16:57

I pay 167 a month for gas and electric. 4 bed house. I don't understand why you're paying that much. Do you have arrears?
